Are E-books in Style in Children's Books? For a while, e-books were all the rage. Parents bought kindles and readers for their children for Christmas and birthdays. I was one of those parents. As teenagers, my boys, using the kindle or any reader was short-lived. But now, they have picked it up again and are reading e-books more than heavy books that they would have to carry. My guys are adults now so they are reading mostly adult books as e-books. But do kids read e-books? I did some research. The local librarian in my hometown says that e-books are on their way in again. Go to any library website and you will find a list of e-books for children. Kids are on-line more these days than they ever were so don't be surprised if they want to read a book on their kindle. I have a book on kindle that is a chapter book for children ages 7-10. I was surprised to find it listed in so many different countries! In the U.S.A. Cool! http://www.amazon.com/Scooter-Club-Lily-Erlic-ebook/dp/B00P31LBYK In Spain? Yes! http://www.amazon.es/Scooter-Club-English-Edition-Erlic-ebook/dp/B00P31LBYK Australia? Nice. http://www.amazon.com.au/Scooter-Club-Lily-Erlic-ebook/dp/B00P31LBYK Canada! http://www.amazon.ca/Scooter-Club-Lily-Erlic-ebook/dp/B00P31LBYK In England-Hurray! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scooter-Club-Lily-Erlic-ebook/dp/B00P31LBYK I do think e-books are coming back in style. There is plenty of evidence on Amazon Kindle and many other platforms out there! How do you get your e-book into the library system if you are a children's author? That question remains for me to do more research.

Getting Started: How to Become a Published Author step 1: Read the books that are similar to the ones you would like to write. Step 2: Make friends with your local librarian. She will help you with all your questions and give you guidance as to what books to read. She will suggest books too. Step 3: Join a local children's author group if it's available. Stay tuned for more.

Butterfly Girls by Beryl Reichenberg "How does a Monarch Butterfly teach two young girls how to fly?" Well, if you want to find out, I suggest reading Beryl's picture book published by Oak Tree Press. Here's an excerpt: One morning Ashley went into the yard, and to her suprise, there was a bright, orange and black butterfly, flapping its wings. "Little butterfly, when did you come out of your chrysalis?" This lovely book tells a story of two girls discovering the beauty and magic of the butterflies. I recommend this book for children ages 3 and up. Here's a link to Beryl's website where you can find more information: www.berylreichenberg.com

8. Top That! Book Reviews

Two books arrived in my mail by Top That! Publishing house. The first one is called Timmy The Tiger Finds First Words. The book is within a series called Learn With Magnets. Here is an excerpt of the first page spread: Timmy the Tiger has lost his cub. He sets off into the jungle to look for him. On the first page, there is a word spelled, c u b. Each letter is housed in a square. There are magnetic letters attached to the book which are magnets. The child may be asked to place the corresponding magnetic letters on each square. The next page the word is l o o k. The magnets adhere to the book! This is a clever way to teach children letters and words! Other words in the book are pond, frog, hug, fox and more. I enjoyed reading this book. I recommend this book to children learning to read, ages 3 and up.

10. Review of The Great Garage Sale

Here's an excerpt from The Great Garage Sale written by Marilyn Helmer and Illustrated by Mike Deas: "You're pulling out flowers, not weeds." His mouth curved into a lopsided grin. "Don't you know the difference between a weed and a flower?" "Of course I do," said DJ. Who was this smart-alecky kid anyway? "Weeds don't have flowers on them." The kid rolled his eyes. "See those buds? You're pulling out plants before they're big enough to bloom." This is a description of just one of DJ's mishaps that he has throughout this entertaining chapter book! He sells a jewelery box at a garage sale that wasn't meant for selling. He gives up his skateboard, Speedwell, to get the jewelery box back. He has good intentions but things seem to go awry for him. Somehow things turn around and the Superstacker (his favorite kind of deluxe sandwich) always seems to smooth things out for him. This Orca Echoes chapter book is written with pizzaz and flair which is sure to entertain young readers! Published by Orca Book Publishers.

I just received the pdf's of two new books from Dawn Publications in my inbox. I am looking forward to reviewing them. Here's an excerpt below from the e-mail they sent me.

What’s in the Garden?

by Marianne Berkes

Illustrated by Cris Arbo
Good food doesn’t begin on a store shelf with a box. It comes from a garden bursting with life, color, sounds, smells, sunshine, moisture, birds, and bees! Healthy food becomes much more interesting when children know where they come from. So what’s in the garden? Kids will find a variety fruits and vegetables, and a tasty, kid-friendly recipe for each one to start a lifetime of good eating. A "food for thought" section presents interesting facts about each fruit and vegetable, and a "how does your garden grow?" section explains facts about gardening and the parts of plants.

Noisy Bug Sing-Along

In this book the reader is treated to scientifically accurate, up-close depictions of some very cool bugs. It explains why the bugs make the sounds they do, and how they do it—and it’s not with their voices! Plus the author offers several intriguing "bug games."

14. Scholastic Teacher's Essentials Catalogue- google your book

If you have a book published, find out where the publisher is selling it by googling your book.

Travelling through cyberspace, I came across this website that had my published book in it. I had to dig though. I mean I wasn't aware at all that the book, Finger Rhymes for the Holidays was in the Scholastic Essentials catalogue. It was under the heading Teachers.

http://www.scholastic.ca/clubs/cec/images/1213/CEC_12-13_04.pdf

I went to Scholastic.com where I discovered a short bio of myself but no books of mine were included on the website. On scholastic.ca, in a pdf, and under the heading Teacher's Essentials. It was a long search but worth it.

19. Nature's Patchwork Quilt Mini Review

A new book from Dawn Publications, this book exemplifies the wonders of nature. It explores habitats of the world. The illustrations are detailed and varied, full of life! I recommend this book to children who want to study about creatures and where they live. Here's an excerpt:
                                                  A patchwork quilt

                                                  has many pieces that
                                                  fit together to make
                                                  a beautiful blanket.

Nature is like a patchwork quilt.
                                                  It has many different habitats
                                                  all pieced together to create
                                                  our wonderful planet.

21. More Pictures from the Conference in New York

Lin Oliver, the president and founder of SCBWI, signs a copy of my book Hank Zipzer by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver. The book was a great read and Lin was even greater. She is an adorable woman. I told her so in person. I hope I see her again in Los Angeles.

Another highlight was when Jane Yolen signed my book Pretty Princess Pig and How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? Heidi E. Y. Stemple signed the first book which she authored with Jane.

More highlights to come...

22. SCBWI Winter Conference in New York

I met a wonderful illustrator named Debbie Ohi. She showed me the galley of her new book, 'I'm Bored'.
I met two excellent editors, Cheryl Klein and Samantha McFerrin.
Here's Cheryl again. She was signing copies of her new book Second Sight.
http://cherylklein.com/buying-second-sight/

Lin Oliver, the President of SCBWI and the author of a series of books, is a sweet and adorable person!
She signed a copy of the book that I purchased called HANK ZIPZER, Dump Trucks and Dogsleds: I'm on my Way, Mom! Henry Wrinkler is also the author of this book!

The Access Copyright Foundation supported me to go to the SCBWI winter conference in New York. The foundation, http://www.acfoundation.ca/, was instrumental in my goal to develop as a children's author. I applied for the Professional Development grant that allowed me to go to New York to this informative conference to network and learn from a respected panel of editors, publishers and agents. I met authors and illustrators as well. It was an inspiring time which I will cherish forever. I will also implement everything I have learned.

I'm excited to tell you about a book which I co-authored called Howie's Adventures, 'Get Ready, Get Set, Race!' Howie, a young mechanic, finds a tear in the timing belt. The speedster wouldn't work without the timing belt. Howie has discovered an important flaw. Howie, with his pit crew is getting ready for the big race. Who will win the race? Will the Speedster No. 75  have a chance?

25. Gobble, Gobble

Gobble Gobble is a picture book written and illustrated by Cathryn Falwell. This book has colorful illustrations and informative (for the young), rhyming text about turkeys. Here's an excerpt:
                                           Turkeys! A flock of birds,
                                            with big strong feet.
                                            Turkeys look for seeds
                                            to eat.
For older children, there is 'Jenny's Journal' page at the end of the book. She talks about turkeys more in depth and provides turkey crafts. I really liked the book. I give it four out of five books!
