I think it was because the premise was so sad: a girl, her younger brother and mom living in a car because they can't afford an apartment. But the book turned out to have a few surprises, and I ended up enjoying it more than I expected. I think the author does a good job of staying inside a kid's viewpoint, though I'm not sure just hold the narrator is.
