I LOVE this page Andrea. And the central question reminds me of a time a couple of years back when I had my students make zines and display them in the hall. My colleague Patrick overheard someone walk by and say 'what's a zine?' But rather than pronouncing 'zine' to sound like magazine, they pronounced it to rhyme with spine.

Ok, after this long comment, I'm realizing I probably am making no sense at all.

Ooooh I love those late night pen rants, the ones where you're actually just asleep but with your eyes open and then you wake up the next day, find your sketchbook, and end up asking yourself wtf does this even mean OR did I write/draw this.... I don't recall?! And the crazy thing was you were most definitely sober. Ah, I know it well. I think I might come up with an alter ego to take responsibility for all those incidences... Ha ha ha

They both are beautiful. I agree with rhomany, the dynamism of the water is better in the original, but the colour of the water is more vibrant in the second one. I would actually exhibit them side-by-side.

You know enough! You know you liked doing the first because it was the first even if there were things you didn't like about it such as the size and you know you like this one even if it lacks the fun of a new subject. I like both of them. I am just continually amazed at what you can draw.

It's definitely helpful to click on the image to see the full size version and read the captions. I think your stairs look fine. Perhaps not quite steep enough, but it's hard to say from that perspective. Still much better than I could do.

Oooh, I can't wait to get the new zine! It looks absolutely fantastic! And it's so much easier turning around a little zine to read all the text (compared to twisting your head in front of the screen :D ), hehe.

As for the pens: I couldn't agree more. I got a really expensive ballpoint from a friend (and I truly love it for it's beautiful shade of blue), but my favorite (at the moment) is still that ugly free merchandise thing (I think I got it from Epcos or Tecon... maybe?)... I wish it won't ever run dry!

I love the Garni. Gorgeous drawing, great layout. Hard to believe its pen...it almost has a coloured pencil appearance to it.

I think the anenomes are beautifully drawn, but I think they lose something in the layout. Perhaps they might shine a bit more if there were fewer on the page...perhaps they compete too much with each other just now?

Just my little opinion. As always, your work it brilliant and I have no room to talk...:\

Ah, that makes me feel better, that you can't be perfect all the time! Love the bouquet garni, shame about the anemones but sometimes that's the way it goes. Perhaps drawing so many was what gave you the difficulty although I can totally see why you chose the composition.

Maybe it was just a moment without the "go" for it.

The bouquet garnis are thoughtfully drawn indeed - I always like the prosaic objects in life made beautiful when seen through another's eyes. You have been a bit hard on yourself with the sea urchin shells but as you say, your heart was not in it, so there I guess there is not so much detailed lined-work. - Wait a minute, that last line but one is pretty nice

Dawn, they are little bundles of herbs to put use in stews and casseroles and stuff. In this country they come in, what can only be described as, teabags. I, of course have never used them in cooking. I just like to look at them.

My boat is well and truly afloat, love the bouquet garni drawings. Great textures and colours, I can see why you were drawn to them...

I love it that you'll post sketches you aren't personally in love with; it's difficult for any artist to do that, turn off the "self editor", that sort of thing. Furthermore, when I first looked at the page, it was the urchin/anemone/sea creatures that drew me in -- funny how that works. Made me want to go tidepooling.

You amaze, you startle, you draw me deeper into the quietest part of my heart—which I used to inhabit when I drew.

Hard to be bored with these, Andrea! Just do a variety of things, then you never get bored!

The one problem with ballpoint, that I've heard of, is that they are not colourfast, so could fade away, especially when exposed to sunlight.

I love your work - doodling is one of my favourite types of art, although I seem to have a hard time drawing the drawings out of my imagination. Your work gives me hope! :) Love it, keep doodling!

The first time I saw your sketches, I was totally inspired to start sketching with ballpoint pen. However, when i tried it, it turns out bad and very messy. I really would like to see how you actually do it, may be you can post some videos of you sketching? or some tutorials? I really would like to learn from you because you are so great haha...keep it up!

Simply beautiful! I've always loved Adidas classic range of shoes, but I love this drawing more. The details are great and I really like the way you did the outline as well.

Beautifully done! I find that when I put away my drawings that I am unhappy with, when I go back to them in a few weeks, I often like them a lot better or I can immediately see what the problem is and can fix it. Sometimes the problem is that they turn out differently than what I expected but I need some distance to evaluate them objectively.

This is great! If this is what you consider the best of a "bad" bunch, then your best of the best would be mindblowing!!!!

I have just stumbled across your blog. It's lovely! Your drawings are so good - I've never tried drawing with a ballpoint pen before, perhaps I should! Sometimes the simplest things around the house make ideal subjects. My most recent being a pair of rubber gloves and a Tea-Towel!

An A3 scanner is not always the answer - my scanne does such tragic things to my guache paintings that I find they come out with better colours if I just photograph them. If you want to show us detail - take macro shots - then we can even see the line of your textures ...

my experience with scanners
(those that cost hundreds, not thousands)
is that they don't do a good job capturing subtlety.
The more i look around at artist's blogging, photos actually do a better job than scanners do.

The trompe l'oeil works well, even with photos! The pens seem completely tridimensional. It's an amazing drawing!

Andrea, do you want to know how well your trompe l'oeil came across? I've been looking at the picture for days now, without reading the comments.

I've been trying to figure out what the trompe l'oeil was. (was it the red part of the pic? the red "line" down the middle? I can be a bit naive, But I really wasn't seeing it!) It was only after reading the comments that I saw it was the pens. They look THAT real. So honestly, I think you did an awesome job.

Great drawing, so glad I looked closer to read the text too! Feel the same way about running - I much prefer to walk fast myself - you get to wear the same trainers, have the exercise and don't (usually) get so out of breath and shouldn't get so sweaty - unless you live in Malaysia, like me!

That is precisely the amount of time Edgar can leave them as well... I, on the other hand, get very nauseous when I wake up to dirty dishes. Therefore, I force myself to try to wash them the night before. Yuck...

no offence intended andrea. but sorry, your dish stacking skills suck. you can leave the dishes at least 3 more days. BUT when stacking you need to put the cups outside the dish rack, then you can get more stuff in the rack. i sometimes, depending on dish amount might go so far as to lay out a teatowel. then you can really go crazy.

When I was a student, I didn't do the dishes for a whole week, I did them on friday afternoon and then had work for hours :-)

One time Peceli and I returned from Fiji after leaving three teenage sons to fend for themselves. We came home a day early and oh, they thought they had another day to clean up. Mugs all over the house. I cleaned up (they were still at school) and missed seeing Queen Elizabeth who was in town!

I hate leaving dishes in the rack overnight. I like to start the morning fresh or it's too hard to face at all! Great picture. I think the pictures shown on Penguin and Fish were nice examples. It feels good to be recognized for your work doesn't it?

Wow, that is really good, I'd have a go at drawing the washing up but I never have a chance because the pots are always done! Anyhow, your drawings and sketches never fail to make me happy ;-)
