I taught Primary school kids for 30 years in Sydney schools and always took opportunities to choose kids who wanted to be in a little musical I had written or a kids's film I had been working on for ages and finally wanted to shoot.

After finishing up teaching I wrote half a dozen picture book stories: one for Kindys and Year 1, another for Year 2 and 3 and so one up to Year 6 with a story on self-esteem called The Girl With the Shower (no, not the girl IN the shower!).

One exciting thing happened one day when I had finished reading my recently-written story, The Giant One, to Year 4-5 in the school library. It was only this class that reacted this way but it was magic. I finished reading the story to them and sat looking at them. And waited. Usually after a couple of seconds some child makes a comment. But no one did. Five seconds gone by. Not a sound. What must have been nearly 10 seconds went by... and finally someone said something. I will never forget how that story impacted on that particular group of children.
