27. Miss Snark Retiring!

Bookseller Chick has thoughts on the issue.

My thoughts run somewhere along the line of, "NO! No no no no no! No no! No no no... yes? I mean, NO!"

Now we need a new book agent blog to follow. Shoot. Any suggestions?

29. Obituary: Lloyd Alexander

From the child_lit listserv:

Dear Community,

There is sad news. Lloyd Alexander died this morning. He was under Hospice care and was at home in his own bed where he wanted to be.

His wife, Janine, to whom he was married for sixty-two years, died two weeks ago - also at home. (He met and married the French Janine in Paris at the end of WWII.)

His last book, THE GOLDEN DREAM OF CARLO CHUCHIO is out in galley form. Holt publication date is August. It is vintage Alexander.

Lloyd said about CARLO, "I have finished my life work."
For more information check out SFScope. Also, Roger Sutton has linked to a rather charming letter from the Horn Book vaults here.

32. Caldecott Honor Winner Dies

From the New York Times:

Mr. Low’s playful graphic style lent itself to children’s picture books, which from the late ’50s to nearly the end of his life made up a large portion of his output. “Mice Twice,” about a cat that invites a mouse to dinner and is surprised by the guest the mouse brings along, was named a Caldecott honor book in 1981. He also illustrated more than a dozen other books, including “Aesop: L’Estrange” (1964), “A Learical Lexicon: From the Works of Edward Lear” (1966), “There Was a Wise Crow” (1973), “Boo to a Goose” (1975), “The Christmas Grump” (1977), “A Mad Wet Hen and Other Riddles” (1992), and “Beastly Riddles” (1993).
