27. PaperTigers’ Global Voices: The Canadian Children’s Book Centre

The Canadian Children’s Book Centre Presents: The Art of the Picture Book Exhibition ~ by Holly Kent, Sales and Marketing Manager, The Canadian Children’s Book Centre

(Part 3 of 3. Read Part 1 “The Canadian Children’s Book Centre Presents TD Canadian Children’s Book Week” here and Part 2 “The Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s TD Grade One Book Giveaway Program”  here.)

It is through the support of generous sponsors, donations, and our members and subscribers that the Canadian Children’s Book Centre is able to run its many programs. We also hold fundraising events – one of the most exciting being The Art of the Picture Book Exhibition and Auction.

Over 80 original illustrations from Canadian picture books will be on exhibit at the world-famous Montreal Museum of Fine Art in fall 2012. Some of the most stunning images from Canadian picture books will be part of the exhibition celebrating Canadian children’s book illustrations. The exhibit will run from September 11 to October 14.

The kicker (for the Canadian Children’s Book Centre) is that each piece has been graciously donated by leading Canadian illustrators and the sale of these pieces will raise funds to support our programs, publications, and operating costs.

Works have been donated by renowned artists including Rebecca Bender (image on left), Geneviève Côté, Barbara Reid, Michael Martchenko, Mélanie Watt, and many more.

The month-long exhibit will be followed by Take Home an Original, an auction of the original art, on the evening of October 16, 2012.

The Canadian Children’s Book Centre (CCBC) is a national, not-for-profit organization founded in 1976. We are dedicated to encouraging, promoting and supporting the reading, writing, illustrating and publishing of Canadian books for young readers. Our programs, publications, and resources help teachers, librarians, booksellers and parents select the very best for young readers.

At the heart of our work at the Canadian Children’s Book Centre is our love for the books that get published in Canada each year, and our commitment to raising awareness of the quality and variety of Canadian books for young readers.

Our programs, such as TD Canadian Children’s Book Week and the TD Grade One Book Giveaway, are designed to introduce young Canadian readers not only to the books all around them, but to the authors and illustrators that create them. Our quarterly magazine Canadian Children’s Book News and the annual Best Books for Kids & Teens selection guide are designed to help parents, librarians and educators discover the world of Canadian books and to help them to select the best reading material for young readers.

We are thrilled to have The Canadian Children’s Book Centre join us as PaperTigers’ Global Voices Guest Blogger for the month of August. Part 1 of the series “The Canadian Children’s Book Centre Presents TD Canadian Children’s Book Week” was posted here. Part 2 “The Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s TD Grade One Book Giveaway Program” was posted here.

29. A’s Bookshelf: Bangalore, India

Bookshelf #27:
A.
11 years old
Bangalore, India

Here are some of my daughter’s treasures that I would like to share. Pardon the relative disarray: I haven’t got around to making bookshelves yet. These are housed in wardrobes that were cleansed of any clothes and other inconsequential stuff. The first photo is books at hand that A. has earmarked as ‘to be read over the next few weeks’. Note the Bill Bryson book at the far right in the upper row:  A Really Short History of Nearly Everything. The second photo is of  books A. has read. The third photo is the other half of the shelf shown in photo 2. Harry Potter books, Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons series are behind these as is our collection of picture books by the Indian publishers. The thin red and white books obscured by the issue of Tell Me Why are our collection of the Amelia Bedelia books.

31. Prarthana’s Bookshelf: Mumbai, India

Bookshelf #26:

Prarthana
5 years old
Mumbai, India

This is my 5 year old daughter Prarthana’s bookshelf. She has been an avid book lover since she was very very young! I still have the few odd cloth books that she used to chew on (quite literally!) when she was a baby. As an avid story teller herself – books are just a gateway to her imagination. Every time she picks up a new or old book, she builds up from the pictures to spin her very own unique yarns! Now that she has started to read, re-visiting books is an adventure again. I can see the joy in her eyes every time she can read a new word or decipher a phrase. She has now truly begun her journey into losing herself in a world of words and alternate realities. And it is with great pride that I observe her swelling yet well thumbed down bookshelf!

35. 2013 Asian Festival of Children’s Content Project Splash Asia!

With our current PaperTigers issue focusing on the theme of Water in Multicultural Children’s Books and with water playing a crucial role in our Spirit of PaperTigers Outreach (read yesterday’s post to learn more), I was thrilled to learn that water-themed children’s stories will also by highlighted at next year’s Asian Festival of Children’s Content in Singapore!

Project Splash Asia! AFCC 2013

Next year will be the United Nations International Year of Water.

Community and school programmes in many countries will include reading, performing and creating water-themed stories.

Share your favourite stories that have water as a theme, such as Wave by Suzy Lee (California US: Chronicle Books, 2008), Amansinaya-Goddess of the Sea, by Eugene Evasco and Jomike Tejido (illustrator) (Philippines: LG&M, 2007), The Wakame Gatherers by Holly Thompson and Kazumi Wilds (illustrator) (California US: Shen’s Books, 2007), and Water Tales From Around the World (India: Tulika Publishers, 2010).

Project Splash Asia! aims to publish a bibliography and collection of favourite water-themed children’s stories from or about the region for AFCC 2013.

The National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS) hopes the compilation of a bibliography of children’s stories around a universal theme will be a regular project for AFCC to showcase the diversity of talents and children’s literature in the region.

For suggestions and enquiries, please email [email protected].

36. Today is World Refugee Day

An orphaned child
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Mother where are we?
My mind turned East, West, South and North
I could not believe
I looked all round; I could not get a sponsor

Oh! Oh! Oh!
Mother where is my father?
I cannot find my father
Who will pay my school fees?

Oh! Oh! Oh!
Mother why is there no free education for refugees?
Shall we ever go back to our country?

Oh! Oh! Oh!
Mother I wish I was in my country
I could continue with my education up to university
May god bring peace in our country Sudan?
Though I am an orphan
I would enjoy my sweet homeland

Name: Amoti Lillian, 15
School: Can-Rom Primary School, Primary 6

This poem comes from Refugee Children’s Voices: Thoughts and Art by Children Studying in UNHCR Settlements in Uganda, a booklet published by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in 2004 that can be downloaded from the Additional Resources in the Teachers’ Corner section of UNHCR’s website.

The UNHCR has just issued this video summarising the sobering 2011 UNHCR Global Trends Report…

This year the UNHCR invites us to show our support for the millions of refugees around the world by taking a pledge to spread the word of their plight – because “1 family torn apart by war is too many.”

37. Tara Books’ Book Building

During our time at the recent Bologna Children’s Book Fair Marjorie and I had a lovely visit with Gita Wolf and Maegan Chadwick-Dobson from Tara Books.  Tara Books is an award winning,  independent publisher of picture books for adults and children based in Chennai, South India. Founded by Gita in 1994, Tara Books consists of a dedicated group of writers, designers and artists who remain “fiercely independent” and who strive to publish books with the unique union of fine form and rich content. Tara Books sets itself apart from other publishers by truly offering readers a literary and visual feast and they are especially known for their children’s books created by tribal artists in the Gond, Patua and Mithila styles which are made entirely from hand  – from the paper to the printing and binding! Their book Waterlife by Rambharos Jha won the 2012 New Horizons Mention, BolognaRagazzi Awards and is PaperTigers’ Book of the Month.

Besides hearing about the latest Tara Book releases, Marjorie and I also learned more about their exciting new Book Building which just opened off Kuppam Beach Road in Thiruvanmiyur, South Chennai, India. After years of operating out of small rental places and not being able to adequately showcase their books, Tara Books embarked on an ambitious plan to construct a three storey, environmentally friendly building (80% solar powered) that would house all aspects of their business and would become an unique cultural space dedicated to exploring the form of the book.  In February 2012 Book Building opened its doors to much acclaim and fanfare! Book lovers and visual lovers of all ages are invited to come enjoy ongoing exhibitions, watch visual artists at work, participate in workshops, browse though books and art prints in the  bookstore, enjoy specially commissioned wall murals created by a range of Tara Book artists, and more!  Permanent exhibition highlights include Bhajju’s Mural, an original mural by Gond artist Bhajju Shyam (see PaperTigers’ gallery of his work here) on display in the outdoor gallery (images of the mural being painted can be seen here) and The Patua Pillar by Patua artists Manu and Swarna (images of the mural being painted can be seen here).

Book Building is open Monday to Saturday from 10am – 7:30pm and admission is free. To hear about upcoming activities including the launch of an exciting new annual Carnival of Books Festival and the inauguration of the children’s reading corner, visit Tara Books’ 0 Comments on Tara Books’ Book Building as of 1/1/1900

39. CBC (Children’s Book Council) Diversity Committee

Earlier this year the Children’s Book Council (located in the USA) launched the  CBC Diversity Committee in order to:

increase the diversity of voices and experiences contributing to children’s literature. To create this change, the Committee strives to build awareness that the nature of our society must be represented within the children’s publishing industry.

We endeavor to encourage diversity of race, gender, geographical origin, sexual orientation, and class among both the creators of and the topics addressed by children’s literature. We strive for a more diverse range of employees working within the industry, of authors and illustrators creating inspiring content, and of characters depicted in children’s literature.

Click here to visit the CBC Diversity Committee Blog and here to access their Resources page which contains information put together by the Committee for anyone interested in producing, promoting, buying, or writing diverse books for children.

Here in Canada we are currently in the midst of celebrating TD Canadian Children’s Book Week: the single most important national event celebrating Canadian children’s books and the importance of reading! During the week close to 35,000 children, teens and adults are participating in activities held in every province and territory across the country. The theme for TD Canadian Children’s Book Week 2012 is Read a Book, Share a Story and celebrates the importance of sharing stories. 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of Lillian H. Smith becoming the first trained children’s librarian in the British Empire and this year’s book week theme focuses on the important role that librarians play in sharing books and creating lifelong readers (download the theme guide here). The 2012 Book Week posted (image on left) was created by illustrator Janice Nadeau.

During TD Canadian Children’s Book Week twenty-nine English-speaking and five Francophone authors, illustrators and storytellers are visiting schools, libraries, bookstores and community centres in every province and territory across the country. The 2012 Asian Festival of Children’s Content (of which PaperTigers  is a proud sponsor!) will take place May 26 – 29 in Singapore. Programme Director Dr. Myra Garces-Bacsal has just announced that “For the first time, the AFCC is launching a Regional Focus during the conference, a tradition that we hope will continue throughout the coming years. I am very happy to share that the Country of Focus this year is the Philippines.”

This week there are two exciting press events happening for the 2012 AFCC. One in Manila….

And one in Singapore…

46. The Malaysian Booth at the 2012 Bologna Children’s Book Fair

Another highlight for me at the recent Bologna Children’s Book Fair was the Malaysia booth. Norhayati Razali, Assistant Director of the National Book Council of Malaysia, was responsible for the set up and organization of the Malaysian stand and she did a fabulous job! 12 Malaysian publishers and organizations were represented and the contingent of approx.  40 Malaysians at this year’s fair was the biggest group ever. Malaysia is well-known for her friendly people and that definitely held true for all those working at the Malaysian booth! Such a welcoming group of people and everyone eager to talk about Malaysian children’s literature. Malaysia has lots to celebrate in the world of kidlit including the fact that the current President of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), Mr. Ahmad Redza Ahmad Khairuddib, is Malaysian!

Malaysia host a forum with China exhibitors and Mr.  Mingzhou Zhang, Vice President of the Chinese Board on Books for Young People (Chinese Section of IBBY).

It was our lucky day! After the book launch for Yusof Gagah’s latest book Sang Montel both Marjorie and I won beautiful scarves  hand-made by Yusof’s wife Zakiah Moha Isa. Not only is Zakiah a very talented storyteller she is also an amazing batik artist and instructor who converts Yusof’s amazing elephant images onto bags, scarves, and other apparel.

48. Bologna Book Fair – SCBWI Duelling Artists

We didn’t manage to be there for the full two hours but the SCBWI stand at the Bologna Book Fair was even more the place to be from 12.00-2.00 today, when authors from across the regions read their own unpublished manuscript and two (later, I think, three) illustrators battled it out to draw the illustrations.

We caught most of Paul O. Zelinsky (on the left) and Bob Barner (right) working up a frenzy with a fun counting book from Kathleen Ahrens (and John Shelley on guitar!). Whern it came to 10, they pulled the flip charts together and joined forces…

Then Lesley Vamos (left) and Serena Geddes (right) illustrate a story written and read by Chris Cheng:

Sadly, we had to leave before the end but you can see pictures of the whole session on Chris Cheng’s blog.
