Valeska moved to the United States from her native Germany as a child. Upon her arrival, picture books, cartoons and puppetry provided great comfort - their vivid pictures and actions superseding the need for words. This fascination with communicating through image and movement motivates much of her work as an artist and teacher.

Valeska now lives in Baltimore, Maryland, where she teaches in the Fibers Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Valeska is an active member of the city's performance art community, collaborating with a variety of organizations and artists, including Black Cherry Puppet Theater, Fluid Movement and Nanaprojects, on public performance projects. She founded her own troupe, the Cause Company, in 2004, creating variety acts and street performance projects.

Valeska also creates works on paper, and enjoys occasional gigs as a freelance illustrator.
