The little mouse’s name certainly does not sound like a brave, adventure seeking hero’s name, but that is the way it is supposed to be. DiCamillo talks directly to the reader at the end of some of the chapters, which I feel added a personal touch. The animals and humans can talk to each other, and there is a little bit of French here and there. The chapters are very short, but at the end entice the reader to continue. The story reads fast, and is absolutely delightful the whole time.
The cover seems to have been created with a pastel medium. The sewing needle might appear to the reader to be the mouse’s sword. Inside the book are several drawings in black and white, maybe pencil. The shading gives the illustrations great depth with the shadows and light variations. Some of the edges of the pages are torn tags: I read, I recommend, 4 year old loved it |
