My 5-year-old self, and my 11 and 15-year-old selves, are very close to the surface. I remember vividly seeing the moon in the daytime sky for the first time, and thinking I had made a world-class discovery. And the first time I put my foot in the Goose River and found out what silt was! I sank in up to my ankles.

My published books are almost all nonfiction. I write about science, geography and history, events and people and places, with a simple, straightforward style and a friendly voice. I have written several unpublished stories/picture books, and the child is right there with me as I write. Maybe I should do more stories?

After years as an executive in education publishing, I have gone freelance. Maybe, besides searching for serious work, I should kick up my heels and write more stories. Along with playing in my small garden (lawn is being transformed into a wildflower meadow, I hope) and communing with my astonishingly black cat, Darwin.
