Children learn certain behaviors are inappropriate (and hilarious) by watching Bertie's everyday life... filled with filthy habits like licking the dog's face and eating candy off the ground (who hasn't known a kid like that -- or done it ourselves??). I don't think (as some parents have suggested) that this book will lead to deviant behavior, but rather that it is a fun way for both parent and child to examine what not to do. Moreover, it's funny and engaging for kids! KIDS LOVE GROSS (and this book gets a ten on the gross-o-meter) even if stuffy parents don't. You never know when a book like this will be the 'gateway drug' to books of greater breadth for a young reader.
