My Yarn Children's Book at Dial (2015) officially has a new title. It's now called Knit Together and I couldn't be more pleased with the new title. Below are my first preliminary thumbnails for the cover. I'll have previews of the interior art before the end of the year.

Also just a reminder, I have a  Santiago Stays book signing at Barnes & Noble Emeryville this Friday at 4pm. Hope a few of my bay area friends can make it out!

30. Horn Book Review November/December Issue

Here is the latest Horn Book review for Maria Had A Little Llama. Woo hoo!

Maria and her llama smile out at us from the cover of this bilingual picture book, a riff on “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Maria’s tale, told in English and Spanish, is set in the Peruvian Alps. The bold ink and gouache illustrations include plentiful cultural clues: the market, the village, the traditional headwear, and the musical instruments all help to place readers in the setting. The text mirrors the traditional tale (“He followed her to school one day. / Un dia le siguio a la escuela”), and the limited amount of text allows both languages to appear on the same page or spread. Maria and her llama, though, are the stars of this book. Their personalities and their affection for each other shine through. As if to confirm it, the last spread opens to a scene of children, llamas, and local Peruvian musicians playing and waving as they encircle our two stars dancing in the center. This is a scene young children will return to again and again. jim st. clair

In other news, I'm participating in ABFFE Holiday Children's Art Auction. This illustration from Santiago Stays will be up for auction.

Lastly, I'm happy to be working with the people at 826 Valencia again. I'm illustrating their Winter Mailer. Final artwork soon.

32. Loro Mango and Alumni Award

I am working on a picture book with Candlewick called Loro Mango. After getting my roughs approved and feedback, I'm now beginning the tight sketches. Here are some character sketches.

In other news, I'm being honored by the Academy of Art University with the Distinguished Alumni Award. I'm in disbelief and so appreciative for the Honor. Thank you to everyone at Academy. It's been my home in way or another for 8 great years.

37. Scholar Share and More

I just got back from Scholar Share Children's Book Festival in Sacramento where I read Let's Go, Hugo! and drew for the kids.

On a random note,  I was going through old pictures and stumbled upon a picture of my childhood dog. Before there was a Hugo or Santiago, there was a chihuahua who allowed me to put scarves on it and enjoyed eating turkey legs.

41. Let's Go, Hugo! Book Signing and Other Things

Thank you so much to the wonderful people at Woodward Library in Fresno specifically Krista Riggs for coordinating the event. It was a wonderful crowd, and I was delighted to share Let's Go, Hugo! with such a receptive group. We even had a little crowd participation. I gave the crowd a sneak peek of Maria Had A Little Llama/Maria Tenía Una Llamita and my mom read with me in Spanish.

In other news, I am putting together many great events for the fall. I'll be having a solo show at Tr!ckster Gallery, showing a few pieces at Studio Gallery, and scheduled book signings with some of my favorite indie book stores. I'll be posting information closer to the dates.

Lastly, I'm finally starting the final artwork for my Yarn Story (Dial 2015). Previews soon!

43. Hooray for Santiago Stays Reviews!

My upcoming book Santiago Stays (which will be on  bookshelves September 3rd) is getting great Reviews from Publisher's Weekly and Kirkus:

I've posted the Kirkus Review below and a link to Publisher's Weekly.

SANTIAGO STAYS

Why won’t Santiago come?

In this simple tale of pet camaraderie, a boy tries to play with his dog, plying him with ever-escalating enticements. A toy, a ball, a walk, a treat? A very special treat? Various options are presented in minimal, conversational text, with accessible pictorial cues to let young listeners and readers figure out precisely what is being offered. Warm, colorful, digitally enhanced illustrations rendered in pencil, ink, marker and tissue paper are the focus here, as the lovable, resolute pup and his very determined boy each try to communicate in his own way. But wait! What’s that cry coming from the corner? The boy’s sister, of course! And as Santiago knows, she needs to know she is not alone. “Don’t cry. / We’re here! // Good boy, Santiago,” the boy says, recognizing both very special members of his family. While not stated, the boy seems to be of Hispanic or Latino origin, adding a subtle, multicultural flavor to this appealing, straightforward selection.

Dog lovers and older siblings alike will bask in the quiet humor as they try to solve this gentle canine mystery. (Picture book. 2-5)

On a side note, I presented for the SCBWI in Oakland over the weekend. Thank you to Brian Bowes and to the great group of attendees.
