26. Epic Mickey

This is one of the last pieces I did when I was at Disney. It was for the game Epic Mickey. I've never played the game and I have no idea if it made it in. Anyone else played it? Is it any good?

27. Mt. Batwing

This morning I was going through some early art for Hero's and laughed at some of my attempts. It's amazing what a process art can be.

For instance...

I was supposed to draw the witch's fortress. I sat down to work on it around 11 pm. By 4 am when I went to bed I thought I had come up with something cool. I still think it's cool, it was just reeeally off the mark from what the publishers were looking for.

I learned a lot in working on this book. One of the most important is to read the instructions! Sometimes I get an image in my head and just jump in without making sure I'm doing the piece correctly.

One of the dangers of having a wild imagination is that you might need to hire someone to help you reign it in...

28. Woohoo!! It's out today!

Buy 10 copies today! And 10 tomorrow! (I don't get royalties, but I still think you should give one to everyone you know)   Christopher Healy wrote a great story and I am stoked I got to be part of it.  It was a super fun project and now while you start reading book one, I'll keep working on book two.

29. Linkage

Here's a dorky interview I did for Hero's Guide. http://abackwardsstory.blogspot.com/2012/04/ftf-interview-todd-harris-illustrator.html

You can also listen to the first few pages of the book there.

31. Hero's Guide Art

Here is some art from a book I illustrated, The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom. It will be in stores on May 1st. It was tons of fun to bring such a great story alive visually.

It's about some fairy tale characters that get mixed up in an adventure together after the "happily ever after."

Singing Bard.

Ella (short for Cinderella)

Frederick.

32. D&D 4

This is an elf smashing a cultist in the face. One thing that is sometimes hard for me is posing characters. These cards were a good challenge for me in helping to improve that weakness.

33. D&D 3

Here's another D&D card. This depicts a paladin offering to protect a wealthy merchant.

Another dwarf, another shady deal, another D&D card.

35. Lords of Waterdeep Art

I did a couple pieces for a new D&D game. This one shows a shady deal going down with a female dwarf and a dude. The art was used for cards in the game.

36. Train Sketches

My car died. This means I spend a lot of time on public transportation. The p.t. system in Los Angeles is an experience. I see some crazy things on the buses and trains of this city and I always feel like I need to take a shower when I get home.

I am so busy at work that I never have time to sketch or figure draw anymore. For this reason I have come to love riding the bus. I draw my fellow commuters.

Most of the time I like to draw the hero in them, bring our their noblest traits.

But not always....

37. Winged Victory

I found this in my sketch book. I drew it when I was in Paris a couple years ago. I'm not sure I could ever do the original justice. It's truly one of the most magestic things I've ever seen.

In college my emphasis was sculpture. Seeing this made me want to start sculpting again.

I just realized that in my last post I uploaded an unfinished version of the piece. It's been updated now.

38. D&D Cards

Last fall I did some art for Wizards of the Coast making some cards for a Dungeons and Dragons card set.  I got two boxes of cards in the mail today. I've opened one box so far looking for my art. No luck. I feel like I'm in Willy Wonka looking for the Golden Ticket.

Hopefully I'll find it eventually. Anyway, here's the art I did for this set. The character is Belgos.

And here's a preliminary sketch.

Gotta go open some more card sets now...

39. Book of Creation

Have you heard of Book of Creation? It's a new publication that showcases artists worldwide. They just released their 2nd issue and included my work in it.

YOW!!

Here's a link to see more about it. The book is cool - full of many wonderful artists.

Here's a quote from the book that supposedly came from me. It's about trends. I'm not really sure what it says since I don't speak French. I barely speak English.

I think it says this:

I like to apply rich color to complex compositions inspired by art nouveau and other styles. I love to inject the illusion of reality into fantasy. I also love to add a strong narration to my work and I'm interested in other artists who do the same.

40. Hero's Guide

This is what I've been working on (in my spare time) the last six months. I'm illustrating this novel for tweeners. It's a cool story written by Christopher Healy. It's been a blast. It will be released next May. I can't wait to let you all experience the story and illustrations. The characters are all so well written and there's a lot of humor, making it very fun for me, as the artist, to work on.

In addition to the four characters and dragon on the front cover, the back cover has four different characters, a castle, a giant and a witch. I started looking around at other book covers recently. Even the most popular books have pretty simple covers. This is quite possibly the most figures EVER assembled on the cover of one book. Lucky for me I love drawing these guys!

Here's the Good Reads link.

Also, the author writes a cool blog about grown ups who like childish things. Chekkit here.

Oh, and one of my favorite things about this book is that the princesses are just as, if not more, heroic than the princes. I love a good, strong female character!

41. Jabberwocky Cinematic

Jabberwocky - Game Cinematic (unreleased)

This is a cinematic for a video game that I pitched at the studio I used to work for. It was fun coming up with the characters and story. Unfortunately the game has been shelved. I have been hesitant to post this, but it's all over the web now so I may as well, right? Perhaps some day it will see the light of day again. I hope it will. I loved working on it.

42. League of Legends Champions

This is just a work in progress. I may get to the color. Someday. After the other 70 billion things are off my plate.

Nevermind. I won't.

43. Unslakeable Process

These are the sketches I provided to the art director for The Unslakeable. This lover of dark magic didn't have nearly enough melted skin, so I had to fix that for the final.

44. D&D Project

ELF ZOMBIE! Pure brilliance!! This is a commissioned piece for a Dungeons & Dragons article. It's called The Unslakeable. She has been using dark magic and evidently it's bad for her complexion; it makes her skin melt away.

If you think about it, there are some similarities between elves and zombies. Elves are immortal. Zombies can't die because they're already dead. Also, both are overrepresented at Comic Con.

Anyway, we can't always have this kind of hybrid fantasy creature, so I need to know....zombies or elves? Which is cooler?

You can read the article here.

45. Old Skool

I have been doing tons of cool stuff lately, but, unfortunately, I can't post any of it on here while it's still in the production phase. Therefore, most of what I post is old. It's fun to dig it back up and see what my brain was coming up with years ago. Like this.

47. Male Figure

Someone requested more figure drawings. Here you go, MN.

When I drew this dude there were a couple elements that combined to give him a heroic look - the strange lighting on his shoulders and head, as well as the low perspective I drew him from.

I really love figure drawing. I wish I had more time to do it these days.
