Why combine math and literature? It is important for educators to use images that matter to children-images that have the power to capture their attention. We can use these images to make concepts clear, meaningful and memorable. To us, Sidney's palace may be imaginary, but the story is quite real to children. They relate to Sidney's world and, through this vision, to its mathematics and poetry. The characters that people the palace provide children with a friendly, fun learning experience in a warm, enchanting environment. Literature also engages those students who sometimes lose interest during math sessions. 7 - 1 = 6 might be boring, but squishing a cherry on the floor when you have 7 cherries and want to have only 6 can be great fun. When mathematics becomes this specific, children understand its relevance. Why poetry? Poets and musicians (and, yes, children) have a sub-conscious inner ear that hears and keeps track of properties such as the number, pitch, and duration of sounds. Rhythm, a quality in both music and poetry, is produced by the patterned repetition of stressed and unstressed syllables.
