Today was a book signing event at my close-by, independent book store. It was a fund-raiser for a small, private school in the area. They had asked me and a couple of other area authors to be on hand to sign and chat with the attendees.
Royce Buckingham was one of them. (I met him at the last event I did.) He is charming and very personable and has very interesting things to say about his experiences in entering the world of children's publishing. Fun to chat with.
I got to sit at a table covered with books. :-) They had 9 of the 12 published Fairy Chronicles and all 4 of the just-released Wind Dancer series. There were a number of fairy-loving girls in attendance so I got to chat and sign a nice number of them (and then they didn't let me leave until I had signed the remainder for the bookstore...)
One of the fairy-girls noticed me sketching in my sketchbook during a lull. She asked if I would draw *her*. I said, sure, as long as she could hold somewhat still for a few minutes.
It was harder than she had expected :-) but we managed a quickie drawing of her.***
So after drawing in church today and the above drawing, I have now finished with my purse sketchbook and ready to move on to my shiny new Moleskine! *That* should make me draw really well, shouldn't it?

Love the drawing of her it's very sweet. Have fun with the mole skin but I believe the magic comes from the artist :D I tried a bit of sketching in church but all I could see was the backs of people so one nice pony tail and then a whimsical lady.
You always amaze me with your talent...I intend to buy a couple of your books for my granddaughter for Christmas...she's quite the fairy lover, herself!

I always empathize with authors who are sort of forced to sign all the books in stock, after the official book signing. Great that you were able to chat with your distinguished readers! :-)
Wonderful likeness Tara. I want to be you when I grow up. Oh wait....I'm way older. Won't work. Not too old to be envious of your talent and booksignings though. Congrats on the books.
The drawing is wonderful - and even better, she learned that things can be harder than she expected, and still be successful and worth doing.
Wow! I lived just across the street from that bookstore until last year. Glad to see you had a good signing... and that Parkplace has recovered from their flood. Looks good as new!
So sweet (and rare!) of you to take the time to draw her sweet portrait! Your sketch & thoughtfulness will stay with her throughout her life~ Maybe the next budding artist!
