31. Even More New Art!

California has a rich continuing history of amazing artistry. Although Chemers Gallery showcases artists from all over the world, we have a special place in our hearts for local, California talent. Let's face it, we're all a little different out here!  We'd like to introduce you to the work of one artist based in Laguna Beach, and re-introduce you to the work of another based in San Francisco...

April Raber - oils
Main Beach, oil on board by April Raber

Karen has admired the paintings of local artist, April Raber, for years and invited her to participate in our Viewpoints Orange County All Media show a couple of months ago. We were thrilled to see her two entries to the show and we couldn't wait to see more of her work. April truly sees the world differently. Her cityscapes and urban scenes have a wonderful ethereal quality that soften and animate what could be an otherwise spartan setting. Her soft colors seem to light her canvases with a warm glow. April has spent her life immersed in art, from drawing as a child to classes in high school to an art degree from BYU. Aside from a few years spent working as a designer and art director, April has made her art her career and is "constantly pushing for the experience of amazement."

Larry Morace - pastel
Trolley From Sea, mixed media by Larry Morace
It's been awhile since we've had new work from Larry Morace, so his latest 5 paintings are a welcome addition to Chemers Gallery! This Bay Area artist has been painting up a storm to create his signature city scenes of San Francisco and the surrounding environs. Full of life and movement, Larry's paintings present the city as if seen from the window of a moving vehicle. His current work is in pastel on gessoed panel, colored Canson papers and primed Arches paper, but he also paints with oils on canvas. Hailing from Louisiana and educated at Indiana University, Larry's influences include Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, and Wayne Thiebaud for their use of color and simplification of the scene down to the most important details.

But wait, there's more...new art!
Keep scrolling to see what else is fresh and exciting!

Stay tuned for the list of artists who will be sharing their talents with us live during the Enderle Center Summer Concert series! Mark your calendars, the first one is Thursday June 20th!

32. Do We Have Something New For You!

Chemers Gallery has been busy busy busy the first part of 2013, bringing you unique shows, events, book signings and community projects. Now that we can catch our breath, here's a sampling of what's new!

New Artists!

Lorraine Bubar - Papercuts

Playing Outside, papercut by Lorraine Bubar

Lorraine Bubar was introduced to us by Karen's friend, Debbie N, who said "You must see her work!" And she was right! Lorraine is an artist who "paints" with paper and an x-acto knife. She brings a thoughtful consideration to her stunningly delicate papercuts, drawing upon the tradition of folk art found in the heritage of Eastern European Judaism. Each one of Lorraine's intricate images are made from layers of decorative papers that have been cut to create illusions of silhouettes, water and depth. Lorraine often incorporates animal imagery within her work to draw comparrison to old papercut designs that used animals for symbolic meaning. A motif she returns to again and again is the koi fish, which represents ambition, strength and good fortune. We think it was our good fortune to meet Lorraine and become familiar with her unique papercuts!

Richard Jones - Glass

Enso Bowl, glass by Richard Jones
Elegant, Asian-inspired lines feature in the refined glasswork of new artist Richard Jones. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, he founded Studio Paran in Wisconsin in 1989 with a passion and commitment to be present in his creative process. Richard strives to push forward and realize new ideas using ancient processes. He sees himself primarily as a craftsman and pours his heart and soul into his signature decorative yet functional designs. We see Richard as a talented glass artist who pairs refined colors and shapes to create something that is just oh-so-yummy to look at!

Johanna Westerman - Children's Book Illustration

Sweeping Under Carpet, watercolor by Johanna Westerman
Children's book illustrator Johanna Westerman has been drawing since the age of two, filling pages with castles, mermaids and fairy tale characters. Inspired at an early age by the lush animation of Walt Disney's Bambi, Johanna went on to study art at Scripps College and Rhode Island School of Design. Rich in color and filled with intricate details, her beautiful watercolor illustrations are filled with tiny brushstrokes and are saturated in color. Johanna finds herself attracted to the work and technique of the early Flemish masters and miniature paintings. Johanna's picture books include Mother Holly and Wynken, Blynken and Nod. A project that was especially dear to her heart was Mandy, written by Julie Andrews Edwards and one of Johanna's absolutely favorite books from childhood.

New Artwork!

Nick Capaci - Fused Glass

Square Plate in Olive, Grey & Blue, fused glass by Nick Capaci

You are probably familiar with the bold, geometric monotypes of printmaker Nick Capaci, but did you know he also works in fused glass? Nick has long been intrigued by glass as a medium and the challenges inherent in creating with this fluid material. He marries his love of two-dimensional painting and printmaking with his approach to glasswork. Nick's use of color and pattern translates beautifully between media. Looking closely at his functional and decorative plates and panels, you can see layer upon layer of color, pattern and design, an element also present in his fine art prints. Ranging from subtle, muted tones of translucent glass to bright eye-catching color, Nick's finished work is as unpredictable as the materials he favors.

Maria Counts - Ceramics

Blue-Eyed Lion Dragon, ceramic by Maria Counts
The ever-whimsical Maria Counts has been creating up a storm to keep up with our demands - we want more, we want more! Making everything from butter dishes topped with hearts and birds to vases with faces, hearts and flowers, sculptures of free-standing kimonos to clocks adorned with lovebirds and owls, Maria does it all. She's even created a selection of absolutely adorable ceramic heart fortune cookies! On a more serious side, her very latest, hot-off-the-press pieces are sculptural ceramic dragon sculptures. But, this is just a teaser because they're all sold! (You have to be quick on the draw with Linda around!) We just had to share this wonderful blue-eyed lion dragon with you since you can't come in and see it in person. Maria - will you pretty please make more? With sugar on top?

Robert Held - Glass

Glass heart paperweights by Robert Held

Longtime glass heart fave Robert Held has announced his retirement, much to our sadness and gladness. We couldn't be happier for Robert as he embarks on a new beginning, but we will miss his beautiful glass work! After 37 years in the industry he's decided that it's time to pursue his other art interests and move to be closer with his fiance. We've stocked up on his heart paperweights, elegant vases and bowls.  Hurry in to snap up your favorite heart designs before they're gone forever!

We have just a couple of precious weeks of calm before our next series of events - our annual Summer Artist Demonstrations during the Enderle Center Summer Concert series! Mark your calendars now so you don't miss out on meeting your favorite local painters and craftspeople at Chemers Gallery!

Updated April 24:
Chemers Gallery is busy transforming into a slice of orange...Orange County, that is! With the help of 40 different professional and amateur artists and one very thoughtful and considered juror we present close to 80 unique viewpoints of Orange County from north to south!

Mary Aslin takes her role as judge seriously - she spent over 3 contemplative hours at Chemers Gallery yesterday choosing the prize winners, which will be announced during the artist reception on Saturday, April 27th. In addition to Mary's choices, the Enderle Center is awarding their own prize!

Come during the day on Saturday to enjoy the Enderle Center Spring Swing, featuring the live music of the Laguna Swing Society from 1-4pm. Grab some dinner and then join us for the Viewpoints artist reception from 5:30-8:00pm!

Chemers Gallery and the Tustin Art League have once again teamed up to bring you their annual juried show of professional and amateur artists from around southern California. You may remember our annual Scenes of Tustin show, and this year that same show has become Viewpoints: Orange County All Media. For our 6th annual exhibit, we stepped up the competition by expanding the scope of the show to all of Orange County. The response was tremendous, and we received more applicants than ever before - over 130! Mary Aslin had the difficult task of selecting almost 80 pieces to showcase.

We're so excited to see the growth of this show over 6 years. We know this show will be our best to date!

Viewpoints Orange County All Media 2013 brings you familiar images of the Orange County area from both professional and non-professional artists. Artworks range in medium from oils, watercolor and pastel to photography, mixed media and encaustic.

Come on in to discover a new favorite vista or two and meet the artists at the opening reception Saturday, April 27th from 5:30 - 8:00 pm.  If you can't make it that evening, you can still catch the show through May 11th. Don't forget to put May 4th on your calender, too, for a special judges walk through with Mary Aslin at 2pm!

All works are available for sale and can be previewed on our website or in person after April 24th.

Many of you are familiar with Dr. James L. Doti through his work as the president of Chapman University, but did you know he's also the author of two children's books? It's true! Both books are illustrated by talented artist Lisa Mertins, whom you may know through her delicate, whimsical ceramics.

Jimmy Finds His Voice, written by Dr. James L. Doti, illustrated by Lisa Mertins
We're excited to invite you to a very special reception for Dr. Doti and Lisa to mark the release of their second book, Jimmy Finds His Voice. Please join us on Thursday, March 14th from 6 - 9pm to meet both the author and illustrator, purchase original artwork and books, and sample Nonna's wonderful meat pie and biscotti recipies that are so dear to Dr. Doti's heart. A portion of all sales will benefit the Communication Sciences and Disorders program within the College of Educational Studies at Chapman University.

Jimmy Finds His Voice is a true story about little Jimmy's speech impediment and his journey to overcome his fears to become an inspiration to his peers.

Lisa's adorable mixed media illustrations are a perfect complement to the narrative. Her vivid colors are arresting and convey the mood and tone of Dr. Doti's works seamlessly.

45. Special Guests Just Added!

Fartiste, written by Kathleen Krull & Paul Brewer, illustrated by Boris Kulikov
Chemers Gallery is simply full of surprises, especially around this time of year! The authors of Fartiste, one of our most popular books this year, contacted us recently to ask if they could participate in our 21st Annual Children's Book Illustration Art Show & Book Signing, and we said "YES, PLEASE!" How lucky are we??

Kathleen Krull and Paul Brewer will be joining us this Saturday, December 1st, for the opening reception and to sign their "explosively funny, mostly true story" about a man and his unique "talent." PLUS, they will be opening our talks and demonstrations at 1:30pm with a dramatic reading of Fartiste! It's music to our ears!

Kathleen is also the author of the Giants of Science series and will be signing alongside illustrator, Boris Kulikov. And, if that weren't enough, we'll have a limited number of copies of her Lives of series for signing the day of the show. (Sorry, no pre-orders on those!) Check out our book list for updated info!
See you Saturday!

46. Karen's Picks!

Even with the tremendous amount of preparation for our Children’s Book Illustration Art Show, this is my favorite time of year! Enchantment, excitement & emotions abound! It is always fun to see which books & illustrations are most popular and the adoring fans’ reactions.

The overall theme of this year’s books & illustrations seems to be “Let’s get serious.” Unintentionally, so many of our books are biographical & historical, portraying scientists to sports figures and slavery to the design of the Statue of Liberty. Don’t worry, we have books and illustrations that will just make you smile, too!

Before I give you my picks, I just want to say our illustrators are the nicest, most creative, most giving people on the planet! And, we are so excited to be partnering with The Wooden Floor as our beneficiary. And, thanks to all our volunteers, both personal friends and Chapman University associates!

Helen's Big World, illustrated by Matt Tavares
Let’s talk Matt Tavares We have no illustrations from his newest book, Helen’s Big World: The Life of Helen Keller, but I love the way the book is written and laid out. It has decorative endpapers (Barbara Sproat that is for you!), teaches letters of the alphabet in sign language and has inspirational quotes by Helen. It is a must read.

Liberty's Hands, mixed media by Matt Tavares
The illustrations for Lady Liberty, the story of the idea and construction, are nothing short of extraordinary. The book isn’t half bad either. My favorite piece from this book shows the construction of Lady Liberty’s hand.  Starting with the wood structure and spiraling up the arm. The detail and architecture is exquisite.

Cat and Chick, Prismacolor and watercolor by Chris Sheban
Something about Chris Sheban makes you wonder how he gets such depth, emotion and life in his watercolor and colored pencil illustrations. The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly is a wonderful chapter books with thoughtful black & white illustrations. This image shown here is the cover of the paperback book & is shown in black & white in the hardback. Sorry, it’s sold already… but you must come see how the eyes look real and the fabulous frame we put on it.

Watching Western, Prismacolor and watercolor by Chris Sheban
I can’t stop thinking about this illustration from Night on the Range. The book is adorable but this stand- alone image is something to behold. It is little boy through and through. The magic of the young cowboy’s fascination with the T.V. and the glow around his body makes you want to giddyup and go. Pardner, you gotta come see this framing, too!

Sylvia Long's Mother Goose
Lovingly Sylvia Long Remember all those wonderful Mother Goose poems your mom read to you and then you read to your kids and grandkids? They are all beautifully compiled in Sylvia’s treasury. Vivid in color and filled with fantasy, they are full of life.

A Butterfly is a Traveler, watercolor by Sylvia Long
If you would rather learn something or teach a lesson, A Butterfly is Patient will fill that bill. This book explains the life cycle of the butterfly in breath-taking fashion. Great for little kids because of the beautiful pictures and good for a little older with its scientific interpretation. This picture of the field of butterflies is harmony in motion.

Across the Alley, illustrated by E.B. Lewis
Emotions flow with E. B. Lewis Almost every book we have of E.B.’s is chock full of life’s lessons and sensitivity. The book that speaks to me is Across the Alley. It’s a book about a Jewish boy & African American boy who live across the alley from one another. They learn from each other and more importantly their families learn from them. It makes me teary just to type these words.

Laying on Beach, watercolor by E.B. Lewis

On the lighter side is The Secret World of Walter Anderson. It’s true story about the artist and his very private life. These watercolor illustrations and the one shown here, in particular, remind me so much of Andrew Wyeth in both the coloring and style. I just want to relax right next to Walter and gaze into the evermore.

At Blackboard, pen and ink by Boris Kulikov

Boldly Boris Kulikov First of all, I’ve always wanted Albert Einstein, to be my grandfather. So, how could I not choose both the book, Giants of Science: Albert Einstein, and this quintessential illustration of Albert at the blackboard? It calls to me with it's sweet scientific notation.

Pushing Baby Bugy, mixed media by Boris Kulikov
I love Boris’ bright array of colors and the way he combines them in his fanciful illustrations.  This illustration from Castle on Hester Streetis a patchwork of color, personality and history. The way Boris combines the old world with the new delights the senses in this whimsical illustration.

Only one and a half weeks to select your favorite book or illustration!
We hope to see you on Dec 1st 1-5pm, if not before.

Don’t forget, authors Kathleen Krull and Paul Brewer, will be signing along-side Boris Kulikov. And, we are so fortunate that Kathleen will be doing a dramatic reading of Fartiste, the hysterical true story of a Frenchman!

Woo-hoo! We’re almost there!

47. Jennifer's Book Picks

I've been told that if reading were an Olympic sport, I'd be a gold medalist. So you must know what my favorite time of year at Chemers Gallery is, right? That's right, it's Children's Book Illustration Show time, when we get wonderous artwork and fantastic books from five talented illustrators!

Unusually, this year's book selection is on the serious side, with a great number ranging from historical to biographical to scientific. And oh my goodness, as if choosing my favorite books weren't hard enough already, this year we have almost 70 books to pick from! What is a girl to do? Crack open the books, I guess!

Barnum's Bones
written by Tracey Fern
illustrated by Boris Kulikov

Looking at Bones, mixed media
I loved books about dinosaurs when I was younger - it's a subject that's not just for boys! Barnum's Bones would have been one that my little girl self would have enjoyed. It's all about Barnum Brown, the bone and fossil collector, who discovered his "favorite child," T.rex. He collected bones for the American Museum of Natural History, bringing their collection of dinosaurs from non-existent to the largest collection in the world! Barnum was quite an eccentric and would go prospecting in the desert dressed in suits and occasionally, fur coats. Boris Kulikov's delightful mixed media illustrations capture the excitement of first time discovery and make you feel like you're right there with Barnum and his "favorite child."

Each Kindness
written by Jacqueline Woodson
illustrated by E.B. Lewis

Jumprope, watercolor
The notion that any act of kindness, big or small, can impact the world and make it a better place is a pretty big concept, even for adults. That's why I love Each Kindness, a children's book that doesn't shy away from this lesson and instead shares it with grace and eloquence. E.B. Lewis makes the idea relateable to all ages with his wonderful watercolor illustrations. Instead of the happy ending you might expect out of a children's book, Each Kindness grants us an ending that is sad and cautionary, reminding us that to be kind to others is one of the greatest gifts we can give and one that we should give with unabandoned generosity.

Thumbelina
written by Haans Christian Andersen
illustrated by Sylvia Long

Thumbelina in the Mole Hole, watercolor
For all classic fairy tale lovers, Sylvia Long's version of Thumbelina is simply enchanting! Thumbelina is a tiny, thumb-sized girl who is destined for huge adventures. She meets many friends like the kind-hearted field mouse who takes her in over the cold winter, and encounters unexpected foe during her journeys, like her neighbor the mole whom she's expected to marry. Thumbelina eventually finds her happily-ever-after with another tiny, thumb-sized boy. Sylvia's beautiful watercolor illustrations perfectly portray the story and lend an extra layer of magic. Each page is full of details that enrich the experience of reading this familiar tale.

The Lonely Book
written by Kate Bernheimer
illustrated by Chris Sheban

Peering Through Bookshelves, watercolor & Prismacolor
Is it any surprise that one of my favorite books this year is about a book? No, didn't think so. The Lonely Book is a wonderful story about a book that's beloved when brand new, but as time goes on and it loses it's shiny luster people read it less and less. The book feels very sad but then a little girl discoveres it and it becomes her favorite. They are eventually separated but find each other once again with the help of a kindly librarian. Chris Sheban's whimsical illustrations convey the wonder of truly connecting with a favorite book and sharing its story with the world.

Mudball
written & illustrated by Matt Tavares

Team Picture, watercolor
When you're the shortest baseball player on your team and no one thinks you'll even hit the ball, much less a home run, what do you do? You step up to bat and prove them all wrong! Mudball places us right in the middle of a down by three, bases loaded, one out left game. All of a sudden, it starts to rain. Not just a drizzle, a regular downpour, turning the playing field into mud. Set in the early 1900's, Matt Tavares' sepia-toned watercolors capture the time period and atmosphere of that rainy day to perfection. And, did you notice that Matt is the author and illustrator? Now that's what I call talent!

Which books are your favorites? You still have a few weeks to decide, until close of business November 24th to be exact! Check out this year's Book List, complete with age ranges and pricing, or come on in if you need help choosing.

While you're browsing the books, don't forget to preview the original illustrations, both on our website and in person.

See you soon!

Clients who purchase illustrations will be invited to a private evening with the illustrators.

Boris Kulikov
Returning to Chemers Gallery for a second time, Boris' illustrations really capture the imagination. His bold colors and exaggerated perspectives work hand in hand to bring the stories to life. A graduate of The Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinema in St. Petersburg, Russia, Boris delights with a mixture of watercolor, gouache, pen & ink and pencil on highly textured paper. Boris won the Sydney Taylor Honor for The Castle on Hester Street and has had several books chosen as "Best Books of the Year."

E.B. Lewis
Sensitive, gestural watercolors are the cornerstone of the work of E.B. Lewis. The winner of both the Coretta Scott King award and a Caldecott Honor, E.B. has over 50 books to his credit with more to come. He began to study art in 6th grade at the influence of two artist uncles and later attended Temple University Tyler School of Art. His masterful watercolor illustrations portray stories of both cultural and historical significance.

Sylvia Long
An avid observer of nature with a keen eye for detail, Sylvia brings us brightly hued watercolors with a strong natural theme. In another lifetime, she wanted to become a veterinarian, but later discovered her true love in illustrating children's books. Her books have been chosen by Scholastic as part of the "Top 100 Children's Books of All Time."  Sylvia's vibrant watercolors sparkle with life and charm.

Chris Sheban
Chris's humorous watercolor & Prismacolor illustrations simply leap off the page! He has illustrated numerous books and book covers including Because of Winn Dixie. His process of layering color and medium lends a velvety texture that shows off the details of his work to a tee. With talent like that, is it any wonder he's won multiple gold and silver medals from the Society of Illustrators?!

Matt Tavares
Engaging us with graphite, watercolor and gouache, Matt has a style distinctly his own.  His first book, Zachary's Ball, began as a senior thesis project at Bates College, and later went on to win awards and honors, including an Oppenheim Gold Seal Award. Matt's subtle detailing works wonders in his many baseball and biographical books - you just have to see his work in person to catch every nuance!

Every year, the Children's Book Illustration Show benefits a local children's charity. This year, Chemers Gallery has again chosen to work with...

The Wooden Floor's mission is to empower low-income youth from diverse backgrounds to strengthen self-esteem, self-discipline and a sense of accomplishment through dance, academic and family programs. Since 2005, they are pround that 100% of their young artists graduate from high school on time and go on to pursue higher education. This is about 3 times the national average for their socio-economic peers.
