51. A is for Ava

Lately we have been enjoying all things ABC! Ava has taken an interest in pointing out letters (and numbers) and to my great pleasure she has begun recognizing several with frequency. One of her favorite toys at home is the magnetic alphabet letters. The set we have has the chunky letters and numbers which are perfect for little hands to manipulate. The set also comes with word cards indented to insert the letter for the beginning of each word. We name the image and sometimes spell the words. This activity has spilled over into our reading habits.

There are many, many alphabet books. Some that are excellent and many others that are not. At 20 months we are focusing on alphabet books that prominently feature the letter and one image. While reading we trace the letter and talk about the imagine (this also includes making the appropriate animal sounds). When looking for ABC books for my toddler I am looking for interesting illustrations that lack clutter. The ABC books on our shelf right now are Bruno Munari's ABC, Little Bird's ABC by Piet Grobler, and Eric Carle's ABC.

52. A.B.C.: the first of (hopefully) many

  • A.B.C. = Airport Bookstore Commentary
  • I have visited (and revisited) several bookstores throughout my travels. Mostly in the Denver, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City airports... Anyway, airport bookstores are my favorite type of bookstore in the world (excepting only indie children's bookstores). So I thought I'd share some commentary on each one that I visit.
Bookstore #1: This one's in the Salt Lake City airport. Unfortunately I can't tell you a whole lot about their book selection, browsing comfort, or any of that, because I wasn't able to spend any time in it. It was after I landed in Salt Lake City (earlier this month on the latter part of a trip I took; you know, the one where I met Tony DiTerlizzi in CA?). I was excited to see my cousins and also tired from my long day of traveling, thus I didn't take the time to browse here.

HOWEVER - I simply had to share this bookstore with you, because it boasted a very special feature. Lining the walls above the shelves were some purely brilliant quotes from some of the most famous authors in all of history.

F. Scott Fitzgerald, or, "Fitzy," as I have taken to calling him thanks to Little Willow:
J.K. Rowling:
Stephen King:
J.R.R. Tolkien:
Shakespeare:
Truman Capote:
C.S. Lewis:

Just beautiful!

53. A Isn't for Fox: An Isn't Alphabet, written by Wendy Ulmer and illustrated by Laura Knorr - review

A Isn't for Fox: An Isn't Alphabet, written by Wendy Ulmer and illustrated by Laura Knorr - review

Here's an ABC book with a new angle: each letter gets two rhyming things that it's "not" for... and an animal that it is. This strategy makes the familiar (ants, zebras) feel fresh, and distracts - in a good way - from the awkward (nuthatch, xenops). Laura Knorr's kicky, detailed paintings exude personality and good humor.

G isn't for mugs; it isn't for rugs.
G is for geckos that hide on the rug.
This big fun picture book is perfect to share with a little kid, pointing at the pictures to cue the kid to supply the nouns. The "G" page shows a gecko sitting on a rug drinking from a mug with a bug on it. Between the letter, the repeating framework and the illustrations of each noun, you've got that kid practically reading the whole page. There are very few books that work that way (holla, Ravenous Beast!), and they are to be treasured. Unfortunately, not every page works that way:

L isn't for dramas; it isn't for mamas.
L is for llamas in fuzzy pajamas.
This page shows llamas having a pillowfight. Hey, I'm sympathetic: how do you illustrate llamas having dramas with their mamas? And not have it be all Lifetime movie-of-the-week? So this one the kid can't help with.

I really respect Laura Knorr's work here: she works in as many of the rhyming words as she can, and her range is spectacular. Yaks and fairies are rendered with equal skill and charm. It's just a shame that the team that produced this book couldn't support that collaborative reading process on every page.

54. NASCAR ABCs by Paul DuBois Jacobs, Jennifer Swender, illustrated by Aaron Zenz - review

NASCAR ABCs by Paul DuBois Jacobs, Jennifer Swender, illustrated by Aaron Zenz

Here's one that's been a long time coming. And it's really pretty great. The word choice is good, especially around the problem letters (Q is for Qualify, X is for X-factor, and Z of course is for Zooming); the rhymes are fine; and the collage-y illustrations are bright. There are some minor issues with page layout: the big "F" overlays the hauler instead of the flags, for example, but nothing to prevent a young race fan from carrying this book home and enjoying it.

Bonus for parents who don't actually follow NASCAR: a glossary at the back!

55. E is for Eat

This is my latest illustration in my weekly children's book project I've been working on, titled Robot Alphabet. This is letter E, for Robots Eat. This is actually based on a classic poster from the mid-20th century (the original of which can be seen here). As always, if you're interested in keeping tabs on my progress, you can find my regulary updated blog here. Also, here is a link to my other portfolio site.

56. D is for Dive

If anybody's been following along with my weekly robot ABC book project, you might have noticed that I missed posting what should have been the letter D last week. That's because my entire family (myself included) was hit by one nasty case of the flu. Well, I'm back from death's door, and this is what would have been week four: Robots Dive. You can check out the rest of my progress at my blog, Robot Alphabet. You can also always check out other work I've done and other news-worthy events at my portfolio site/blog: Mark Hammer Designs.

57. Robots Cook!

Well, here we are again. This week’s addition to my weekly ABC book project is C is for Cook. I had some debate with my wife on what sort of cook I should be doing. I even briefly flirted with the idea of changing the letter C to Chop and doing a robot sushi chef, but then I started thinking about depicting “hey, kids, it’s fun to play with knives," and decided it was best to return to my original idea. As always, I invite you to check out my regularly updated blog Robot Alphabet to track my progress on my book. You can also check out my portfolio site and other blog here.

59. V is for Ventress

2147588234_2ab2286182_o.jpg

I know - not from the films! But where would your Star Wars ABC education be without a Sith?

Straight from Dermot Power's concept art, to the Clone Wars, I'd say Asajj Ventress is pretty much a part of Star Wars now.  Perhaps we'll see her in the live action series?

Some other characters, droids, creatures and species that start with V:

Vader, Darth
Valorum, Supreme Chancellor
Vanden Willard
Veers, General Maximillian
Vida, Ayy
Viper Probe Droid

60. Alphabet Soup 1

From an article by Eric Witchey in the September issue of The Writer. He says give your characters ABC – agenda, backstory, and conflict.

He says each character has three agendas:
- An overall agenda, which consists of broad hopes, life goals. (This is the agenda.)
- A scene agenda, which is what they want in any given scene. (This is the conflict.)
- A compulsive agenda, which is a deeper, hidden need. (This is the backstory)

I always have C. And I usually have A and B, but not always both. At least not consciously. What about you?

63. Q is for Quadinaros

1436932570_bcb1a0c392_o.jpg

Don't name your kid after the letter Q in the Star Wars universe - it appears to be a very rare and in Ben Quadinaros'  case - unlucky - letter.  Poor Quadinaros and his faulty Podracer power couplings.  Some day he'll win that trophy!

Some other characters, droids, creatures and species that start with Q:

Quarren

Viewers!  With October coming up (and as most of you know, it's the most important Tweedlebop month of all), I'm putting the Star Wars ABC series on hold until November to deal with work and some special Halloween treats!

72. I is for IG-88

Seen standing among the other bounty hunter scum in Episode V, IG-88 has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid.  Who was this stick like war droid and what could he do with those unbending arms and legs?  In Episode III, we see an early relative of IG-88, the IG-100s, who defend General Grevious aboard the Invisible Hand.  Droids just kick Jedi butt!

I wonder what they're talking about?

Two for one letter!  The GNK Power Droid and Garindan.  The Power Droids ("gonk! gonk!") should be very familiar as they're walking very slowly throughout the saga (they really are everywhere).  And do you ever wonder what if Garindan hadn't snitched on a certain ship in Docking Bay 94?
