Mexcaltitan Following a Dream An Image Show from Mexico 2010 by Della Burford.
It all started with a dream in Canada signaling a connection to a Spirit Animal with thunder. I really started to understand the Dream in Mexico by the ocean. Dreamt in Mexico of another symbol- a Spiral- in which I was told in Huichol symbology represented the Aramara. Someone who had been working with the Huichol for thirty years told me the meaning of different symbols such as the Eagle, Spiral, Jaguar, Deer, and Corn. Went further north to a small Mexican village and we went out to search for ancient spiral stones with author Alex Kerekes and his friend Rick. I painted a Spirit Animal paintings under the palms. It was great to get together with friends for fiestas. Knew I must go to Mexcaltitan but no one else was able or wanted to go. Went by local bus by myself and as synchronicity played its part met, in San Blas in the Plaza near where the bus stopped, a woman who was admiring the Huichole art who asked me why I was there and when I told her she said would take me the next day.
I had been there twelve years previous and painted a map of the island which to me is like a mandala but only a mile wide and suppose to be the mythical land of Aztlan- the place of herons- around this area which is a mangrove swamp there is suppose to be many species of birds, turtles, crustaceans, and on the way deer. I felt luck to be able to get a beaded jaguar head enroute from a Huichole woman.
Though the people on the isla seem very humble and live in adobe huts Mexicaltitan has an extraordinary past connected to the ancestral history of the story of the people searching for an eagle with a snake in its mouth on a cactus the people from this island were suppose from a vision voyaged to the Mexico City area and built Tenochtitlan. In Dale Bertrand book Druidical Quest he mentions this story as the writer of the Druid manuscripts John Hugh Roberts interestingly has references to Azatlan. I shared on the island the pictures from my latest picture book Miracle Galaxy the Star Island is inspired by Mexcaltitan in which I hold in my story a Creativity Celebration and so is the place of birth of my Gratitude Angel which is really what I felt - really thankful - to be able to have an opportunity to go to this part of the world again. Please enjoy the few photos taken.
