Veronica Lawlor is an illustrator and the president of Studio 1482, an illustration and design collective. She is especially known for her reportage illustration and her clients include Brooks Brothers, Hyatt Hotel, 3M Corp., Genentech, and others. Her picture book, I Was Dreaming to Come to America: Memories of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, has been awarded by the NCSS, exhibited in Washington DC, and is part of the curriculum of the New York State school systems. Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review, and called the book, "visually and emotionally stunning."

The book was published in hardcover by Viking Press, and is currently being reprinted in softcover by Puffin Books.
