26. 2 Actors Join the Cast of ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’

Lemony Snicket Unfortunate Events (GalleyCat)Netflix has added two new members to the cast for the A Series of Unfortunate Events series. Entertainment Weekly reports that Malina Weissman will play Violet Baudelaire and Louis Hynes will play Klaus Baudelaire.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Neil Patrick Harris would take on the role of the antagonist, Count Olaf. The story for this adaptation project comes from a popular middle grade series by Lemony Snicket (a.k.a. Daniel Handler). Altogether, Handler wrote and published a total of thirteen installments.

Here’s more from Deadline: “Narrated by Snicket, A Series Of Unfortunate Events recounts the tale of the orphaned children Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire at the hands of the villainous Count Olaf, as they face trials and tribulations, misfortunes and an evil uncle in search of their fortune, all in their quest to uncover the secret of their parents’ deaths. Violet, the self-confident, capable and smart-beyond-her-years eldest sibling, helps her brother and sister solve problems with her skills as an inventor. 27. Frank Underwood Gets His Hands Dirty in a New House of Cards Trailer

Netflix has unveiled a new promotional piece for the forthcoming season of House of Cards. The video embedded above features the evil Frank Underwood and his right hand man Douglas Stamper.

Here’s more from People Magazine: “Frank and Doug are there for a groundbreaking ceremony, complete with supporters holding Underwood 2016 signs. While that event may seem innocent enough, the creepy music in the background signals that all is not well in the Underwood administration.”

28. Kit Harington to Star in a New Production of Doctor Faustus

Jon Snow - Game of ThronesKit Harington has signed on to star in a new theatrical production of Doctor Faustus. Harington has become well-known for playing Jon Snow on the Game of Thrones HBO series.

Here’s more from The Daily Mail: “Doctor Faustus is about a physician who makes a pact, in blood, with the devil. Lucifer gets the Doctor’s soul. But for 24 years, Faustus gets infinite knowledge and the chance to indulge in any and every fantasy he desires. He becomes well acquainted with the Seven Deadly Sins in the process.”

Deadline reports that the show will open on Apr. 9 at the Duke of York Theatre; this venue can be found in the West End within London. Christopher Marlowe published The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus play back in 1604. 29. Benedict Wong Cast in the Doctor Strange Movie

Doctor Strange Movie (GalleyCat)Benedict Wong has been cast as Wong, a sidekick character, in the Doctor Strange movie. Recently, he was seen on the silver screen in The Martian film adaptation.

Here’s more from The Hollywood Reporter: “Wong, the character, is a Marvel mainstay, having been around since the 1960s. He performs healing duties, assists in occult matters, is knowledgeable in martial arts and tends to Strange’s affairs. Among his functions is to look after Strange’s body when the hero is astral projecting himself into other dimensional planes.”

According to Vulture, some of the other cast members include Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, and Mads Mikkelsen as the primary villain. Marvel Entertainment has set the theatrical release date for Nov. 4. (via Empire Magazine)

30. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show Staged in N.Y.

Rockefeller Productions is hosting a special performance of its upcoming new puppet show adaptation of Eric Carle’s children’s books as a benefit.

The event, which will take place on February 19th at the 47th Street Theatre at 11:00am in New York, will benefit the art and literacy programs at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Massachusetts. The tickets for the benefit cost $75, and include a gift bag, as well as a meeting with a puppet.

The show is based on four of Eric Carle’s stories including: The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse; Mister Seahorse; The Very Lonely Firefly; and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It premiered in January 2015 in Sydney, Australia and is on continuous tour through 2017 in Australia and New Zealand. The show opens in New York on January 30th.

31. Tom Hiddleston Meets a Criminal Mastermind in The Night Manager Trailer

The BBC has unleashed a trailer for The Night Manager television show. According to Indie Wire, the story for this six-part series comes from John Le Carré’s 1993 novel.

The video embedded above offers glimpses of actors as Hugh Laurie as Richard Onslow Roper and Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine. Susanne Bier served as the director for all six episodes. (via The Los Angeles Times)

32. Two New Promo Videos Unveiled For Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Over the weekend, Warner Bros. Pictures unleashed two short promotional pieces for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The video embedded above and below features scenes with Henry Cavill as Superman (a.k.a. Clark Kent) and Ben Affleck as Batman (a.k.a. Bruce Wayne).

Entertainment Weekly reports that Zack Snyder served as the director on this project. The filmmaking team recently introduced a “brand new Twitter emoji for each hero, and in a video posted to Twitter today, Snyder encouraged fans to pick a side on social media by tweeting using the hashtags #Batman or #Superman. (Sadly, there’s no Wonder Woman option.)”

33. Shailene Woodley Faces a Wall in the New Allegiant Trailer

Lionsgate has unleashed a new trailer for the third installment of the Divergent franchise, Allegiant. According to BuzzFeed, this dystopian story comes from the first half of Veronica Roth’s 2013 young adult novel.

The video embedded above offers glimpses of actors Shailene Woodley and Theo James reprising their roles as Beatrice “Tris” Prior and Tobias “Four” Eaton. Entertainment Weekly reports that other returning cast members include Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, and Zoë Kravitz.

34. Neil Patrick Harris to Star in ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ Series

Neil Patrick Harris (GalleyCat)Neil Patrick Harris has been cast in the forthcoming A Series of Unfortunate Events series. In the past, he (pictured, via) has acted in several book-based movies including Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (and its sequel) and Gone Girl.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the story for this Netflix series comes from Daniel Handler’s popular children’s books series. Handler himself will serve as an executive producer. Harris will play the villainous Count Olaf.

35. Kevin Spacey Joins Cast in J.D. Salinger Biopic

Kevin Spacey has been cast in the J.D. Salinger biopic, Rebel in the Rye. In the past, Spacey has acted in several book-based projects including House of Cards, 21 movie, and L.A. Confidential.

Deadline reports that Spacey will play a professor named Whit Burnett who serves as mentor to young Salinger. The movie studio announced last year that Nicholas Hoult will take on the role of Salinger.

According to VarietyDanny Strong, the scribe behind Game Change and The Butler, will serve as both the director and screenwriter.

Strong will adapt Kenneth Slawenski’s biography, J.D. Salinger: A Life, for the script. The story will examine “Salinger as he prepares to write his classic novel, Catcher in the Rye.” (via Empire Magazine)

36. Netflix Unveils Teaser for Orange is the New Black Season 4

Netflix has released the trailer for the fourth season of Orange is the New Black. The story for this show comes from Piper Kerman’s 2011 memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.

The video embedded above features scenes with Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, Kate Mulgrew as Galina “Red” Reznikov, and Uzo Aduba as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren. The 13 new episodes will be made available online on June 17.

37. CBS to Create a Nancy Drew TV Show

Nancy Drew (GalleyCat)CBS has given the greenlight for a Nancy Drew television series. The Atlantic reports that the production team does not plan to stay completely faithful to this popular children’s book series.

In this adaptation, Nancy Drew will be a 30-year-old who works as a detective for the New York Police Department. Glenn Geller, the president of CBS Entertainment, has stated the crew is open to an actress of any ethnicity to play the titular character.

Here’s more from The Hollywood Reporter: “Nancy Drew first appeared in books in 1930 and was originally created by Edward Stratemeyer. The beloved books have been ghostwritten by a series of authors and published under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene. The character has evolved in the decades since, though the original series — Nancy Drew Mystery Stories — ran from 1930 to 2003. The franchise has included spinoff series including Nancy Drew Files and collaborations with the Hardy Boys.”

The CW has unleashed a new extended trailer for The Flash. The video embedded above offers glimpses of Grant Gustin playing the speedster hero.

39. The Revenant Receives 12 Academy Award Nominations

The Revenant, a film adaptation directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, has earned twelve academy Academy Award nominations. John Krasinski, an actor, joined Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, to make the announcement this morning.

The movie, based in part on Michael Punke’s 2015 novel, stars Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role of Hugh Glass. We’ve embedded the official trailer above–what did you think of the film?

40. ABC to Shoot a Pilot for Marvel’s Most Wanted

marvel logoABC has given the greenlight to shoot a pilot for the Marvel’s Most Wanted television show. The story for this Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff would revolve around Barbara “Bobbi” Morse, played by Adrianne Palicki, and Lance Hunter, played by Nick Blood.

Here’s more from Comic Book Resources: “The show, featuring the exploits of Palicki and Blood as on-again, off-again partners in romance and adventure Morse and Hunter, will be executive produced by the Agents S.H.I.E.L.D. team of Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski. No air date has yet been announced.”

At this point in time, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on a midseason break. The eleventh episode of season three will come out on March 8. The premiere episode for Agent Carter season two has not been aired yet. It will be unveiled on Jan. 19. (via Deadline)

Hulu has unleashed a new trailer for 11.22.63. The story for this adaptation series comes from Stephen King’s thriller novel.

The video embedded above offers glimpses of James Franco starring as a time-traveling teacher named Jake Epping. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Franco found his way to the role through his love of the King novel.”

42. Frank Underwood Wants Your Vote in New House of Cards Trailer

Last night, a new trailer for House of Cards season four was aired during the Golden Globe Awards. The video embedded above features the evil Frank Underwood starring in a dramatic presidential campaign ad.

Here’s more from Deadline: “A catalogue of crimes by Underwood over the first three seasons of HoC, the 1-minute spot is the second Season 4 tease in less than a month. On December 15 and with near perfect timing, Netflix put out a fake FU2016 ad during the fifth GOP debate.”

Both the United States and United Kingdom editions of this show were adapted from a political thriller series written by Michael Hobbs.

45. BBC One Reveals a Behind-The-Scenes Video for the Sherlock Special

BBC One has unveiled a video on “Taking Sherlock Back To Victorian Times.” The video embedded above showcases a behind-the-scenes look at the Sherlock: The Abominable Bride special.

Here’s more from The Hollywood Reporter: “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, the much-anticipated 90-minute special of the BBC hit show starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, on Friday drew an average audience of 8.4 million in Great Britain, according to overnight data. That made the drama the day’s most-watched show in the U.K. and amounted to a share of 34.7 percent of people watching TV in the country at the time, according to the BBC.”

46. The Complete Deaths to Detail the 74 Deaths in Shakespeare’s Plays

The Spymonkey production company will put on a show that features the 74 deaths from the plays of William Shakespeare. The Complete Deaths will open at the Royal & Derngate (based in Northampton, United Kingdom) in May 2016.

Here’s more from The Telegraph: “The Complete Deaths will detail all of the Bard’s 74 scripted deaths in one play, from early rapier thrusts to the more elaborate viper-breast-application adopted by Cleopatra. The total makes Shakespeare’s complete works more gory than notorious HBO TV show Game of Thrones, which has scripted 61 deaths in 50 episodes, including the controversial burning of a child at the stake.”

47. Sony to Create a New Animated Spider-Man Film

Marvel's Spider-Man (GalleyCat)Sony will shoot an animated Spider-Man movie. Originally, the release date was scheduled for Jul. 20, 2018 but now, it has been changed to Dec. 21, 2018.

Variety reports that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the filmmakers behind The Lego Movie, will serve as the directors. They will also collaborate on writing the screenplay.

Here’s more from Deadline: “The push comes after the studio earlier this year unveiled its Spider-Man reboot plan with Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal steering the ship of its $4 billion live-action franchise. Under that deal, Spider-Man will appear in his Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War that is part of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and then Sony Pictures will release the next stand-alone installment on July 28, 2017, with Jon Watts directing and Tom Holland as the young Peter Parker.” (via Cinema Blend)

48. Old World Russia Comes to Life in the New War and Peace Trailer

Lifetime has unleashed a new trailer for its War and Peace four-week limited-series. The story for this adaptation comes from Leo Tolstoy’s beloved novel.

The video embedded above features James Norton as Andrei Bolkonsky, Lily James as Natasha Rostov, and Paul Dano as Pierre Bezukhov. Some of the other cast members include Jim Broadbent as Prince Bolkonsky and Gillian Anderson as Anna Pavlovna.

49. Mads Mikkelsen to Play the Villain in the Doctor Strange Movie

Doctor Strange Movie (GalleyCat)Mads Mikkelsen has been cast as the primary antagonist in the Doctor Strange movie. In the past, Mikkelsen has acted in several book-based projects such as King Arthur, The Three Musketeers, and Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.

Vanity Fair reports that Benedict Cumberbatch plays the titular comic book hero; his character is a neurosurgeon-turned-sorcerer. Other cast members include Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios and a producer on Doctor Strange, sat for a conversation with Entertainment Weekly and explained that “Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect. [He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through.” Marvel Entertainment has set the theatrical release date for Nov. 04, 2016. 50. Deadpool Mouths Off in a New Movie Trailer

20th Century Fox unleashed a new trailer for the Deadpool film adaptation to conclude the “12 Days of Deadpool” promotional campaign.  The studio created two versions of this second trailer: a red band edition and a green band edition.

The video embedded above features Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool (a.k.a. Wade Wilson) and Morena Baccarin as Copycat (a.k.a. Vanessa Carlysle). Some of the other cast members include T. J. Miller, Ed Skrein, and Gina Carano.
