The descriptions of the horrible Herdman kids are perfect, the narrator's way of talking very natural, and her friend Alice's comments good contrast. The book would be worth reading for the humor alone, but it actually makes a point, too. It sounds like the author spent years rewriting and revising until every word was perfect.
