1. WonderCon and new sizes of (certain) prints…

New size print shown by booth babe Shawn
New size print shown by booth babe Shawn

After a road trip to the wildly successful Silicon Valley Comic Con, it is good to have a local con (even if it means putting up with the dreaded downtown LA traffic) this weekend. So WonderCon has moved for this year from Anaheim, which is in the middle of some heavy renovations and expansions, to downtown Los Angeles. Some will say this is good, others will say it is bad; nonetheless we shall be there ready to go on Friday.

Our booth will be set up in artist alley this year at D-16. We will being trying to cram our ever expanding wares upon a single table, which we may expand to two tables for next year. One of the new items will be 13″x 19″ sizes of some of our more popular prints due to growing interest in the larger sizes. These are printed on high quality paper and will sell for $30 apiece or 3 for $70. Due to limited space we will only have a limited amount of prints in that size available.

More to come next week as we will have a small break before we head up to Seattle for Emerald City Comicon.

2. Going to see that wizard called Woz…

Silicon Valley Comic Con LogoWe are heading into our first official comic convention of 2016, the inaugural Silicon Valley Comic Con up in San Jose. This is an interesting show as it is taking over the Big Wow comic con show and combining it with technology floor show area. So what does that mean? Hell if I know, but it will be interesting no matter what.

grimlady
The Grim Lady

My only real gripe may be about the table placement, as we will be facing the autograph section. This means a lot of heads will be turned towards the celebs trying to snap a quick pic and it is what it is (just means we got to make our display really stand out). So come check us out over at AA1 U, we have some great new products (like the Grim Lady), some of which are not up on our online store yet.

Plus the Woz may show everyone his kick ass watch

3. Con season begins once again…

Lots to do, lots to do… and so little time. You would think we would be old pros at this now, but damn if the butterflies don’t start a fluttering around this time. Paying for shows, flights, hotel rooms, airbnbs… and a whole slew of other things that will cause a bit of anxiety. But it is worth it as we love traveling and seeing everyone at the shows, which will start off Saturday with a one day horror show.

spookshow_promoThe 4th Annual Spook Show at the Halloween Club in La Mirada is here on March 5th and it will be our third time doing it. It keeps getting better and better each year; artist, crafters, vendors, food trucks, music, and much more. One of our favorite small shows, plus it is a great way to start off the con season. The show is free, but you must RSVP your free tickets to gain admittance. It is from noon til 7 on Saturday and family friendly.

There are plenty of more shows in the coming weeks, so everyone have fun and we hope to see you soon.

4. A Night at Arlyn Pillay’s Gallery

arlyn Pillay GalleryWe have been meaning to visit Arlyn’s gallery for some time now and I am glad we finally did. I have met Arlyn at a tattoo convention about 3 years ago and have seen him at various west coast comic conventions since than. He has always talked about how he wanted to open up his own gallery in Tustin, CA. I’m so happy he finally did. The place is amazing, filled with his own beautiful paintings and drawings as well as other emerging local artists. Not only does he showcase art, but he also hosts live music, figure drawing workshops and offers art lessons to both children and adults.

Arlyn’s Gallery is located at 13544 Newport Ave. Tustin CA

5. January is ending soon…

Well that went fast. I swear that I blinked and it was over. Oh well, now it is over and we are ready to do some serious work here at the studios. Time for a quick update on what we have been doing.

girloctoeditedsmaller
Girl and Octopus. Pen, ink, and marker on the left. Acrylic on wood panel on the right.

Diana has been busy working on several commissions, along with the art that is going into several books that she is collaborating on. Besides those she has been working on whole slew of new ACEOs (Art Card Editions and Originals); along with then making some of them into acrylics paintings.

Not sleeping, I’m writing… honestly.

I have been busy on getting the writing done on several of our projects.  This includes the two books I am doing with Diana, plus a zine we are going to sell at cons. The zine will allow me to get out some shorter form narrative quickly and for Diana to try some new art in a different type of layout.

All in all, we think everything is progressing well and we will have some amazing things to showcase this year.

6. A bit of the year in review so far…

We are fast approaching the end of 2015 and what a ride it has been with a lot of highs and a few lows. This not a complete review of the year, just wanted to hit some major points; the name change, conventions, and things happening in the near future.

11149432_702381843204927_3669126420781990813_n
This was actually the original idea for our logo believe it or not.

First up, the name change of the company to Ghoulish Bunny Studios. Diana and I had been discussing that for quite some time. We had spent quite a lot of time and effort expanding the brand of Diana Levin Art, so we did not make the decision lightly. The main reason we decided on the change was due to the fact that we wanted to expand the business into a collaborative effort between the two of us. We are working on two projects together currently and wanted to brand them under a collective name.

Another reason for the change was easier name recognition. We have done a lot of cons. Met and talked to lots of people. Business cards galore given out. Yet people do not like to remember names of other people. Countless people show me art that they have bought at cons and when I asked who did it, they draw a blank and can’t remember the artist name (hell, I am guilty of doing it). What they do remember is catchy company names or slogans.

When we finally unveiled the name in August with our new banner and mascot Stitches, we were excited and nervous at the same time. What if everyone hated the name? What if it didn’t click with people? What if it wasn’t memorable enough? All these thoughts ran through our minds and luckily it was for naught. The response was overly positive. Everyone loved the name, they thought it was creative and cute. People remembered the name and had an easier time finding our table when they wanted to return. It was a success to say the least and we hope to expand the brand recognition even more next year.

Back in 2011… my how our display has grown since then.

Next up is the conventions we did throughout the year. In 2015 we did more shows than we had ever done before, with May and September being the two busiest. Overall… fantastic year, sales were up and many opportunities were opened up for us. Many a great shows and wonderful people made this our most successful year; not just in our home market of Los Angeles, but also in new markets such as Denver.

That is not to say everything was roses with all the conventions, as we had a few bumps in the road this year. One thing we did notice is that we are oversaturated in Los Angeles, so we are looking to cut down the number of shows we do here. We want to focus on certain key cons in which to make our presence bigger and better; this will take time as we decide what ones to trim from our schedule.

While most of our sales were up, there were a few in which our they were down. Now what caused the sales decline at these shows are not always evident; whether it is from table placement, market oversaturation, or a host of other theories. No matter what we always try to figure out why sales were down and what we can do to rectify it. So we are analyzing the information from the past year and will be making changes in the upcoming year, which brings us to…

The things we are doing in the near future. We are currently getting ready for the Christmas Craft Fair at Knott’s Berry Farm that we are returning for our third year. It is our big end of the year show and are furiously working hard to be prepared as we can be for it so that…

At the beginning of 2016 we are taking time off from doing conventions to focus on our collaborative projects and to reset mentally after the craziness of this year. Diana and I are committed to growing our little company that we love dearly; we want to thank everyone that has supported us through the years, for without you we would not be here.

Thank you

7. Halloween and Comikaze this weekend.

krueger_girl_webHalloween is almost here and there is lots to do before the weekend is here. First up is Comikaze in downtown LA, this is our third year there and we will be in artist alley at table P12. Along with jewelry and prints that are available, Diana will be available to do a limited amount of commissions at the show. We love doing this show (partly for once we get to sleep in our own bed), so come out and enjoy in the festivities.

creepy_scarecrow_webAlso with Halloween coming up on Saturday and Shawn not working HHN, we get to go out to enjoy an evening of frights. Shawn can’t wait, he is polishing his hockey mask up to go do a bit of trick r treating himself. A moment of fun for him before he puts his head down and gets back to work; lots of projects on the horizon and so little time (more info in the near future… we promise).

Everyone have a fun Halloween weekend and we hope to see everyone at Comikaze.

8. More prints than ever…

il_570xN.570525075_bk1e

Our store is coming along nicely as we get more product up and tweak a few things. Shawn has been working diligently to get up most of our prints (though we know there are still a few missing) and we will next be working to get all the available jewelry up. While most of the prints shown will be available at the cons, we will have a quite a few that are online only items. Now it is time to get back to work, as we are getting ready for Sinister Creature Con this weekend.

Cheers!

Shawn and Diana

P.S. Plus we are looking at a few haunted attractions to go visit.

11. Recaps plus a small look to the future…

sam3Our favorite time of the year is coming upon us and with all the frights we have had this year (mainly from a certain computer who shall remain nameless), it will be nice to settle into some normal Halloween terrors. So while it has been a chaotic time of shows and updating the website, it is time to catch up on the blog. First up, some quick recaps of Wizard World Sacramento and San Diego Comic Con.

wizard-world-horiz-logo_01Wizard World Sacramento was, for lack of a better word, a disappointment. The crowd was light. Everything was well organized, the people that run it were fantastic in communicating and keeping us updated. In the end though, the people did not come to the show, and that was a problem we ran into at the Wizard World Las Vegas. We have one more to do up in San Jose in September, but unless something miraculous happens, that will be our last Wizard World show in the foreseeable future.

SDCCTwo weeks later Diana had a table in the famed artist alley of San Diego Comic Con. While there was the logistical nightmare of figuring out how to fit everything onto a 4 foot table, in the end it worked out quite well. Sales were good, several originals were commissioned, and Shawn wandered the halls, keeping the business cards stocked in the Sails Pavilion. Overall a huge success for our first show at San Diego, we can’t wait to make the return trip next year.

scarela_transp_clean_Square-e1427427109238Now onto our August schedule. Next up is the always fun ScareLA, one could say the unofficial start of the Halloween season. This will be our third year vending for the show, which this year will be in a new location at the Pasadena Convention Center. This year will the biggest ScareLA yet and we are excited to be there as it continues to grow. There will be more vendors and haunt attractions than ever before, so if you enjoy Halloween, then this convention is where you should be this weekend.

After ScareLA we will not be doing any shows till a very busy September (five shows over four weekends). But rest we shall not, as we will be busy working on some new products for those upcoming shows. Along with the new art by Diana and the stories that Shawn is working on, we will also be working on videos to post online (more info on those on a later post). So lots to do and less time to do it in, we must wrap this up and get back to work.

Thank you all for supporting us and as always keep creating…

–Diana and Shawn.

12. ScareLA, New Halloween Art and more…

Stitches Halloween cards setScareLA is coming up and we are getting ready. To do something special for our third year, I decide to create these Stitches Does Halloween Mini Print Cards. I will be selling these as a set – 6 cards in each box plus a short poem written by Shawn. For the first 50 sets, I am including a small mystery gift in each box. It could be an exclusive limited edition trading card or a small original sketch.

Stitches the voodoo bunny is one of my new original characters. You will probably see him again in other projects, stories and books. The legend of Stitches is not completely known but many people whisper and speculate. One thing is for sure – Stitches is not for the faint of heart.

If you are going to come to ScareLA, and you definitely should, please stop by our booth #506.  Buy your tickets online.

14. Big WOW ComicFest Recap

Cosplay at big wow comicfest 2015

Cosplay at big wow comicfest 2015

Just this past weekend I tabled for the first time at Big WoW ComicFest, a fun little Comic Convention in San Jose, California. My friend Tamara from theMystic and I took a road trip together and shared a hotel to save on costs.

As often at Cons,  I was dazzled by the many creative cosplayers who attended the show.

I made some cool new friends and picked up a few fun goodies to add to my collection. The one to the right was from Brandon Dicks and the Cthulhu print and comic book was from ComiXpress.

I had the opportunity to hang out with my friend Rick from ZOMs. He was gracious enough to help me out at my table.

Overall I thought the show was well worth the trip.

Thank you to everyone who came to see me. I will see you in September for Wizard World San Jose!

15. Convention Recap and the Start of Ghoulish Bunny Studios

shawn_diana

With so many shows to prep, art to make and projects to work on, it has been a challenge to keep up with blogging. But I wanted to jump back in here and post a recap of all the shenanigans that has been going on with our business and the many things to expect from us in the future. So here goes:

Following a prosperous if somewhat grueling marathon run of Knott’s Berry Farm Holiday Village that took up all of December, Shawn and I took a much needed hiatus from the business for a couple weeks. We took a road trip to Denver to visit Shawn’s family. After we returned, it was back to prepping for the first show of the year, Salt Lake Comic Expo. This was a much smaller event in relation to Salt Lake City Comic Con in September but our sales were only down by a little. Still, we had fun, ate great food and made some new friends.

Long Beach Comic Expo, I will have to admit, was a bit disappointing. I always try to be open and honest about my experiences at various cons. Many times I hesitate to publicly talk about the shortcomings of a given Con and will debate with myself as to the best way to describe an unsuccessful show without bashing it. But because I strive to be more transparent about my experiences running an art business, I will go ahead and share my experience. Long Beach has always been a tough area for me to cultivate a following. I am not sure why that is. My first Comic Convention was Long Beach Comic Con. That was 3 years ago. While in most shows my sales and fan base expends every year, in LB it seems to stay at the beginning level of that very first show. Last years LBCE was surprisingly good for us and that gave me a glimmer of hope it would improve for many years to come. However, I think that the show expended too quickly, adding significantly more vendors without bringing the attendance that would justify that expansion.  Again, I can only speak from my own experience. Although I spoke to many friends at the show who also saw a significant drop in sales.

Sam from Trick or Treat

Spookshow at the Halloween Club in La Mirada

Scary Carrie and MeThis was a fun, free one-day pop-up Halloween themed event that took place in the costume store parking lot. This has definitely become one of my favorites and I hope they continue to bring this show back every year. Despite the warm temperature that day, the turnout was pretty damn good and everyone was having a great time. Our sales were up from last year. It’s free for vendors with a $25 deposit that got returned to us a week later. The crowd was just really great and enthusiastic.

Emerald City Comic Con and Mosnterpalooza

Double show weekend for Shawn and I. I fly out to Seattle for ECCC, while Shawn tables at Monsterpalooza in Burbank. Like last year, this was one incredible weekend of sales for both of us. What can I say… Emerald City Comic Con is really great show for both vendors and attendees. The people Pacific Northwest seems to have a healthy appetite for unique and original art. Monsterpalooza is more of an industry show. It feels a lot more like a trade show that has evolved to include a healthy mixture of artists, writers and horror themed artisans.

Next Up: WonderCon in Anaheim. Dealers Table DSL- 10. Hope to See you there!

WonderCon floor map

And now for more great news:

Gloomy girl print1. You might have already heard, Shawn and I are changing the business name to “Ghoulish Bunny Studios”. This new business will include my artwork, plus Shawn’s writing and videos.

2. We are working on a picture book. Me illustrating and Shawn writing. We will be setting up a kickstarter for it.

3. More new art. I am trying really hard to finish work that I have started a while back. And I try to produce at least one new piece for each show.

4. We are phasing out certain products to make room for more. Many of the mini prints we offer will be retired so that we can make room for…

5. Sketchbooks. I already put my first one out this year. my next one will have more pages, more drawings and a better quality print.

6. Spooky stores from Shawn. He as been working on his writing and coming up with some great little short horror stories. We are going to put together a book of his work that will also include illustrations from me.

7. New website and online store “Ghoulish Bunny Studios” where you can shop directly from us. More products will be added, more artwork available and Shawn’s stories and videos.

So far this is as much as I can share at this time. We are always expending, changing and evolving. Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years. We strive to produce quality work and products for our fiendish friends. Thanks for reading!

16. ScareLA is coming…

After a couple of weeks off from vending and a trip to San Diego Comic Con plus a visit from Shawn’s family, it is time to get back to work. I have the honor of returning to ScareLA for its second year on August 9th and 10th. I had so much fun last year and I am excited about this year as it will be bigger and better.

I will be at booth #628 and if you have yet to buy your tickets yet you can use the coupon code LEVINSCARE to get 20% off of your tickets. I will have all my prints, pendants (including my pocket watches), and an assortment of my originals for sale. So come down, say hi, and have a frightfully good time.

17. Some new shows coming up soon…

Looks like I am not taking off as much time as I thought. I have signed up for two small one day shows in the coming weeks; I go a bit nuts if I stay in my studio for too long.

carnival noir

The first show I am doing is Carnival Noir in downtown Los Angeles this weekend on July 12th. This is a wild event at the Club Monte Cristo; there will be DJs, dancing, magic, burlesque, and plenty of vendors there. This is a 21 and over event only with drink specials and good times for all. Tickets are on sale here.

4 hour film festival

The following week I will be at the Egyptian Theater for the 4 Hour Film Festival Double Feature and Carnival Masquerade on July 19th. The films being shown are the two classics Freaks and Nosferatu, both amazing and creepy films to chill you to the bone. There will be the Cirque Berzerk along with other live performances. This is also a 21 and over event and tickets are available here.

Have fun and keep creating…

19. Home once again, at least for a moment…

Commission Sketch of Chris Hemsworth.

Commission Sketch of Chris Hemsworth.

After a whirlwind tour of the southwest, I am finally home and ready to take a nap. Yet there is no rest for the wicked, new art to do, a book to illustrate, shows to prepare for, and generally going crazy… in a good way. So where to begin? Let’s start with a short recap of the shows I attended.

First up was there was the Long Beach Comic Expo which this year expanded to two days this year. This turned out to be a great move as attendance was great this year and everyone had a great time. We had an odd placement for our table that had me a bit worried, but it all worked out quite well. Lots of great costumes, fun panels for all ages, plus perfect Long Beach weather, what more could one ask for? Next year they are holding it earlier in the year on February 28th and March 1st, plus they are moving into the larger halls, roughly about five times of the space they had this year. So they are going bigger and better, hopefully they are not expanding too big, too fast as I love this convention and want to see it continue for years to come.

Maleficent and Evil Queen looking good... I mean evil.

Maleficent and Evil Queen looking good… I mean evil.

Then it was off to the surface of the sun… I mean Arizona for the Phoenix Comicon, which was a fantastic show. There were over 77,000 fans in attendance that kept me and Shawn busy through the weekend. I was amazed at the cosplayers that braved the heat in full costume, brave dedicated fans they are. On a note about Phoenix, I love this show so much that next year is a big thing is happening. Drum roll please… I am moving out of the artist alley into a booth for the show next year. It is amazing and nerve wracking at the same time, but the correct move as my business moves forward and grows.

diana minion

The minion of Mystical Apothecary

Shawn and I stayed in Phoenix for the week (thank you Keith), as we had a show the following weekend, Mad Monster Party. This was a small horror convention that took place in downtown Phoenix. It was a fun little show (lots of fun because we were next to our friends from The Mystical Apothecary) that has promise if they bring it back next year, lots of cool fans of horror showed up and there were some great celebrity guests to meet. One of the problems was that since it was the week after the comic con and there might have been some fans that were too worn out to come to this event. There were also some people that seem to find out about the event by happenstance and were unaware of the Mad Monster Party before hand. Their main show is in Charlotte, NC and that one has a great turnout; so maybe with some patience and love, the Phoenix show will grow to attract more attendees.

Diana versus Bumblebee... plus Justin and Hilary Orr photo bombing.

Taking Bumblebee down… plus Justin and Hilary Orr photo bombing.

Finally we headed north to the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con, a show I vended at last year on their inaugural show. Taking place at the South Point Casino (which is quickly becoming one of my favorite casinos), this year it was bigger and better organized in the placement of tables and booths. Attendance was up this year, but sales were down slightly, but overall a successful show. Thanks to our booth neighbors of Abe Lopez and Stuart Smithee; also thanks to the photo bombers supreme of Justin and Hilary Orr from across the aisle.

With Abraham Lopez... with Nic Cage?

With Abraham Lopez… and Nic Cage?!?

I have a few weeks off before San Diego Comic Con (sadly still no booth, but I will have art up in the Sails Pavilion gallery there), so I must go work on some new art pieces for the upcoming shows.

Have fun and keep creating…

20. Catching Up with Blogging

peggy sue diner

We ain’t afraid of no dinosaur!

I realized that I have not posted in a while. With all the shows I have been traveling to, I barely had time to keep up with my blog. Since I have posted, I was writing about the Wild West Fest at the Calico Ghost Town in Yermo, California. All around it was a fun show; we stayed with my in-laws at a nice hotel in Barstow for the weekend of the show. It was also my birthday so we all went out to eat the legendary Peggy Sue’s Diner on Sunday night.

Then it was off to Seattle again for Emerald City Comicon.  It was an amazing show, with wonderful people. I have to give a big thank you to Sarah for the help at my booth (allowing me a few moments of rest to stretch my legs). The atmosphere was electric and everyone has my gratitude for making me feel so welcome up there. One of these days I will get Shawn up there so that I can leave him at the booth and go explore the city hehehe.

But that will only happen if the infamous Monsterpalooza does not fall on the same weekend as ECCC, like it did this year. Here is Shawn to tell you more. Shawn here and I have three words: It… was… awesome! I had a great time, though I wished Diana was there so that I could have walked around to check out more things. Oh well, there is always next year. All the fans were amazing and thank you to everyone for supporting Diana. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Beware the Gotham Bunnies

Beware the Gotham Bunnies

Thank you Shawn, so following those two shows was Wondercon. Oh how I love this show and it is one of my favorites. Not only did I get to see all my regular fans from SoCal, but Shawn being there allowed me to leave my booth from time to time to browse the artist alley. I got to catch up with some friends and meet some amazing artist for the first time. This was also the debut of my latest in the Terrible Trio series… the Gotham Bunnies, so cute, yet so evil.

Then I had a rare weekend off, and then it was time to get ready for Texas Frightmare Weekend. I was excited as I had never been to Dallas-Fort Worth, so this was a great opportunity to reach a new fan base. After a less than sterling start of the day (looking at you American Airlines) I made it to the show with only a half hour to set up. But after that it was one of the best weekends I have ever had at a show. It was intense, amazing, overwhelming at times and I can’t wait to go back next year. I may even bring Shawn along for this trip, I think he would enjoy the show very much.

Back to Southern California the following week for the Bat’s Day in the Park Black Market. This is always a fun show to do where I tend to pick up some great little pieces. It is only a one day show, so a bit more laid back and relaxing compared to the multi-day shows. Though being so close to Disney makes me want to go buy a ticket and go on some rides.

Finally last but not least was another trip up to Seattle (seriously, maybe I need to rent a room out there) for Crypticon. This was a great little horror convention with some pretty cool guests. I am starting to recognize a few people that have seen me at some of the area shows and meet some new fans. Thanks once again to Tamara of The Mystical Apothecary for being my traveling buddy once again.

Whoa, I was a bit more behind on this blog than I realized. Mid year resolution, I shall be better about updating my blog in a more timely manner. I have four more shows to do before I take some time off to do some more art and work on some upcoming projects, one of which is a book.

Keep on creating and have fun–

Diana

21. Heading to the Outlands…

calico2014 Heading to the Outlands...After a very hectic month, including having two shows in two states on the same days (more about that in a later blog), I head out into the desert this coming weekend. Where are these famed outlands you ask? The Calico Ghost Town near Barstow, CA, where the Wild West Fest shall be going on, a steampunk extravaganza.

spgiraffelogo Heading to the Outlands...I am excited as I have never been to a ghost town before, and I am sure I can draw some inspiration from there for some new art. There will be panels on plenty of steampunk related subjects, hot air balloon rides, and a concert on Saturday by Steam Powered Giraffe (very good group, highly recommend seeing them). Plus there will be plenty of vendors including my good friend Tamara of The Mystical Apothecary.

I am off to finish getting ready for the show and the upcoming Wondercon, but I will have a blog up soon about Emerald City Comicon and Monsterpalooza.

Keep creating and always have fun!

23. Time flies when you’re flying…

My first fly away show is in the books and it was quite the learning experience. And now I get to do it all over again next month, time to go crazy. I also added another show in the Seattle area… I have a feeling I will be up in that region quite a bit.

shadow wings 231x300 Time flies when youre flying...

Shadow Wings

I had my two new fantasy prints for sale at FaerieCon West, the first is called Shadow Wings which is on sale online at my etsy store and storenvy, also available as a pendant here and here. The next print is called Contact, a cute fairy meets a small dragon on a branch for the first time… so adorable. This print will be available for sale at my online stores soon.

FaerieCon West was a fun show; great people, atmosphere, and awesome costumes galore. I loved it so much in that area that I will be back up there for Emerald City Comicon in March. On top of that, I have added the Crypticon in Seattle to my schedule for May, a horror convention that will be awesome.

First Contact 300x220 Time flies when youre flying...

Contact

But before those conventions take place, I will be going to one closer to home, the ConDor 21 in San Diego in March. This is a sci-fi/fantasy convention with a bit of steampunk flair, it looks like a lot of fun. Also a reminder that I will have a booth at Monsterpalooza in March also, manned by Shawn, so don’t forget to stop and say hi to him.

Then the Wild West Show at Calico Ghost Town, Wondercon, Texas Frightmare Weekend, and Bat’s Day in the Fun Park… whew! Not to even mention an occasional Hollywood Farmer’s Market or a small pop up show there, no rest for the wicked I guess.

Have fun and keep creating…
