How exciting to be welcomed with a huge window display at The Children’s Bookshop Beecroft of ‘Ships in the Field’, a National Year of Reading event.
Anna Pignataro the brilliant illustrator of ‘Ships in the Field’ loved speaking to authors, illustrators, teachers, librarians, kids and friends.
Anna shared her Italian-Egyptian background and how her parents were forced out of Egypt, while I shared my Hungarian refugee background – in ‘Ships in The Field’ – a story of finding home.
Fabulous authors like Wendy Blaxland, Wendy Fitzgerald, Belinda Murrell, Margaret Roc, Felicity Pulman, Isolde Martyn, tanka poet Beverley George …Maria Simpson creator of Bilby Theatre, librarians like the fantastic Claire Stuckey and friends came to celebrate ‘Ships in the Field’.
Loved it!!!!!

Margaret Wild is a leading Australian children’s author. She has more than 70 picture books with so many awards that I’ve lost count.
The adaptation of her brilliant multi award winning picture book FOX illustrated by Ron Brooks and adapated into an opera by Monkey Baa Theatre www.monkeybaa.com.au was one of the great experiences of theatre.
The Lady Cutler Award gift of an illustration by the beautiful illustrator Julie Vivas will be deeply loved.
Edward Coffey who established the Lady Cutler Award which was sponsored by Hodder Publishers spoke about the importance of recognising those who contribute to children’s literature.
In 2011 Edward Coffey Chairman of Peribo www.peribo.com.au has become the new sponsor.
Kate Forsyth and Belinda Murrell award winning fantasy authors spoke about their great-great-great-great mother who wrote the first Australian book ‘A Mother’s Offering’

Warm, welcoming, celebratory – a community sharing story and friendship.
Following the Kids and Young Adult Literature Festival at the NSW Writers Centre, writers, publishers, those involved in Australian creativity poured around The Hughenden bar – so much noise that they drowned out the pianist on the baby grand. But who cared? It was fabulous.
Good food, great wines, good company – it was a Chaucerian feast of storytellers.
It was a great time to thank John Dale Professor of Writing at UTS for his dedicated services to the NSW Writers Centre as the Deputy Chair of the Board.
So many people were there – special welcome to Leah Greengarten NSW Director of Australian Poetry

The Children’s and Young Adult Literature Festival at the NSW Writers Centre is different to other festivals in that the writing community, sharing, friendship, support of the creativity of authors and creators is at the heart of the festival.
The NSW Writers Centre located in the heritage Gary Owen House in the Parklands of Callan Park grounds give a feel of a fair as writers gather, share conversation and food, applaud the launch of a book, craft and the life of publishing children’s and young adult literature.
As the Chair of the Board of the NSW Writers Centre I opened the festival and was embraced by the warmth of the audience, personal interaction, welcome of novice to well published authors, publishers who generously donated their time, screen writers, playwrights, digital writers ….
There was a wealth of talent and commitment to youth creativity in a home of writers.

This Festival supports PEN and PEN’s Empty Chair. This chair was empty, recognising a writer who is persecuted for their work.
At the Festival, the empty chair was for LIU XIA and SUPPORTERS oF Nobel Prize winner LIU XIAOBO 2010. Since the Nobel Committee announced its decision in October 2010, Liu’s wife, Liu Xia, a photographer and poet, has been held under de facto house arrest by Chinese authorities.

Yesterday author Belinda Murrell dropped by to answer some questions about her new book, and about her sister, Kate Forsyth, who is also an author. As promised, Belinda's sister, Kate, is here today. I posed the same questions to her, to see how they differed from Belinda's answers. See for yourself.
Welcome Kate Forsyth.

Jampacked, with champagne flowing, the launch of Kate Forsyth’s ‘The Wildkin’s Curse’ and Belinda Murrell’s ‘The Ruby Talison’ was a celebration of sisters, their joint love of fantasy, family, friends, fans.
Their brother – another talented author, who writes business books – launched his sisters’ books with humour and love. Kate’s dedication to her sister Belinda is beautiful:-
‘For my sister Belinda Murrell
For listening when I need to talk
For talking when I need to listen
And for travelling the writer’s road hand in hand with me.
Belinda and Kate will be speaking at the Kids and Young Adult Literature Festival at the NSW Writers Centre on 3rd July.

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the Somerset Writer's Festival up at the Gold Coast. This was my first Somerset, and whilst I've enjoyed other festivals, this was hands down the most fun I have ever had at a book festival. We all stayed at Jupiter's Casino in town which, at first, I thought was a strange place to accommodate a bunch of authors (especially since I can't stand gambling and all it entails) but it worked out to be a good venue (especially the pool!) albeit a bit surreal. The author/illustrator group were a really nice mix of rockstar authors, the well published and the up and coming folk. And we all seemed to get along very well indeed. There were no big egos roaming around with their publicists and entourage nibbling at their side while we bottom feeders swum aside enviously looking up at their shiny undersides. None of that - which was refreshing. In between sessions and book signings we headed back to the green room (the library) for some down time. This was a great place to have a chat, compare notes and to just chill out (it can get bloody tiring.) Here's some of us kicking back in the green room (in a school photo like way.)
From back L to R: Brian Caswell, James Roy, Nette Hilton, Tony Eaton, Kate Constable, Belinda Murrell, Me, Chris Bongers and John DanalisThe whole thing was so well organised and it's a credit to Karen Mackie, the programme director, that it was such a success. There were a lot of kids. 15,000 tickets were sold - 15,000!! The place was buzzing. I had five sessions over the three days in total, two with James Roy and three by myself. Jim and I did a session based around our book ' The S Word' which is a boys guide to sex and puberty. Jim talked about sex and growing up (basically a stand up routine) and I drew cartoons as quickly as I could. They were fun gigs - also a little challenging trying to find the right line. I was constantly asking myself, 'Do I draw a boob gag here or not?' Our biggest group was 250 odd kids. Here's an iphone photo (a bit blurry) of one of many cartoons. Taken by Belinda Jeffery (Thanks Belinda.)
