1. Ashes by Estevan Vega: Character Interview {Teen Book Scene}

Today I have Emery from Ashes, by Estevan Vega, for a character interview. Enjoy!!

Coffee of Tea? Definitely coffee. I love caffeine. I hate getting up in the morning. Like, really hate it, so a jolt of that stuff in my blood come seven a.m. usually does the trick. Don't tell anyone I'm addicted.

Breakfast or Dinner? Breakfast. I used to hate having dinner with the 'rents. Especially during the last few months before...you know...Nothing says we're a big, happy family like arguing across the dinner table. Mom sucked at cooking too. I think she burnt some of our dinners just so she wouldn't have to cook.

Mac or PC? PC. I know might wanna burn me at the stake for saying this, and that it's not cool or whatever, but I can't stand Apple products. I mean, don't get me wrong, I got sucked into the IPOD phenomenon just like every other teenager, but it's only because it's the only legit mp3 player out there, and because they straight-up murdered the Zune. Plus, I'm a friggin' teenager, man. I don't have 2 grand to spend on a laptop.

Movies or TV? Guess it's a tie. There are some movies I'm really into. I love getting scared, but not too freaked out, just enough scared to make sure I'm still a legit human with feelings and whatever. There's some good TV, but not much. I'm into the Walking Dead. I think it says a crapload about the world we live in, you know? I like to think a little bit. I guess I analyze too much.

Winter or Summer? I met Arson in the summer...and everything changed.

Beach or Forest? The forest. I like to get lost, go someplace where nobody knows where I am. It doesn't mean I wanna go an be all kinds of forgotten; that's not what I'm talking about. I just like to get lost in the woods, get a little freaked out, and then remember that these trees have been here for so long, and that they're so strong, even though they sway when a powerful wind comes in. You chicks with the tan lines probably think I'm weird.

Book or ebook? My dad's all over the Kindle, thinks it's the greatest thing since he discovered they had this new Bible program that allows him to chat with God. That last part was a joke, but needless to say, he was pretty stoked about the program, like he is about his Kindle. And I guess he's got good reason to. I mean, he can literally have hundreds of books at his fingertips at any time. I'm just an old lady that way. Whatever. Me...I like smelling a book, feeling it, knowing it, and messing up the pages because I fell asleep during the best part. I only have a few on my shelves.

Chocolate or vanilla? Black Rasberry with chocolate chips mixed in. Best. Flavor. Ever.

Dog or Cat? Someday, I'm gonna genetically create a hybrid of the two. Ever seen that lame show on Nickelodeon in the late nineties? Yeah, it'll kinda be like that. Only mine will speak Spanish.

Thanks for giving a crap,
-Emery.

2. eBook Review: When Colors Bleed by Estevan Vega

When Colors Bleed
Published March 4, 2011
Format: eBook (Purchase for $0.99)
From Goodreads. WHEN COLORS BLEED is a collection of short stories by the author of ARSON. This collection features three unique stories with universal themes of love, loss, and regret. Watch the colors bleed.

BABY BLUE:
Casey never had any luck with men, even though she was employed by one of the finest clothing stores in New England and saw attractive, “sure kinds” strolling through her section every day like clockwork. At twenty-three years old, she has given up on her dreams of the spotlight, of finding love, and of ever getting out of the small town she reluctantly calls home. But one rainy afternoon, Thomas Rayford, a very unusual and kind stranger, stumbles into her life looking for an odd, baby blue suit. One thing is certain: Casey, the twenty-three-year-old dreamer stuck in a line, will never be the same.

VANILLA RED:
From his cold hell in Block C, a nameless man unfolds this twisted tale. This is the story of a man who becomes something else. A man who had a father once. A man who loved once. “They want to know why. They want a reason,” he confesses. “But nobody likes the reasons. They’re like unwanted children or cancers with no cure. A reason is a justification, an excuse so we can’t be blamed. But I know what it is I’ve done, and there is no reason that can take it back.” So begins Vanilla Red, a confession, a story, a prayer, or perhaps a drip of dark truth in the batter of humanity. Take a look inside and tell me what color you see.

THE MAN IN THE COLORED ROOM:
Colin awakens in a room, jittery, afraid, and confused. He knows not how he got here, who brought him, or why. And the only thing waiting for him is a hot cup of coffee and a seemingly flawless room that bleeds colors. As an architect, he understands that no room is perfect, but somehow this anomaly has crawled through the cracks and pushed the limits of perfection. No seams. No lines. No windows. Enter a bald man in a suit. Once he steps through the door, he makes the colors disappear with the push of button. His name is Jack, and he claims to be a friend. Still unsure of anything, Colin wages war with his mind, with a dark truth he isn’t ready to accept, and with Jack. In the moments that follow, Jack asks Colin a series of questions, questions that will reveal the where, the how, and the why of his arrival.

Review by Kate
WHEN COLORS BLEED, by Estevan Vega, is a collection of short stories from the author of Arson. I am a huge fan of Arson and I anticipate the release of the second book in the series. So when I was asked to read Vega's collection of short stories I was excited to get started.

These stories are not happy, so for those thinking they will be can prepare for quite the opposite. These stories are dark and explore the not so nice part of people and situations that humanity faces. My favorite story out of the three was Baby Blue. I was curious about Thomas Rayford and his consistency in returning to visit the baby blue suit and Casey. At times I forgot that this story was written by a guy. Vega got into the head of Casey so well I could have sworn it was written by a female. I applaud his ability to explore and write Casey honestly.

The other two stories were equally well written but got a bit dark and twisty as the stories unfolded. I definitely stepped out of my comfort zone in that aspect but I was extremely pleased with the outcome of the book.

You can definitely read this collection in one sitt
