I'm a Pacific Northwest author and nature photographer who grew up in a small farming community in northern California (population 5,500 at its peak). I learned to read before kindergarten thanks to an older brother, who taught me letter sounds.  For "graduation," he presented me with a beat-up flashlight, his favorite third-grade reader, and this seasoned advice: "If you hear the hall floor squeak, dive under the covers. They'll think you're asleep."
