My ambition is to revolutionize the reading skills of children and make books and reading a world of fun for them. Inter-active book performances, filled with rhythm, rhyme, hand-clapping, toe-tapping, body-shaking and music-making, are a favorite tool for reaching this goal. I am the author of 12 books, an education consultant, and founder of Unchained Spirit Enterprises. Unchained Spirit publishes motivational and educational books and hosts readings and seminars for teachers, librarians, parents, children, and the general public. My books for adults include 11 R’s Every Teacher Should Know Training Manual and Reading Remedies Every Parent Should Know. My most recent children’s book, Barack Obama: A Hip-Hop Tale of King’s Dream Come True is a satirized rendering of the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. The brightly colored 32-page book pulsates with swift-moving rhymes and drama, while educating youngsters about one of the most important events in American and world history. Ultimately it reveals President Obama’s strong connection to the enduring legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. My other children’s picture books include, Kara Finds Sunshine on a Rainy Day, The Jelani Tree, Kara and Friends Meet Abraham Lincoln, Collard Greens and Yams, and Head Start: Our Kind of Place. Prior to writing books, I was a journalist and served on two Pulitzer Prize juries. My work was nominated for The Pulitzer Prize and entered into the Congressional Record. I live in Washington, D.C.
