1. Indiana Jones On Scrap Paper

A morning warm up sketch of one of my favorite movie heroes Henry "Junior" "Indiana" Jones. Drawn with brush and ink and watercolour and something that kind of feels like a page from a Moleskine notebook.

2. The Case Of The Unexpected Week!

So, with Julie and Henry away my plan was to work up some new portfolio pieces and get caught up on some projects, but publishing is one unexpected thing after another and I ended up doing some sample illustrations for a new client.

The above drawing is unrelated, just a sketchbook sketch. I'm actually pretty happy with it and am going to explore this look a bit more.

7. Pumpkin Pencil Comic

Pencils for a Halloween comic I'm trying to get done. Yesterday I suddenly found myself with two tight deadlines so I'm really hoping to get this done. It's only 8 pages and the pencils are finished but it still needs inking. I plan to ink it in brush with indigo ink.

8. Brush Lines

I've really been loving working with good quality inks and brushes lately. So much so I'm going to try and do a short Halloween comic story using them.

9. Atha In Technicolor

A sketch I did of Atha. Not a lot to say this morning. We're feeding Henry and it's really windy and wet out. I'm off to play RPGs this afternoon. Plan to check out comic shop called The Hairy Tarantula. That's it.

13. Elizabeth Cotten

Here's a picture I did in my Moleskine sketchbook of one of my favorite singer songwriters, Elizabeth Cotten. She has a wonderful sensitive and lively way of playing. She's most famous for her song Freight Train.

14. Forty Great Things

Well, it's my fortieth birthday today, so I had to make a piece about that. I also took it as an opportunity for a huge studio clean out and art sale with a crazy 40% off for 40 hours. Originals, prints, etc. This also ended up being an homage to Star Trek (Khaaaaaaaan!!!!) since I am very excited to see that movie this weekend!

17. Rocket Raccoon: Covered!

My "cover" of the classic Mike Mignola cover to the 1985 comic book Rocket Raccoon was accepted to Robert Goodin's amazing blog Covered. The top is the finished ink, gouache and photoshop piece and the bottom is just my inks. This comic had a huge impact on me as a kid. After years of reading what I would later learn were just Jack Kirby knock offs when I read this I thought"this is how they should make comics!"

21. 20th Century Playlist (Sibelius)

While waiting for go ahead on some projects I'm drawing all sorts of stuff that pops into my head. This is a drawing I did of Jean Sibelius, one of my favorite composers. 25. Toth

"Simplicity is a great god. Truth. Throw out all the junk. There's a saying which says: "to add to truth subtracts from it." Make it so simple you can't cheat ,"
Alex Toth
P.S. I think it's a bit ironic that I'm quoting Mr. Toth. He's one of my favorite cartoonists but I do have a tendency to lavish a lot of detail in my work. My teachers in art school always tried to tell me that a drawing isn't necessarily better just because I spent a long time on it. Sometimes I would ruin a drawing by overdoing it. I always recall this quote as a way of ensuring I don't ruin a drawing.
