I flew into Miami in late September 2010. I had a little break at home after LA and Phoenix and then the long haul began. I arrived late at night to a nearly empty and VERY BIG Miami Airport. Walking from our gate, (I think we might have actually landed in Georgia) took about 20 minutes. Maybe I was just tired. Anyway, along the way there were some very nice art installations. I always think that you should look at the stuff that gets put into the airports. I’ve talked about that before. Cool Art and other goings on in Airports.
Here’s what I saw:
Okay so the last one was just an empty Courtesy Shuttle. Would have been nice back at the arrival gate in Georgia. I love the Hot-Pink! The whole time in Miami I felt like I was in Costa Rica Light. I mean Latin flavor but everyone was speaking English. It was so nice and made me a little homesick for Costa Rica.
Made it late to a gorgeous hotel in Miami Beach – on the ocean. Luxury. It was a long trip. The next morning I would have to be up early for school visits. More on that later.

American Gods author Neil Gaiman and musician Amanda Palmer raised more than $80,000 for a five-show tour on the North American west coast. Above, we’ve embedded a video about the project.
The literary duo tried to raise $20,000 on Kickstarter to fund the recording costs and merchandise production. However, within forty-eight hours they raised $70,000. Currently, they have more than $85,000 in pledged funds. Every backer who submitted $1 or more will receive a digital recording of the show.
Here’s more about the show: “we’ll have a piano, a ukulele, and maybe some other weird instruments, as well as some unpublished and uncollected Neil Gaiman stories and poems. we’ll both probably switch up what we’re presenting from night to night. we’ll be taking questions from the audience, chat-style, and trying to do special things in each venue, busting out a few surprises, and more or less trying to feel like we’ve connected with you…” What do you think?

In an effort to raise money for Japanese earthquake relief, singer Justin Bieber sent a lock of his hair on tour and fans around the country have paid $1 to take a picture with it. Mimicking the young pop star, author David Thorne has sent a lock of his own hair on a bookstore tour.
Thorne’s editor, Michael Solana, explained in the release: “Thorne declared war on Justin Bieber last month with his site HelpMeSellMoreBooksThanJustinBieber.com. A 10-city tour of his hair was kind of inevitable.”
Thorne’s hair will spend three days in each store. For every location that hosts the Thorne lock, Penguin Group (USA)’s Tarcher/Penguin will donate $200 to the National Children’s Cancer Society.

I am back home again after completing my BFNBT#2. I had a wonderful time and was hosted by some very wonderful folks with wonderful book stores and schools across the country. I am exhausted, but happy to have had such a great time. I took a few photos and will share some of the journey (and the end of last years tour that is still ongoing in the time machine) soon.
For now I will say that the highlight was getting to see my parents and bring them to an event where they got to see what it is I do now. They were just amazed I was in the paper in an ad (for the wonderful Vero Beach Book Center) right next to Harlan Coben! Trust me, they aren’t easy to impress and that seemed to do the trick.
Thanks everyone. Now on to the ignored: laundry, school stuff, and my babies.

Congratulations to Melanie Mitchell, who received the 2010 ΦBK Science Book Award for her book Complexity: A Guided Tour! In honor of this, Michelle and Lauren talk with Mitchell about ants, robots, the economy, and more.
Melanie Mitchell is Professor of Computer Science at Portland State University and External Professor and Member of the Science Board at the Santa Fe Institute. Her research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning and complex systems.

From the Phi Beta Kappa Society:
Amazing feats of collective intelligence, such as the colony of army ants that link themselves together to cross daunting precipices, are having an unconventional effect on the future of science. The “complexity” of these naturally occurring events cannot be explained by the traditional method of breaking science down into its most basic parts, in this case, the individual army ants. Instead, the study of complex systems, those made up of simple components with limited capacity for communication, provide a much broader illustration of the science of self-organization and adaptation.
In Complexity: A Guided Tour (Oxford University Press, 2009), Melanie Mitchell draws on her background as a computer scientist and her work with the Santa Fe Institute to study the complex systems that have evolved in nature and how they may contribute to the future of computer programming, specifically with regards to artificial intelligence. Mitchell also looks at the human brain’s ability to create consciousness from a complex network of electrically charged neurons, axons, and dendrites, as well as the immune system’s unique collection of cells, which work together in an effective and efficient way without any central control.

Business first:
Copperfield Books in Petaluma tonight at 7!
And then. I hook back up with Cassandra Clare and we'll appear in Cincinnati Friday and Saturday.
Then Cassie and I will meet Elizabeth Scott in NYC Sunday, and Cassie and I will do a final library event on Monday.
Tour details here.
In other very important news, I have acquired a friend.
It was in the wee hours of Sunday night that I had a hankering for the world's most perfect food: peanut butter. I was delighted to have a Walgreen's across from the hotel, so I scouted around and to my delight, I found a jar of creamy JIF, my favorite. Bought it and back in my hotel room, I opened it up.
It smelled delicious.
And then.
I realized I didn't have anything in the room with which to eat it. And so I did what all teen authors would do: I tweeted about it.
Meanwhile, I had called room service for ice, and when it arrived, there it was.
A spoon.
Yay!
All was good in the world.
The next morning, as I packed up for my school visits, I realized that if I left the spoon in the room, housekeeping would take it. And then I would have tragedy in my life once again.
Well, so, I borrowed the spoon, and it traveled with me to school. Of course I tweeted and someone asked me what I'd named her (because she is obviously female).
"Miss Spoobin."
That's what I said. And that is her name.
After that, I got another spoon with room service, and then another and another. I began to hoard them. I have a slight problem, I know.
Can you tell which one is Miss Spoobin? She glows just slightly, of course.
On my travels, I realized just how lonely I was getting because I began showing Miss Spoobin to my new friends. We took photos.
Have you ever heard of the Flat Stanley Project?
This is kind of like that. My friend Daniel sent me his Flat Stanley a few years ago. We took him to pan for gold.
I digress.
Here are some places Miss Spoobin has been, besides the peanut butter jar.
Deer Valley High School:
With radio station host Jim Foster:
Lunch with my friends (who brought me wonderful little individual cups of my fave pb so I can carry them in my purse):
At Clayton Books:
Capuchino High School with Books, Inc. and the You Say Read, We Say Party Book Club:
To my friends in Cincinnati and NYC who want a photo with Miss Spoobin, well, I don't have an answer for you yet as to whether she will be accompanying me. I am not a thief (not anymore, anyway), so I will find the manager of the hotel and ask if I might purchase Miss Spoobin.
Wish me luck.
UPDATE:
Hotel manager David just said I can keep Miss Spoobin! Yay, I love David!

BRIEFLY: I had a BLAST in an exhausting collage of faces and places starting with Atlanta, Kennesaw (curriculum mixes drama and storytelling) with Irish teller Eddie Lenihan. Then up through the Smokey Mountains: Cleveland, Knoxville, and Jonesborough (SUCH A LITTLE TOWN!) Connie Gil hosted me. Met with NSN (Bobbie) and ISC (Susan/ Jimmy Neil) about a national story radio show. I did a workshop & tell there, then did lotsa ghost tours with my daughter in Savannah, and caught my breath at her house in Jacksonville, Florida. Then a wonderfully intense long weekend at the Florida Storytelling Camp and home on one of the last ATA flights. (more…)
Leg 2 of the Pigeon tour starts this week. Please note updates to this weekends appearances at NY's Comic Con and my Vancouver event the following week. I hope to see ya there.
Big crowds, long flights. Best story; a girl dressed up as Trixie and made her dad dress up as the 2:30am dad for her birthday party. Cool. I'm in FL today; drop by if you're in the area.. Here's a nice article relating to my Dallas appearance.
