1. SCARECROWS! SUMNER,WA, AUTUMN FEST

After we finished at the pumpkin patch, we drove over to Sumner for their Autumn Fest. We had so much fun. My family (those that went with me this yr.) said this was one of the funnest days they had as a family. Hmm, so next yr. no big trips like we had this summer to Hawaii. LOL Isn't it funny kids don't need all those expensive things in life to be happy. Just good ole family fun time.
When we arrived in Sumner, they had scarecrows everywhere! Real ones too. They were living statues in the stores, like the staircase in this furniture store. They were also up and down the street like part of the city decor. Then they would also perform dances in the middle of the street. We so enjoyed these fun scarecrows.

2. Fun Idea For Kids

My kids always want me to do the summer activities we did years ago when we were too poor to go anywhere. It was when my husband went back to school to get more education. This meant he was gone from 5:30 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. five days a week, for 3  1/2 years. It has paid off, but it was a hard time, physically, mentally, and fianacially.

So I thought I would share some of the ideas that helped make summers fun.

The first  day of  of summer was getting a BIG box. (Free)

2nd day, we would decorate our "summer box". Use wrapping paper, newspaper, or just paint it. But!!!! Mom's are not allowed to help in the creativity. Use scrapbook things to help decorate. Dollar stores are a great place for these things.

3rd day, we would start filling it with crayons, paper, scissors, yarn, glue, paints, clay, side walk chalk, paint brushes, any and all things to be used for our summer activies.

4th day, we would walk or drive to a grocery store do some shopping. Ask for the brown paper bags. These are the most wonderful things you can have stashed in your box for projects. I will share some of these projects as we go along. Always ASK for extra's every time you go!

5th day, collect and decorate little boxes, shoe boxes, cans, etc. to put the smaller items in, (like pencils, chalk, erasers, clips, etc) to keep the "summer box" organized.

Now let the kids know everyday Mon.- Friday  there will be a project you will be doing. You will be surprised how that one little thing everyday gives the kids a sense anticipation for the next days activity.

Come back weekly, and I will have 5 more days of things to do, links, etc.

3. Dilemma about 'Will's Excellent Adventure'

There is nothing like being in a school library before school starts.
Teachers start coming in, long before their contracts start, to set up their rooms and begin planning for the year to come. Even though the librarians start work a week before the teachers, there is precious little time to work for the library itself which is why I found myself cataloging a load of new material for a very busy librarian at an elementary school this week.

The librarian at this school runs a fun "Books to Movies" reading club every year. She was telling me of her plans to use The Dark is Rising as her first book in conjunction with the movie The Seeker: The Dark is Rising, aka Will's Excellent Adventure, when it comes out.

Wow, have you heard about the brouhaha surrounding the movie I ask?

I ended up feeling badly because she is now pondering using another book to start the year. I don't think she has read the story yet so I told her not to decide until she had.

The club is really popular so it would be a chance for lots of kids to experience Cooper's work. Maybe learning that the movies are not faithful conveyors of a beloved story is a good thing to teach kids.
Maybe it is not so bad to reward feckless studios who are counting on librarians to promote their offerings in scenarios just like this one?
Maybe the movie is going to be so alien from the storyline that it will not spoil the book for them.

What do you think?
