Archie Comics and Dark Horse Comics are partnering together for a crossover project called Archie Meets Predator. The two companies made this announcement at New York Comic Con.
Writer Alex de Campi will pen the story. Artist Fernando Ruiz will create the illustrations. A publication date has been scheduled for Spring 2015.
Here’s more from the press release: “Archie and friends hit Costa Rica for spring break, where party and beach games soon get replaced by the most dangerous game! What mysterious attraction does the gang hold for the trophy-collecting Predator, and will the kids even realize they’re in danger before it claims them all?”
Oh, and they are spreading the lurv out-and-about the greater metropolitan area, with the inaugural “New York Super Week“, held October 3-12, 2014.
It’s a brilliant marketing move. Javits can only hold so many people (I’m guessing 150K max during NYCC), and can only sell so many tickets. This expands the geekery to the general populace, with many free events available!
What’s available, you ask?
Well… there’s Neil Gaiman teaming up with NPR at the Y! (Buy now, before he announces it on his blog!)
Columbia University displaying comics treasures from their collections! (Free!)
Thrilling Adventure Hour (already sold out! but there’s a workshop!)
Marvel has partnered with Feld Entertainment, a production company, to conceive and develop the “Marvel Universe LIVE!” arena show. Marvel made the announcement at New York Comic Con.
The traveling show will kick off in July 2014, complete with pyrotechnics and martial arts performances. The video embedded above features a teaser trailer–what do you think? Here’s more from the press release:
“Marvel Universe LIVE! will bring Marvel’s most iconic heroes and fearsome villains to life like never before during a live-action arena spectacular that will tour 85 North American cities in its first two years. Officially kicking off in July 2014, Marvel Universe LIVE! will redefine the live show experience by integrating a Marvel character driven story with state-of-the-art special effects, pyrotechnics, aerial stunts, martial arts and countless other show elements.”
Stoker Award-winning writerJonathan Maberry has landed a deal with Dark Horse Comics for five-issue mini-series, Bad Blood.
Tyler Crook, an Eisner Award winner, will do the artwork. The announcement, made during New York Comic Con, revealed that the first installment will be released on January 01, 2014. Maberry gave this statement in the press release:
Bad Blood tells the story of Trick, a teenage slacker on the losing side of a fight with cancer. When he’s attacked by a vampire, he figures it’s game over. Except that the chemo drugs in Trick’s blood poison the vampire. As punishment, the vampires begin slaughtering everyone Trick loves. So he goes hunting for the vamps to try to destroy them.
While I plan to do a big post detailing my experience of interning for Vertical at New York Comic Con, I thought I should do a small one detailing some of my thoughts and expectations on the subject. I have never worked for a company at a convention before, nor have I ever have been at con volunteer, however, I used to work in conjunction with New York Comic Con (and at the time, New York Anime Festival) at various events around the city. So I’m familiar with interacting with the lovely con masses. This time, I’ll be working as an exhibitor and as a member of the industry. Definitely intriguing, if not a little scary, to think about.
As you probably have heard by now, and should know if you’ve kept up with the blog (please do this, I’d appreciate it ) we’re bringing out josei superstar and Sakuran author Moyoco Anno, and I’m really proud to be working with the company that’s doing this. I don’t know if I’ll get to meet her myself, but I’m still very excited for it to be happening! I’m also excited to be working at the booth. I’ve done booth duty for NYCC/NYAF at other events, and I’m really stoked on getting to do it for Vertical. I implore you to come and say hi, and if you feel like it to pick up a new release or two as well! I think it will be a lot of fun meeting and talking with other fans of the titles we put out, maybe get into a debate over which Tezuka title reins supreme, and simply just soak in the experience from a different perspective than I’ve ever done before.
Again, we’re doing a lot at NYCC this year. As always, we’ll be having a panel, Moyoco Anno will be having her own panel and several autograph signings, and we’ll have plenty of books to sell! Come check everything out, at New York Comic-Con.

Former Marvel Comics editor Andy Schmidt moderated a New York Comic Con panel on writing and story structure earlier this month.
The group of panelists included writers Jimmy Palmiotti, Daniel Way and David Hine. Based on the discussion, we created a list of do’s and don’ts for story structure.
Do create an outline for your story.
Don’t treat your outline as a strict, controlling template. These tools are meant to enhance, not stifle, creativity.
The legendary Stan Lee has teamed up with publisher 1821 Comics to launch a new multi-platform imprint for children called “Stan Lee’s Kids Universe.”
At the New York Comic Con presentation, Lee (pictured with Terry Douglas) explained: “Our main purpose is we feel that there aren’t enough comic books or books for kids that really hit the target, that gives them excitement and humor together and are filled with surprises. We have a whole new group of new characters that the kids can call their own, just as the teenagers called Spider-Man their own so many years ago.”
The imprint’s inaugural list consists of six projects; five books and an interactive game for the iPhone and iPad. The first two books, Monsters vs. Kittens and Once Upon a Time, were both created by Dani Jones and they will be released in Spring 2012.

Not long ago, if you were past a certain age range — say, puberty — it was arguably "uncool" to be obsessed with comic books, villains and superheroes. But times have changed: close to 100,000 people converged on New York City's... Read the rest of this post
At a culinary Manga panel during New York City Comic Con, panelists discussed the wine-centered comic, Drops of God. The storyline centers around wine culture, including everything from vintage to mannerisms. All the wines featured are real.
The popular Manga series propelled the Japanese sales of one particular bottle, the Bordeaux region’s Château le Puy. The owner Jean-Pierre Amoreau was surprised and delighted from the big bump in business. Then, he decided to take the wine off the market.
The Guardian reports on Amoreau’s decision: “We immediately withdrew this vintage from sale through our agents across the world in order to avoid speculation because we wanted this wine, which had been chosen as a mythical wine, to remain within reach of everyone.” continued…
At New York Comic Con, it’s hard to make your comic book stand out in a sea of content. Comic creators try everything to get your attention, employing loud music, models, and costumed superheros.
Last weekend, we caught up with the creators of the Dark Age trilogy, a comic book set in a ruined future. For Comic Con, the team stuck their first issue inside a Class III biohazard safety cabinet, complete with rubber gloves and bullets. Watch the video embedded above to see the eye-catching display. What is the best book display you’ve ever seen at a comic convention or book expo? Share your thoughts in the comments for a future post.
Here’s more from a Wired profile of the artists: “Graphic-designing twin brothers Nick and Adam Hayes are best known for creating Sony’s PlayStation font and slick ads for Marc Ecko. But as comics avatars Mada and Vin Shaye, they’ve crafted the oppressively dystopian graphic novel series Dark Age. [It begins in a] war-torn future, which takes place on a dead planet in free fall. But the duo’s artistic and typographic innovation is evident, given the graphic novel’s six original typefaces and more than 760 illustrations.”

Top Cow Productions created “Pilot Season” to let readers vote on five brand new comic book concepts. The winning titles get the green light for publication.
At a New York Comic Con panel, publisher Filip Sablik outlined the program. Last year’s “Pilot Season” winners were Twilight Guardian and Genius. This year’s titles included: 39 Minutes, @sset, Forever, Crosshair, and 7 Days in Hell. Three out of five titles have been optioned for film adaptations.
The panel highlighted the Top Cow publication, Rest. The comic explores the consequences of a drug that allows people to stop sleeping. Actor Milo Ventimiglia acts as “editor/producer” for Rest and encouraged panel attendees to really show their support for independent comic book publishers.
At New York City Comic Con yesterday, this GalleyCat editor spent some time paging through Hermes Press‘ reprints of classic newspaper comic strips.
While we explored strips like Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and The Phantom, publisher Daniel Herman explained why he resurrected these long-forgotten comics. He also expounded on how the vampire television show Dark Shadows influenced contemporary popular culture.
Watch the video embedded above for a brief tribute to the fading art of newspaper comics and a peek at some of the best costumes at New York City Comic Con. For more comic book action, check out our New York Comic Con tag.
