<3 Tristan Quotes/Teasers <3

“I’d like to say I love you and mean it. Only, that isn’t enough to describe what I feel for you… how much you mean to me, Elle.”

“Water’s boring.” Elle traced a finger along my jaw, her passion-filled eyes trained on my lips. “I’m not looking for boring tonight.”

The anticipation of wanting her jumped to fucking needing her as she rolled her hips into the pressure against my zipper. “What is it you’re looking for?”

Elle bent forward, lips teasing mine, and whispered, “You.”

<3 Elle Quotes/Teasers <3

“I didn’t think I could fall more in love with you, but you’ve proven me wrong, Tristan Wade Daniels. I love you.”

His lips curved into a wide smile. “Say it again.”

I stepped on my tiptoes and leaned in, my lips a breath away from touching his. I whispered, “I love the way my body craves more of you. I love the way your hands feel while touching me. I love the way your lips taste…”

My eyes darted to his lips, and then back to his eyes.

“I love how much you care. I don’t just love you, but everything about you. I always have, Tristan. I always will.”

He looked up and our gazes met. He was a beautiful mess, and I loved him so much, but the pain he created… well, I didn’t think I’d recover.

6c3a6-newexcerpt

We didn’t talk much during the drive back to our hometown, but words weren’t necessary. The soft smile on Tristan’s face as he drove with his left hand while holding mine in his right screamed louder than any words ever could. He was mine.
Turning to watch the scenery pass by, I let my thoughts drift back to the start of this year. At the beginning of the semester when Tristan told me about his engagement to Kellie, the psycho, I couldn’t breathe from the disappointment crushing my chest. Topping that, he also divulged he’d transferred to Tech, making sure my life remained as miserable as possible. Even though I loved him, seeing Tristan with another woman tore me to pieces.
Before their relationship ended, thinking we’d ever find our way to one another seemed impossible. So, what did I do to get over my hot, football star, best friend? I dated someone completely opposite of Tristan… Eric Green, a handsome baseball player. Eric was super sweet, but at the end of the day he was never who I wanted.
I didn’t intentionally set out to hurt anyone. The way I strung Eric along, knowing I was in love with someone else, left me feeling like a self-centered jerk. Ironically, when Tristan was injured, our relationship started to come together for us while Eric and I fell apart.
Who’d have thought a broken collarbone and a concussion would’ve made us get our heads removed from our asses. But God, the brunt trauma Tristan suffered was bad. Just thinking about it brought tears to my eyes.
I shifted in my seat, removing myself from the past, looking forward to our future.
Peeking over at Tristan’s profile, my chest tightened. The fact that he was able to pull off looking so incredibly sexy that early in the morning awed me. The gritty stubble shadowing his strong jawline and the way strands of hair framed his warm eyes quickened my pulse.
Tristan glanced my way and grinned. Lifting our hands, he brushed a feathery kiss across my skin. “What’s got you so quiet, Spud?”
My knuckles tingled where his lips touched. “Oh, you.”
His smile deepened. “Well, then carry on.”
I fought to keep my eyes open during the rest of our drive. Tristan ran his finger along my cheek, the enamored glint in his eyes made my insides jump.
“You look tired. Get some sleep.” Those perfect, full, kissable lips formed into a sexy, hell-bent grin. “You’re going to need plenty of rest.”
He tore his eyes away from me and back to the road. Sliding the back of his hand down my arm, he then laced our fingers together. “We’re leaving after dinner tomorrow. We haven’t finished making up for,” he turned back to me and winked, “lost time yet.” Tristan squeezed our hands, sending the normal thumping inside my chest into hyper-drive.
I stretched out the soreness from my arms and legs. After the early morning surprise in bed, we woke up and finished another round of lovemaking in the shower. Years of listening to Alyssa prattle on and on about her sexual escapades, I finally understood her, um, enthusiasm. Speaking of which, she was going to flip the next time I talked to her. Man, I missed our late night, or morning talks, although being with Tristan felt right. Perfect.
Tension pulled at the corners of his eyes.
I squeezed his hand. “Hey, what’s wrong?” I balled my other hand, worry settling in my shoulders.
He brought our joined hands to his lips and kissed the inside of my wrist. “Nothing you need to worry about.”
Um, I don’t think so. I attempted to free my hand from his, but his hold remained strong. I gave up. “I can take it, whatever it is. Just spit it out.” My stomached knotted, betraying the lie.
“I’m telling my parents about us.” He glanced down, and the tension cornering his eyes moments ago fell. The side of his mouth pulled up in a cocky grin. “I’m almost hoping my dad kicks me out.” He winked. “Then I’d have an excuse to stay with you.”
I frowned and pulled my bottom lip between my teeth. Shit. His dad hated me. As much as I loved Tristan, I didn’t want to be an added cause to their problems, especially since Tristan and his dad never got along in the first place.
I shook my head. “No, I don’t want to ruin this. We’re together so there’s no use in creating a potential problem between you and your family. I love you, Tristan. I’m not going anywhere. Spend time with your parents and we can tell them about us once we’re back at school.”
Tristan gazed ahead, concentrating on the road in front of us. He remained silent for quite a few minutes, making me worry my bottom lip even more. Finally, he glanced over at me.
“No, I’ve waited to tell them you were mine for years now. No way am I going to pass up the first chance I get in order to make my dad happy.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but he cut me off.
“I’m not playin’, Spud.” His eyes darkened and wrinkles crested his forehead.
Stubborn ass. “All right, fine. I’ll leave my window unlocked,” I grinned, raising a brow, “but only if you’re lucky.”
Tristan chuckled softly, resting our hands in his lap. With his attention back to the road, I closed my eyes and prayed nothing terrible would happen between him and his dad. I used to think Mrs. Daniels didn’t approve of me, but after Tristan’s stay in the hospital, her behavior had changed. She’d been nice. Maybe his dad would do the same.
My throat dried–this time from not knowing if I’d be able to see my sister, Heather, this year. Hopefully this Christmas would be different for both our families. Tristan and I were due for a little peace.
Losing the battle with my eyes, I ended up falling asleep the rest of our way home. Tristan reluctantly dropped me off at my mom’s house. Once my bags were unloaded in my room, he kissed me. His kiss lingered, making my legs weak and my heart ache when the sweet embrace ended. Intensity and heat blazed in his eyes when he backed away.
Clearing his throat, he said, “I’m having a hard time leaving you.”

My Review:

I absolutely loved this story the first time I read it and the second and… you get the picture. Lynn Vroman has a talent for story telling, world building and character creation. I easily picture all the characters in my head. I’m rather fond of the world of Arcus especially (read it, you’ll understand) The love story in this book is beautiful and tragic but doesn’t take over the main story. This novel is full of action and adventure, with a strong heroine who grows as the story progresses. Definitely recommend this YA fantasy!

EXCERPT TIME!

Nothing annoyed me more than crappy best friends. The type who did stupid stuff, like grab my shoulder and scream right in my ear, “Help me, Barbara!”

I jumped and a cloud of popcorn exploded above us. The kernels remaining in the tub I threw in Zander’s face.

We sat in the back row, Night of the Living Dead on the screen. No emergency exit signs interrupted the darkness, adding a little more to the scare department. But Zander killed the mood as soon as the graveyard scene popped up.

“You promised to watch, now watch.” I chucked the popcorn tub at him when he wouldn’t stop laughing.

“Fine, but my hands are stayin’ in my pockets this time.” He rubbed the tiny crescent-shaped marks on his left hand. “I have no idea why you watch these things. You can’t sit through one without a week of nightmares.”

“Not true. The Ring was just extra freaky.”

“Ah, and so were The Shining and Paranormal Activity…” His southern accent rolled off his tongue like sap from a maple tree. “I think you like bein’ afraid all the time.”

I hated it when he was right. “Shut up.”

Fear triggered the fight-or-flight mechanism in our brains. The signal that proved we still wanted to live. That was my theory, anyway.

Maybe I was a masochist, but I did like experiencing the fear. It ensured the numbness hadn’t completely taken over. Numb could be good. A takeover, though…not so good. Zander shoved that logic in my face and smeared my nose in it every time I decided to make sure fight or flight still worked.

“All right, but when you’re lyin’ in that floating bed tonight, don’t expect dream guy to save you.”
“Don’t worry.” I slumped in my chair, focusing on the screen. During a weak moment, and after a couple stolen beers from Dad’s case, I told Zander about Him–my dream guy with gray eyes and dimples. He acted odd afterward, especially when I admitted what Him always promised: I’ll find you.

Yeah, Him was what I called my imaginary guy. No one ever accused me of being creative. Point was, for the last month Zander decided to make a joke of it. I’d never told anybody about my dreams, and I guess I should’ve kept it that way.

Hey, self, remind me again why Zander held the bestie slot? Oh, right. He was the only one who applied for the position.

The next hour we watched in silence. I’d seen this movie at least ten times already, and so his concern of me mauling him never happened.

About the time Barbara annoyed everyone in the house with her relentless Where’s Johnny question, Zander’s constant slurping and ice-crunching crawled under my skin. “It’s empty.”
He took one last noisy sip and stood, blocking my view. “I’m gonna get a refill. You want one?”
“No. Christ!” I bent and twisted to see around him while he countered every move with a grin. I didn’t want to admit it, but that grin always caused my brain to cloud. Hell, having him within a ten-foot radius caused a huge case of head fuzz. But to be clear, I wasn’t the only mountain dweller who found that smile, or that accent, hot.

“Suit yourself. Be back in a sec.” He gathered up some empty wrappers and went out the door, creating a quick flash of light in the room.

Once he left, it didn’t take long for the dark to fold me into its arms as the moans on the screen grew louder. When a particularly menacing zombie ate Barbara, I let out a tiny yelp–even though I knew it was going to happen. My face heated, and I looked around, happy no one witnessed.
I’ll go with coward for $500, Alex.

Sinking deeper into my seat, I watched the whole house get taken over by zombies, my heart pounding and the hairs on my arms standing at attention. Two minutes alone and I was already freaked out.

I gripped the armrests, stealing a glance at the exit. My nails dug into the plastic. Leaving was the obvious remedy, but my legs refused to walk toward the door.
A zombie eating black and white brains filled the screen.
Screw this.

I was out of there whether my legs were ready or not. Yes! Fight or flight still in perfect working order.

Zander was right. I had issues.

I planted my feet on the cement floor and tensed to run. As I hopped up, my arms refused to come with me. I made the mistake of looking down.

What the…?
The armrests curled around my hands, the plastic ends separating into thin, spider-like fingers. I screamed, trying to yank my hands away, but the armrests became stronger, forming rows of fingers that encased the whole length of my arms, burning them. Tears flooded my vision, the pain branding my skin.

Panic turned into terror when the theater filled with whispers that brushed through my hair like wind and hit me in the face like an open palm. The whispering slipped into my throat when I opened my mouth, gagging me while it pushed me back into the seat. I struggled as the chair sucked me in and gasped for enough air to yell, the sound coming out as a grunt.
My head stayed glued against the seat, my scalp searing as I tried to yank it free. Then the movie stopped playing. Total darkness swallowed me, the blackness stealing the last drops of my courage. No matter how hard I tugged, my arms refused to pull free. I strained to turn my head toward the exit, but it stayed nailed to the chair. All I could do was look forward and try to relax my arms to stop the burning.

The whispers grew quieter, and the hold it had on my head weakened when I stopped moving. I cleared my throat. “Zander!”
My arms loosened a fraction.

Excerpt:
He grinned with his infamous Maxwell smirk as he cupped my face.

I had barely caught my breath when his mouth was on me. I opened to him as his tongue dipped inside, twining with mine. He tasted like forever. I wiggled against his hardness, and he moaned. Abandoning my mouth, he trailed his lips along my jaw, my ear, and my neck. He licked over my racing pulse while the heat from his hands was scorching my back. His torment was too much, yet not enough. My clothes grew constrictive. I wanted to feel his bare skin against mine.

As if he sensed my need, he lifted my sweater over my head, throwing it to the floor. His eyes were seas of shimmering copper. The backs of his fingers ghosted up and over my abs to land on the clasp of my bra. For perhaps one second he hesitated before unsnapping it. When he did, I sucked in a breath, my nipples hardening. He removed one strap then the other before it fell behind me.

“Beautiful,” he breathed, as he traced the outline of my breasts, teasing, but never touching the sensitive peaks that ached for his magical fingers or even his mouth.

I pressed my hips into him, feeling his arousal. Desire swirled down my belly in a slow, sinuous slide.

He groaned, deep and sensual. “Baby, tell me what you want.”

My body tingled. My brain went blank. “You.” All I wanted to do right now was feel him and everything he had to offer.

His eyes widened with a savage intensity that frightened me, yet calmed me. He pressed a kiss to my breast, gliding his warm mouth over my nipple before sucking on it. I arched into him, rubbing against him. He moaned, giving my other breast the same attention.

I fisted my hands in his sweater, tugging it up. He eased back, raising his arms. I lifted his sweater and T-shirt over his head before tossing it aside. My gaze wandered over him, drinking in every muscled inch of him from the line of light brown hair that disappeared into his jeans, to the six-pack abs that sculpted his midsection, to the tattoos on his chest. Pushing his fingers through my hair, he brushed his lips over mine.

“Are you sure, Lace?” His voice was barely audible.

“Help me!”

“You always smell like apples and flowers.” She inhaled deeper, making it hard for him to breath.
“It’s our orchard.” The strain of control made his voice a whisper, and against his better judgment, he bent to kiss the top of her head, allowing his lips to linger in the softness of her hair.
“Our orchard? Is that where we’re going?” She craned her neck, and green eyes shot him straight in the heart.
Mouth dry, he said, “Somewhere better.”

“What about you? You immortal or something?”
His eyes hardened, the smile turning a little dangerous. “No, I’m just really good at staying alive.”

Excerpt

“I’ve told you fifteen times already, Agent Grimes, I don’t know how he died. Cicero and I fought and I heard Thompson getting his ass kicked. I ended the fight as fast as inhumanly possible and rushed out to help him. That’s when the cavalry came in through the proverbial window. When we went back into the office, Cicero wasn’t undead anymore.” I sighed as I recounted the made-up chain of events for the fiftieth time since returning to Washington, D.C.
I closed my eyes and thanked the gods the events of the past month were over. The weeks I spent working as an agent in the Chicago field office of the FBI had been pure hell. I got my partner assaulted by one vampire, and then killed by a different vampire named Cicero. The master of the City of Chicago had been a crazed lunatic and my partner paid the ultimate price. I held back the tears for my dead friend and smiled, for the gods had given me Thompson, my current partner, werelion extraordinaire, and the only reason Cicero had his ashes in a ceramic container and I didn’t.
“Agent Ashlyn,” Agent Grimes began and cleared his throat, “the forensic team found Cicero’s body with his throat torn out and completely drained of blood. Let me get this straight, you have absolutely no idea how he ‘became un-undead’?” I’d answered this question so many times I was about to snap, and how dare he quote me to myself.
“Grimes, I’ve explained this a hundred times and at least five of those times to you. The wounds inflicted on Cicero couldn’t have killed him. Even a common vampire couldn’t be killed by blood loss, so I didn’t kill him. Even if I had, it would have been self-defense! The deputy director himself congratulated me on a job well done. Why the sudden change?”
“It’s easy. We didn’t know you ate the rogue vampire, Ashlyn. You’re an FBI agent, hired to police the rogue vampires. That means bringing them in so they can be incarcerated, tried by jury, and punished by a court of law!” He seemed to mean every word he said. Was this guy joking? A vampire who kills somebody doesn’t get a jury. They’d be lucky to get a cell without a window.
“Which is why I tried to non-lethally subdue him,” I lied again through my teeth. The douchebag abducted my injured partner, used him to get to me, and then killed him without a second thought. If you ask me, he got what he deserved. I fought down the urge to flip my superior off and walk out of the room. “What else can I do for you, Agent Grimes? I’ve answered all your questions, I’ve filed all my reports, and honestly I don’t know what else to say. If you don’t believe me, the Deputy Director will have my resignation in the morning.” I stood and made my way to the door, not giving the mousy man a chance to respond.
I thought the entire act of my rebellion quite debonair until I placed my hand on the knob and tried to turn the handle. I could have sworn I heard a trombone somewhere in the room going wa-wa-waa. Talk about ruining the moment. I watched Grimes when he came through the door. He didn’t lock it, so I knew something wasn’t right. I turned around and stared at the balding man sitting at the table tapping his pen on his notepad and staring pointedly at the mirror on the wall. “Sonofabitch,” left my lips beforeI could curb my tongue.
Instead of rounding on Grimes, I walked over to the mirror. I stopped in front of it and crossed my arms. I thought about knocking on it to get their attention, but settled for my secondary idea. I uncrossed my arms and held out my talon. Slowly, I etched a circle slightly larger than my head in the otherwise perfect surface of the glass. Once it was completely etched, I rapped my knuckles against it. I smiled as the circle fell out smoothly and shattered on the floor in the tiny dark room behind the mirror.
A normal human wouldn’t have been able to see in the dark room, but I didn’t have a problem. I peered in and saw the Deputy Director standing next to a tall slender man I’d never seen before. I stood there staring at the both of them and waited for some sort of explanation.
“Agent Ashlyn, please meet me in my office in five minutes,” the Deputy Director said without a hint of emotion or surprise.
I seriously considered telling him what he could go do with himself in his office, but I blinked and pulled my face from the Ashlyn-sized hole in the glass. I turned and strode past Grimes. By the time I reached the door, the handle was unlocked, denying me the satisfaction of ripping the door off its hinges. I snarled and made my way to the elevator.

Teasers/Quotes

“Kid, I hope you know you’re filling out the report on this one.”
”Hey, it wasn’t my fault, chief. They had rocket launchers.”
”Why is it with you, they always have rocket launchers?”
”Whatever works? They keep missing with the smaller crap.”
He laughed, a little.
”Can we get a ride?”
”Not if they’re still out there with more rockets.”
I really hoped not to get shot tonight. I hated clothes shopping.
I didn’t look back as we got into the suburban and drove back to the hotel.
Why should I look back? Marcel would fix it. Marcel fixed everything.

Genres: YA Urban Fantasy

Published: Sept 9 2014

Untold Press www.untoldpress.com

Blurb:

Last summer, Anna’s world got turned upside-down. It’s hard to believe her travels to different worlds and fantastic yet dangerous adventures really took place. Little things, like the twinge of pain from her healing ribs, and a few relics, remind her that her journeys did actually occur. David, a ghost she met on her travels, suddenly reappears, bringing both old friends and foes back into her life. To help Sabaska, Anna must attempt to rescue captured Travelers from a Vanir stronghold, and still get home in time for school. An easy task compared to dealing with her mixed feelings for Cahir.

Uncovering a Vanir plot to find a powerful lost mage will test her strength and dedication to the Travelers. With the help of new and old friends, they set out in search of the mage. He could tip the balance of the war in either side’s favor and it’s up to Sabaska and Anna to get there first.

REVIEW: I looooved the sequel to Sabaska’s Tale! Even more action, Cahir is back (swoon) along with some new friends. A fun and easy read, great for fantasy lovers and especially if you’ve a special place in your heart for horses :) Recommended for tweens and up!

Excerpt:

“You have the most boring life,” a faint voice said in Anna’s ear.

Straightening from her hunched position over her math test, Anna looked wildly around, her heart racing.

“Right here,” the voice said again.

Turning, she shrieked as a gray man solidified next to her in the aisle. Her pencil snapped in her hand. She picked up one of the broken ends and held it like a weapon.

“Now, is that anyway to treat an old friend?”

Anna stared at the gray man a little longer, took in the tight pants, belt full of pouches, and cloak. She sighed. Being able to see through him should have been her first clue.

“Anna, is there a problem?” Her math teacher, Mr. Frank, sounded annoyed.

Anna looked around. The entire class stared at her. “Uh.” She glanced at David, the apparition, and then back at the class.

“Well, they can’t see me right now, of course.” He sounded smug. “Would you like them to?”

“No,” she muttered, answering both her teacher and the ill-timed specter. “No. I’m sorry, Mr. Frank. I just thought I saw something, like a ghost, and it scared me. I’ve been reading some scary stories recently and I guess they got to me.” It sounded lame, even to her, especially in the middle of a midterm math test.

“Very well, Anna. Please keep your hauntings to yourself in the future.”

Several people in the class snickered. Karen, her best friend, shot her a concerned look before going back to her test. Anna shut her eyes for a minute, wondering what the gossips would say about the incident. “We can talk later,” she muttered at the ghost.

“Of course, Anna.” His cultured voice sounded amused and apologetic.

She shook her head, not really angry with David. He had saved her and Sabaska’s life over the summer and she could survive a few days of ridicule so he could have some amusement. And he was right; her life was boring. Especially after last summer. She pushed those thoughts away, took a deep breath, and forced herself to focus on the test.

EXCERPT:

#1

I shouldn’t be… this is wrong. I should be… Her thoughts reeled, searching for answers. On my cot, clean and bandaged, not… sticky… and smelling like….

The pervading scent of blood burst through her mind, creating explosive tingles throughout her body. Sarenka’s scarlet eyes snapped open. The lights of her freni-kyn hair sparked, throwing off bits of glowing color. She threw herself backward, scrabbling to get away but the chain anchored her there. Too close. Oh god!

The master’s glazed eyes stared coldly across the short space. Her stomach wrenched into dry heaves, sending shards of pain stabbing through her mind. She squeezed her eyes shut, fighting off the morning-after-nausea of the foreveron drug. A single pain-tear trickled down her cheek before she forced her eyes open.

Dead… he’s… dead. Dizzying relief flooded her senses. She stared at the man’s broken body, lip lifting in a snarl. And he’ll never touch me again.

14. Shattered Assassin by Wendy Knight Review

Book Description

September 17, 2014
When the royal family is brutally murdered, Princess Kazia alone is left to rule the kingdom. But how can she rule when her home has burned to the ground and at any moment the assassin may return to finish the job?

Under the protection of the Captain of the Royal Guard — her late brother’s childhood best friend — the princess must flee to protect herself and what is left of the royal line until the assassin can be found and brought to justice. First to her uncle’s estate and then to her betrothed’s kingdom, but the assassin seems to be one step ahead of them all along the way.

And then there is the captain. With every mile they travel together, Princess Kazia must fight the feelings for him that she thought she had left behind long ago.

Surviving until her coronation seems like an impossible task. But survive she must…

With both her life and her heart at stake, the weak and seemingly helpless Princess Kazia still bears a secret. One that can either save her and her kingdom or take everything she has left.

My thoughts: This is a brand spanking new release from Wendy Knight. I have to say, I’m a huge fan of hers. After getting sucked into her Feudling books, and then her Riders of Paradesos, I jumped at the chance to read this one. She doesn’t disappoint! With an interesting world, and great characters (loved the wolf too!) you’ll get pulled right in. If you love fantasy romance spiced up with action don’t miss Wendy Knight’s  Shattered Assassin!
Grab a copy on Amazon!

Biography

Wendy Knight was born and raised in Utah by a wonderful family who spoiled her rotten because she was the baby. Now she spends her time driving her husband crazy with her many eccentricities (no water after five, terror when faced with a live phone call, etcetera, etcetera). She also enjoys chasing her three adorable kids, playing tennis, watching football, reading, and hiking. Camping is also big: her family is slowly working toward a goal of seeing all the National Parks in the U.S.
You can usually find her with at least one Pepsi nearby, wearing ridiculously high heels for whatever the occasion may be. And if everything works out just right, she will also be writing.

Excerpt:

Frantically, I searched her face until I reached her wounded eyes, and my insides knotted with uncertainty. I claimed her lips with mine, fitting perfectly together. Her mouth opened, and the salty taste of her tears forced reality into the room. As much as I wanted the kiss to linger, I had to make her understand how much I wanted her, and only her. Reluctantly, I backed away.

“I’ve loved you since we were kids. I wanted it to be me instead of that dick, Mark James, on your first date. I’ve wanted you so fucking bad, but I never told you how I felt because the thought of losing you, even as a friend, terrified me.”

Her green, shock-filled eyes pooled with tears again. I did the only thing I thought would make her believe me. My hand wrapped around the back of her head, fingers weaving through her hair. I inched her closer until I felt her soft lips against mine.

The kiss started in a slow exploration. The moment my tongue met hers, her breath caught and her body shivered. My heart raced like a jackhammer when her fingers spread through my wet hair and the kiss deepened.

Damn she felt good, and tasted even better. Her lips were soft, but eager for more. Her hair felt like smooth silk beneath my hand. I wrapped my other arm around her waist and pulled her tighter against me, only it wasn’t enough. I wanted more.

Teasers/Quotes:

I fisted my fingers in his hair wanting, no needing, to get lost in his embrace. His distraction was what I had needed to finally let go.

Tristan devoured me in his arms, squeezing me tight. I allowed his embrace, wanting to hold on to the moment before it was gone…lost to someone else.

I ran my thumb over her bottom lip, needing to be sure she was really there and not a figment of my imagination. I didn’t wonder long. Taking control, Elle grabbed my shirt and crashed her lips to mine.

Best. Fucking. Kiss. Ever.

18. The Blue Effect Release Day Blitz with Rose Shababy

Title: The Blue Effect: A Renegade Heroes Novel
Author: Rose ShababyGenre: Adult Sci Fi Fantasy

Blurb:
Blue Brennan is jaded and bitter despite her pinup girl looks and quick wit. Night after night, she scours the Seattle club scene looking for someone or something to fill the emptiness inside.
When she meets the mysterious Kasey, her world stops… literally.
He claims she has the ability to control time and stuns her even further when
he reveals his own gifts.
Blue is inexplicably drawn to Kasey and reluctantly enters his
world filled with a new breed of humanity. They’re misfits like her, blessed or
cursed with powerful abilities, struggling to hide their differences from the
rest of society.
Then the group discovers a nameless, faceless sociopath with
nightmarish powers; and he’s coming for Blue. She’s left reeling when they
discover her gifts are the key to defeating his terrible evil and saving them
all.
Now she must race against the clock to harness her own powers and
save her new friends. Can she be more than a renegade? Can she be a hero too?

Rose Shababy and her family reside in eastern Washington State. Rose grew up in the Northwest but swears she’s going to move to warmer climates someday. She’s claimed this for over 20 years, however, and has yet to move more than 75 miles away from her mother.
Rose has a deep love of all things Star Trek and yearns to travel
the heavens, as well as an intense desire to be bitten by a radioactive spider.
Unfortunately she sucks at science and math so she hasn’t been able bring her
dreams to life, instead living vicariously through books, comics, television
and film. She hopes to someday make a million dollars so she can afford to buy
her way to the international space station, but she’d settle for being able to
fly around the world and leap tall buildings in a single bound.
Rose also loves to cook and worked for years in a gourmet Italian
grocery and deli where she learned to hone her skills. She prepares culinary
masterpieces for her family, but fervently wishes the dishes would wash
themselves. Especially now that her dishwashers/children are nearly grown and
only one still lives at home.
Rose likes to use her free time wisely. For instance, she likes to
daydream, will often read for hours until she falls asleep on the couch with an
electric blanket and a warm tabby cat curled up on her hip, as well as spending
cozy weekend days watching Syfy movies like Sharknado and Mega Piranha with her
husband.
If Rose were a cartoon animal, she’d prefer to be a wise old owl
or a sleek and sexy jaguar, but in reality she’d probably be a myopic mole with
coke-bottle glasses.

Review Blurb:
The best debut novel I’ve read in years. Blue is the type of unique, honest, protagonist usually only experienced in Stephen King novels. The Blue Effect was part Fight Club, part X-Men and sucked me in from the very first chapter to the very last word. Powerfully written with a compelling plot and wicked antagonist. Couldn’t ask for anything more – except the sequel! –Robert Dugoni, NY Times Best Selling Author – My Sister’s Grave

Excerpt One
As I scanned the crowd my eyes fell on one person out of sync with the rest. Close to my age, maybe a little older, he obviously didn’t belong in the club. His clothes, messy looking slacks and a gray t-shirt, hung on his lean frame. He finished his look with a tartan scarf and brown fedora that seemed more at home on an old man than one in his twenties.
He pulled his hat off and shaggy brown hair fell across his eyes as he danced. Well, he didn’t dance so much as sway to the music, his eyes closed while a hint of a smile graced his lips. As he danced, he bobbed his head back and forth and his hands moved like graceful waves. His shadow grin seemed to infuse his entire body. He danced by himself as if he didn’t care what anyone around him thought, as if he danced for himself and no one else. He looked completely out of place, yet he appealed to me and I felt myself wanting to go to him.
I was shocked by the surge of jealousy that rushed through me as I stared at him. His face broke through my drunken haze and I realized this man was no paper doll. His face belonged to a truly happy man. Hell, he looked fucking ecstatic.
He had the face of an angel.
Excerpt Two
“Kasey,” I yelled stupidly, knowing it wouldn’t do any good but unable to stop myself. “Kasey, where are you?”
I burst through another door to find the bathroom, a layer of steam frozen in the air. I pulled the curtain back without even thinking about who might be in the shower, and slumped with relief when I found Kasey. He held a washcloth to his face as a stream of water rained down on him, frozen in place.
“Kasey,” I breathed happily, and reached out to grab his hand.
As I touched him, the same spark I always felt when we made contact erupted and the world came to life again. Water spewed all over me, soaking my clothes, spilling over onto the floor, but I didn’t care.
Kasey startled and yelped a little when he saw me. He recovered quickly. “Blue? What happened?”
I smiled, my tears mixing with the hot water from the shower as I launched myself at him, hugging him tightly. He smiled back and wrapped his arms around me.
Thank god I found you! I thought. “I’m so glad you’re here,” I whispered in his ear.
“I knew you would come back,” he whispered back, just before his lips found mine.
Excerpt Three
Clearly the time had come for the two of us to have it out. “I may have thought you were hot when we first met, and you got to listen to the nasty thoughts in my head, but every time we meet I find it harder to like you. In fact, every time you open your mouth, you get uglier and uglier. I don’t know if Val was right, and you really are jealous, but let me make this crystal clear for you. There is no part of me that wants you.”
His eyes narrowed for a moment, and then, before I could do anything, his hands shot out and grabbed my shoulders again. He yanked me close to him and I the heat from his chest burned through my t-shirt. His face was so close to mine I could feel his hot breath blazing against my cheek when he spoke. “You’re a little liar,” he hissed. “There is a part of you that likes this,” he shook me a little and I flushed with rage… and something else. “And goddamn me, there’s a part of me that likes it too.” He hovered with his face still close to mine and for a moment I thought he was going to kiss me. My head fell back slightly and my lips parted involuntarily as I anticipated his invasion.
Then he released me, almost flinging me away from him. I pressed my back against the wall as I watched him and tried to catch my breath as my traitorous heart beat so hard I thought it might burst out of my chest.
“Let me make this crystal clear for you,” he mimicked. “Kasey is like a brother to me and if you hurt him, you’ll wish you never met me.”

“I already do,” I whispered with sincerity.

Review: 5 stars!

If you enjoy shifter books, then don’t miss this one! Do be warned, this is not a paranormal romance. There is a tad of romance inside, but it’s not the central part of the story. I’d call this more military in nature, but also deals a lot with Rick dealing with what/who he is. Lots of action, fighting, guns, and a kick ass female agent included too. Due to subject matter, language and violence I’d rate this for 18+.

Blurb:

It is amazing how quickly a phone call can interrupt your life, even when you’re a werewolf. Rick Keller hangs up from the unwanted call, but the shadowy organization he once belonged to doesn’t take such an answer lightly. Waking up collared and caged by MONIKER is a quick way to learn retirement isn’t always permanent. Death will be if he doesn’t accept their assignment.

Keller and his new team follow a group of human traffickers on a thin trail across the globe. Their only hope is in a man who hasn’t had much practice being a werewolf in a really long time, a sadistic agent who loves making dog jokes, and a beautiful operative who is better with guns than relationships.

If being forced back into service wasn’t bad enough, he quickly discovers they have many new experiments to try out on their pet wolf. Even worse, MONIKER now isn’t the only one who knows his secret.

Hopefully an old dog can learn some new tricks, especially if he wants to stay alive.

Author Bio

Rachel A. Brune graduated from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts in May 2000, and was immediately plunged into the low-stakes world of entry-level executive assistant-ship. Her unexpected journey out of that world and into the military is chronicled in her self-published book Echoes and Premonitions. After five years as a combat journalist, including two tours in Iraq, and a brief stint as a columnist for her hometown newspaper, she attended graduate school at the University at Albany in NY, where she earned her MA in Political Communication, and her commission as a second lieutenant in the military police corps. Although her day job has taken in her in many strange, often twisted directions, Rachel continues to write and publish short fiction. She released her first novel, Soft Target, in early 2013. Excerpt:

“Keller.”

The man behind the weapon was a ghost, a black tactical suit concealing his form, expensive scope mounted on some sort of rifle. I howled again and lurched at him, brought down short by another surge of the change. I struggled to remain upright but found myself on my knees.

Another man appeared to the side, shining a bright, piercing strobe light at my eyes, disorienting me as I tried to turn to face the new threat, my traitorous body rendering my reactions unreliable.

I scrambled to get my feet under me, but the final throes of the change robbed the ground from me. I flailed my paws against the last remnants of my work clothes, now torn and scattered on the ground.

I heard the explosion of gases from the chamber of the first man’s rifle a split second after the bullet pierced my side. I yelped and fell sideways, trying to relieve the pressure. I rolled to all fours and lunged toward the man, intent on relieving the pain by ripping the screams from his throat.

He shot again and again as I reached him, bowling him over and aiming for the soft pieces exposed to my grip.

Instead of soft viscera beneath my teeth, the next sensation I felt came as intense pain, which slowed and disjointed my movements. I raised my head, snapping and gnarling in vain against the folds of the net suddenly enveloping me. Ignoring the second man–stupid mistake. From the burning the lines of the net raised against my hide, I could tell the wires were laced with silver filaments.

The man with the rifle scrambled away from me. I let him go, rolling on the ground, trying to escape the clutching net.

“He’s a big one.” The second man spoke the words, looking down on me from an impossible height as the pain began to outweigh the panic. I could feel the silver working against my struggling.

“He always was.” The first man hocked and spat. It smelled of Copenhagen. “It’s going to be a bitch dragging him down to the truck.”

The words made no sense. I listened, but could not understand.

“If we let you up, do you promise to be a good doggie?” The man with the rifle prodded the barrel into my side.

I growled, but it was mostly wishful thinking, the energy from the night and the change suddenly sapped by the ensilvered net. I lay on my side and simply lolled.

“Good boy.” The man kept his rifle trained at me as his partner knelt down and fiddled with the edge of the net. Grasping a loop from the edge, he pulled. The line must have been attached in some ingenious way so when he pulled on it, it contracted the net into a small, compact circle around my neck.

“Come on.” The second man jerked at my neck, holding the line as a leash. “I’m not carrying you down this hill in the dark.”

The net continued to burn against my neck as he dragged me to my feet. Head hanging, I padded after him through the snow.

He shot again and again as I reached him, bowling him over and aiming for the soft pieces ex-posed to my grip.

I let him go, rolling on the ground, trying to es-cape the clutching net.

“He’s a big one.” The second man spoke the words, looking down on me from an impossible height as the pain began to outweigh the panic. I could feel the silver working against my strug-gling.

Head hanging, I pad-ded after him through the snow.

MY REVIEW:

I loved the first book in the series, My Soul to Keep. This one was just as good, if not better. The witty, sarcastic humor continues, with more fighting, more bad guys and some new characters as well. Connor coming into his powers is quite a great read, and Clarisse never disappoints. The ending….oh my! Go… read it now!

Chapter 1

I must have cried myself out. The tears stopped falling and I breathed in through my nose. I stood up and looked down at my baby sister lying there. I kissed my fingertips and touched her forehead.

“Goodbye, brat,” I whispered.

“Stop calling me brat.”

Caelyn’s eyes opened. Her irises were blood red. She gave me an impish smile and bared her fangs.

Little sisters suck.

I should have felt five million things, relief that my sister was still alive, sort of, being the foremost. The only thing I could really think about was how to tell my parents. Um…Mom, Dad, your daughter’s a vampire…Yeah, that probably wouldn’t go over too well. As awkward as it was, I reached down and hugged her for all that she was worth.

“Are you insane? Get off me!” She squirmed in my hug and got her hands on my chest. When she tried to gently push me away, she ended up throwing me halfway across the room. I skidded to a stop on the linoleum floor without crashing into anything. Caelyn sat up on the morgue table with a horrified look on her face. “What just happened?”

She looked around and knew. She knew where she was and why she was there. She stared down at her hands. Sure enough, she’d grown talons just like Brett had when he became a vampire. Caelyn knew exactly what she was, but the look she gave me begged for me to tell her something different, that she was wrong.

I couldn’t. I gave her a slow nod, confirming her fears and completely destroying the last bit of hope she might have had.

My sister and I hadn’t gotten along since she was two. Giving her horrible news had always been one of my favorite recreational sports. Hey, Cae, Mom found that test you were trying to hide. Hey, Sis, Dad found out you kissed Chuck. That sort of thing had given me more satisfaction than my PS3 ever had. Unexpectedly, that one simple nod, telling my sister her worst fears were true and that she was a vampire, made me feel a little sick to my stomach. “Cae, I…”

Her face crumpled into a mask of anguish. I heard the first tear hit the metal table beneath her before the first sob escaped her lips. I was back across the room before the second one fell. The first hug I had given my sister was awkward. She didn’t want me hugging her. This time she collapsed in my arms and accepted it. Maybe even needed it.

“What happened?”

Her question kind of threw me off guard. “We thought you were dead,” I said, thinking she meant how she ended up in the morgue.

“I swear, Mom and Dad dropped you when you were a child. I know why I’m here. I meant why am I alive? Why do I have talons? Am I a vampire like that asshole who broke into the house? Am I going to stay this way? What am I going to do now? More importantly, what the hell are you? I saw you! You had wings? Connor…”

“Wait! Slow down,” I said and pulled away. I leaned against the table and she tightened the sheet around her. “I don’t know how you became a vampire. I’ll be honest. It’s not supposed to happen that way, but I’m glad it did. I’d rather have a fangy sister than no sister.” I gave her a little smile and she rolled her eyes. Typical Caelyn.

“What do you mean it’s not supposed to happen that way?”

“Vampires. What happened wasn’t how it was supposed to happen. Somebody can wish to become a vampire, but they can’t make anybody else a vampire against their will. It doesn’t work like that.”

“What doesn’t work like that? What the hell are you talking about and more importantly, what the hell did they turn you into?”

Dad’s cough from outside the door stopped our conversation.

“Listen, Cae. I promise to tell you everything as soon as we get out of here and I figure out what to tell Mom and Dad.”

She nodded and wiped the tears rolling down her cheeks with the back of her hand. “Okay.”

I needed help. “Stay right here. Play dead,” I added with a small, sad smile that actually made her give a short bark of laughter.

“I think I can manage.”

I nodded and made my way to the morgue room doors. I glanced through the window and saw Dad standing in the hallway looking like… Well, looking like his daughter had just died. I pushed the door open and he looked up from the floor. “You ready to go, Connor?”

“Dad,” I said and looked him right in the eye. “You need to wait here for a moment. Do not go into the morgue.” I used my power just like Clarisse had taught me to. He would obey. He didn’t have a choice. His eyes glazed over and he stared straight ahead.

I ran through the halls of the hospital to the waiting room where I’d left Clarisse and my mom sitting and crying. Clarisse saw me–or felt me–as soon as I entered the room. I gave her a panicked smile and whispered, “I need you,” as quietly as possible. I knew she would be able to hear me. She gave a small, almost imperceptible nod and patted Mom’s leg.

“I’ll be right back, Mrs. Sullivan. I need to use the restroom.”

I slipped back out into the hall before my mom could see me and waited for her.

“What’s going on?” She sounded halfway between hopeful and worried.

“You’re not going to believe this. Follow me.”

“Believe what?”

“Don’t ask. Just follow me,” I said and led her back to the morgue.

Clarisse barely gave my father a glance as we entered. Caelyn was lying back on the cold metal table completely unmoving. She looked dead again.

“Connor. I already said goodbye…”

Cae’s eyes opened and she let out a little, “Boo!”

“Well, shit,” Clarisse said deadpan.

Blurb:

Senior year is supposed to be fun: boys, dances and graduation. It’s significantly harder to enjoy it when you’re dead.

Thanks to an innocent game of Truth or Dare, I wound up sleeping in a graveyard. Probably not the brightest thing I’ve ever done, but thanks to a couple of well-placed fangs, I’m here to tell the tale.

Vampires might stalk pop culture, but they’re just myths, right? Yeah. Not so much…

Everything seems a lot more difficult when you’re a nocturnal creature of the night, especially school. I was managing, but couldn’t keep it hidden from my friends. Steph decided that we should be cool, like superheroes, and fight crime.

I’m a vampire, not a hero. Living in a sleepy New England town, crime is a little harder to come by. At least it is until a serial killer moves into the area. He’s got the authorities stumped, but then again, the cops don’t have a teenage, blood-sucking, non-hero on their team. It doesn’t take long for me to discover the world is full of monsters. I may be one of them…but will I turn out to be the hero, or the killer everyone is looking for.

MY REVIEW:

This is a young adult book you don’t want to miss. With everything from vampires to the fey, this page turner will keep you up late reading. I loved the witty humor and the characters and will for sure be checking out the next book.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

I had plans for my last year of high school. I was going to find a boyfriend, go to a few dances, and though I hadn’t told my mom yet, take some beginning paramedic courses in the spring. I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do with my life– wasn’t that what college was for? I liked the idea of being a hero, like my dad, and saving lives every day. That had been the plan anyway, but a sleepover and a late-night dare had changed everything.

A lot.

“Megan, time for school,” Mom called up the stairs.

I peeked out the window, squinting at the sunlight glinting off the windshield of my Jeep. It was too damn sunny for me to get from my house to the Jeep without third degree burns–or worse.

“Honey?”

My newly sensitive ears could hear the soft brush of her socks on the carpet as she walked up the stairs. I crawled back into bed and did my best to look tired and sick. It wasn’t hard with my pale skin, and I hadn’t been eating well. If I didn’t let her get a good look at me, she might buy that I had a cold or something. Another thought tickled at the back of my mind. I could make her think I was sick. I shoved the thought away in disgust. I wasn’t going to use mind control on someone I loved.

The door creaked open and Mom walked in. My heart would have been racing–if it still could.

“Megan?” Mom’s voice sounded full of concern.

I groaned and pulled the covers down off my head. “Mmmm?”

“It’s time for school. You didn’t come down for breakfast.” Her flat tone covered her worry with annoyance.

“I don’t feel well.”

“Honey….”

“I don’t.” I tried to make myself sound hoarse.

“You’ve been eating so poorly. Try to eat, and then go to school. I’ll write a note for you.”

I faked a cough.

Mom sighed. “You’ve been sick so much recently. Maybe you should go to the doctor.”

“No, it’s just a cold.” I hadn’t been “sick” that much. We rarely saw the sun this time of year. As long as I wore sunglasses, a hat, and long sleeves, I didn’t burn. It was simply really uncomfortable. I felt horrible for the deception, but what could I do?

“It’s beautiful outside for a change. Go outside and get some fresh air.”

I panicked at the thought. “No, I just want to sleep.” And I did. So very much.

It was hard enough to be awake at all on cloudy days; sunny ones were pure torture.

“Meg.”

My stomach sank at the worry in Mom’s voice, but I couldn’t tell her what was wrong. Not only wouldn’t she understand, but I didn’t want to end up in the freaking loony bin when I claimed I was something that didn’t really exist.

“All right, honey. Sleep well. I’ll call in sick for you.”

“Thanks.” I mentally shrank away from her concern and fought tears of frustration. I didn’t want my life to be full of lies, which put distance between us. We had to take care of each other, but I could only hide from her.

She shut my door and left, quiet footsteps strangely loud in my ears. I sighed and pulled the blanket over my head again.

My life changed several weeks earlier at my best friend’s ill-fated birthday party. Well, ill-fated for me, anyway. Steph had a great time.

Truth or dare, a stupid game everyone I knew played at least once in their lives. Afraid of the truth, I had chosen the dare–spend the rest of the night in the graveyard near Steph’s house. Easy enough, right? Well, it had been up until the point where I was attacked and killed. It wasn’t something you normally walked away from, but for better or for worse, I had.

Vampires were in books, movies, and on TV, but I’d never believed they were real. Still, it hadn’t been hard to figure out what had happened to me. Dealing with it was another story. It had taken several almost disastrous mishaps–going for a walk in the bright sunshine had been particularly painful–to convince me. Now, the cloudy New England days that had been the bane of my existence provided my only semblance of a normal life.

Predictably, I felt better once night fell. I waited until my mom had been asleep for a while before I dressed, pulling on the same pair of jeans I’d worn earlier and a sweater over a fresh T-shirt. My hiking boots completed the practical outfit. I liked practical, especially for hunting.

Sliding open my window, I climbed out on the ledge. I crouched there for a moment before ducking to slip through the small opening, inhaling the crisp fall air. I shut my eyes, letting my senses stretch out, getting in tune with the night. No one was around. I couldn’t fly, at least not yet, but I could slow my fall, which allowed me to jump lightly to the ground out of a third-floor bedroom window.

I stalked out into the night, ravenous. Unable to resist the hunger, I allowed it to drive me, guide me to prey. Tonight, as with most nights, I headed to the next town over. It was less likely I would run into anyone who knew me.

There were bars in the college town, and bars meant easy prey, even for someone underage. Mind control allowed me to get in, and I wouldn’t stand out among the other young patrons.

I started to run, faster in death, or undeath, than anyone alive. My new speed was one of the few advantages to being a vampire, especially since I couldn’t take my Jeep. It was more likely I’d get caught if I took it, since Mom would notice its absence if she got up at night.

The ground sped past and trees flashed by; their shadows unable to hide their mysteries from my sharp eyes. The night sounds–laughter here, the snap of a twig over there–and smells assaulted my senses. The extra senses had been the hardest thing to get used to: the extra perception. Well, that and having to drink blood.

Both revolted and enraptured, I pondered what I was about to do, drinking someone’s blood, taking away a little bit of their life to sustain my own. I wasn’t a killer. I couldn’t bring myself to go that far and saw no reason to. The alcohol in their blood didn’t affect me, and it did half the work for me. Their intoxicated brains gave my new mind control powers enough of an edge that I could make them forget.

The power made me feel strong and dangerous, but it also sent shivers of terror through me. What if I wasn’t strong enough to control it? What would happen?

Loud country music and the reek of stale beer hit me as I flashed my ID at the bouncer, batted my eyes, and tweaked his brain. He nodded and waved me into the crowded bar. I pushed into the tightly packed mass of humanity and started hunting for likely prey. A small dance floor took up space in the back, and several giggling women were trying to line dance.

I needed someone male, alone, and drunk for this to work properly in my head. Getting that close to a girl was something I couldn’t yet bring myself to do. I spotted a potential subject in the back. He appeared to be in his early twenties, cute, and drinking heavily. I started his way and jumped when a hand touched my shoulder. Some cool huntress of the night I was.

“Yes?” I turned to face the owner of the hand. Young enough to still be in college, he had dark brown hair and eyes, and a nice tan. His winning smile made me feel butterflies all the way down to my toes.

“I’ve seen you in here before. I’m Gary.”

He smiled again, apparently trying to be friendly, but he wasn’t drunk enough to suit my needs.

“Hi. I’m Bridget.” I didn’t want to give him my real name. I did smile back, unable to resist his grin.

Then what he said clicked. He’d seen me in here before. Damn. Sloppy. It looked like I wasn’t going to find dinner here tonight.

“Can I buy you a drink?”

I improvised. “No, thanks. I was looking for someone, and she isn’t here. I need to get going.”

“Maybe next time?”

“Maybe. It was nice to meet you.” I headed for the door, watching Gary out of the corner of my eye. He went over to a table with a couple other guys his age and gestured once at me before shrugging.

I put them out of my mind, hunger driving me to the sports bar and my next meal.
