26. 366 Books – March Update

This is my third month of my year long self-challenge to read a book a day – that is 366 books in 366 days, to celebrate the National year of Reading. I must confess that having started strongly in January, and keeping up to target in February, march saw a bit of a slide, and although I’m not yet up to the April report, things are looking a bit grim. When I set myself the challenge I didn’t

27. Last Stop

Wow. It's been a busy start to the month, with Do Not Forget Australia released on March 1 and , since then, the blog tour taking me all around the blogosphere. Today is the last day in the tour, so if you haven't managed to grab yourself a copy of the book, pop over to Lorraine's blog where you could win yourself a copy. And, if you want to go back and catch up on the rest of the tour, the

28. A Visit from Tania

I'm happy today to welcome Tania McCartney to my blog, here to talk about her excellent new book Australian Story. Over to you, Tania. I adore non-fiction books. Always have. And I’m particularly obsessed with history books . . . anything from fat, scantily-fonted tomes on Julius Caesar through to Horrible Histories laugh-fests for 8- to 12-year-olds. I love them all – and, having studied

31. 366 Books February Update

Two months into the National Year of Reading, means two months down in my attempt to read 366 books this year. That means it must also be time for an update. So 31 days in January, 29 days in February means, by now, I should have read 60 books. And guess what – that’s exactly where I’m at! On target to get to 366 books. These are the books I read in February: 34 Come Down, Cat Sonya

32. A New Book!

Happy happy day! I am really thrilled, excited, delighted, happy and ecstatic to announce that today marks the release of my new book baby, Do Not Forget Australia, published by Walker Books and illustrated by the extraordinarily talented Sonia Kretchsmar.  I was lucky enough to speak at the Perth Writer's Festival on the weekend, and got the chance to share Do Not Forget Australia with

33. Recognition - and What It Means

Time for Meg, Anna and I to once again ruminate on a single topic across our three different blogs. If you've been hiding under a rock these past three weeks - or just simply haven't had time to check out our blogs - each week we've been each blogging on our individual blogs on the same topic, and then discussing the similarities and differences in our approaches. Today's topic is, quite

34. Win Head Hog

I still smile whenever I see the cover of Head Hog which, if you haven't been following here, was released late last year. Illustrator Ben Wood did a fabulous job of the illustrations and the finished product is very cute. If you've not yet had a chance to read the book, this could  your lucky week, because all this week, Kids Book Review (KBR) are running a giveaway. All you have to do is

35. Being Edited - and Living to Tell the Tale

Last week, I got together with the awesome Meg McKinlay and Anna Branford to discuss what it was like to be reviewed. This week we're doing the same thing - three of us posting on the same topic each on our blogs - except on a different topic. This week's topic is what it's like to be edited. I'm going to say two things at the outset. One is that for many aspiring writers, the term editing is

36. Things that made me smile this morning

Things that made me smile this gorgeous February morning: The tousleheadedness of assorted Murphlets as they came out of their rooms after I woke them. Some mornings this worries me (how will we ever get it tidy in time for school), but this morning it just reminded me of when they were little. Seeing a pod of dolphins just off shore when I walked along the beach. I love dolphins. Working out a

37. Happy Dancing with My Pearl

I am drinking a glass of virtual bubbles tonight! I am really excited to announce that Pearl Verses the World has been honoured in the USA, as a Capitol Choices Noteworthy Book for Teens.  You can see the listing here, and also read more about the Capitol Choices lists. And, while we're on the subject of Pearl, the stage adaptation of the book is going to running in Canberra from May 18. I was

38. When the Reviewer Gets Reviewed

I’ve been reviewing books for more than ten years, mainly for my own book review site, aussiereviews. I love sharing the word about books with readers and, along the way, promoting the work of wonderful Australian creators and publishers. But it wasn’t until my own books were published and, subsequently, reviewed that I understood the impact of a review. Reviews are important, in my opinion, for

40. Things that made me smile this morning

Another glorious Monday morning in Murphy-world. Things that made me smile this morning: One. Waking up with the knowledge that my beloved is here with me for another week, instead of 300km away like he usually is on Mondays. Two. Diving into my pool and swimming a dozen laps of butterfly (it is not a big pool). At the start of the summer I could manage about 5. Three. Swimming along the

41. 366 Books - First Update

It's 20 days since I woke up on New Years Day and decided (a little impulsively) to set myself a challenge - to read 366 books this year (you can read my initial post on this here). So I thought it might be time for an update. So far, I'm right on track - I've managed 20 books in 20 days. This is my list so far: 1. Straight Line to My Heart Bill Condon Allen & Unwin Young

42. Busy Week

I'm having a busy week (who am I kidding? Every week is a busy week) but just wanted to share a couple of exciting happenings. Firstly, on Sunday the new-look Aussiereviews went live. I've been running the site for over ten years, focusing on reviewing Australian books, and the site was well overdue for an overhaul. My lovely daughter did the new design, and I spent quite a bit of time

46. 366 Books in 366 Days

Happy New Year to you!  I had a pretty awesome 2011 but am really excited about the promise of a brand new year and loving that 2012 is the National Year of Reading. Also really excited about my role as local ambassador for Bunbury, WA. I had toyed with the idea of a reading meme for the National Year of Reading, but there are so many other really good ones already that I hesitated to add

It's almost Christmas Eve. Few people are unfamiliar with this poem - but having it read by voice over artists is a bit different.

Modern kids might know about The  Chipmunks - but not to many of them know mcuh about viny records and the fun you could have speeding them up. Oh the simpler things in life! I LOVED the Chipmunks in their orginal form.
