Hi Mike
Imagine my surprise to get your email. I hope all is well.
Like I tell the rangers that contact me, the book is a novel and I state repeatedly that it is not factual.
But people have pointed out that some characters seem based on actual people.
All I can say is I wrote the book with the main point that there are no clear cut answers in life. There's always a consequence. The main reason i used that summer as a backdrop was the idea of such an awful, nasty thing happening at such a beautiful godly place. And for the most part - we, the people - are the ones that let those kind of things happen because - well - we're people.
Writing 30 years later you don't think of the consequences of the words even if it's a novel. So I hope you forgive me for anything that might have hit a nerve. As you can see in the book nothing is clearcut with the Haswell family.
And eveyone sees things differently. You didn't view the portrayal as TOO negative. Some rangers think I was TOO nice. My thoughts are mostly we're just people and we do the best we can with what we have.
Thanks for reading the book and offering up the feedback.
