PYXX said: Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly A genuinely childlike spirit pervades this tale, which may be taken as myth or metaphor. Long ago children clambered through a tangled hill: among them were Animal Growlers (who could make sort of ferocious noises) and Moonlight Prowlers (who didn't seem to need much sleep at night). The most special child was Pyxx, who could sit on clouds. But then two adults come to the tangled hill, build a house and hang a sign that says they would like to tame children. The children, persuaded by promises of good food, warm beds and loving surroundings, surrender their wild ways--all but Pyxx, who remains in the clouds making sure that no child ever becomes too tame. Never sentimental, the story has a pleasant, rolling rhythm that adds to its fable-like qualities. Is it a story about the imaginative world of children, and their return to a concrete universe with their parents, or is it meant to be a new fairy tale? It doesn't matter. Striking illustrations, energetic and eerie, depict the action in a story of a time when children and animals lived as one in the wild. Ages 4-7. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Student #18 Pyxx Pyxx is a story written and illustrated by Robert Wahl. Pyxx is a very exciting book that will capture anyoneís attention. I absolutely like the way the author wrote this book because he made it sound interesting in the story. It has so many details describing Pyxx. I also like the bold and beautiful way the illustrations were done. The setting is in the forest and in a man and womenís house next to the forest. In this forest of Tangled Hill, the children are without parents, bedtime, and homework of chores. The children see the man and woman with food and clothes and go live with them except Pyxx. Pyxx is a magical jungle boy who sits on clouds. He likes to ride on any kind of cloud. It is his favorite hobby to do every day. The forest is a place with lots of trees and animals. The womanís house is warm and cozy with lots of clothes. The huge picture is when all the jungle boys leave their forest homes and animals just to live with the woman. The little picture is Pyxx as a very kind and loving person. Pyxx lives in the forest called Tangled Hill, with friends. He rides clouds as a personal hobby. His friends do whatever they want to do, all day long. They play with animals such as tigers, crocodile, and etc. Then a man and woman come and put up a sign that says, ìWanted kids for taming.î Then she builds a house out of forest trees. Pyxx and his friends peek into the house. The woman invites them in, and gives them food and clothes. The women tells them that they may stay and live with with her only if they donít bring the animals with them. So they let the animals all go away. The women adopted them with joy. She reads them stories and gives them cozy beds in which they sleep at night. Very soon, they will start school. However, the children are leaving the animals behind. Pyxx misses the old days of how Tangled Hill used to be. I would recommend Pyxx to anybody who enjoys books with unique characters, like Pyxx. Pyxx is a cloud flyer. He loves animals, and he likes the wild nature. He did not choose to stay with the woman and be tamed. It is such a special book. I havenít read any that are similar. I hope you have a great time reading this fantastic book.
