3. Watch the Book!

Book trailers are popping up everywhere and the best of them are going viral before the book even comes out.

The goal is to launch a book. But along the way, book videos have become entertainment in themselves and, in some cases, are as anticipated as the book itself.

One of my favorites, originally titled Stokebird: The Invention, went on to win the Chicago International Children's Film Festival for best animated short.

It's based on Wouter Van Reek's picture book, Coppernickel: The Invention, about two best friends who try to invent a machine for picking high-hanging berries.

Book trailers appeal to publishers because they spread themselves -- anyone can stop by YouTube to embed them on their web page -- and a number of educators find they spur some reluctant readers to crack a book.

Consider this trailer for National Book Award winner M.T. Anderson's fourth book in the adventure series, Pals in Peril: Jasper Dash and the Flame-Pits of Delaware.

A boy technonaut Jasper and his friends try to stop a crime spree in the state of Delaware, which has been cut off from the civilized world by prohibitive interstate tolls. (Simon & Schuster) View the trailer here.

Today book trailers flood not only YouTube, but MySpace and iFilm, vying for our attention. The best of them grab us in the first scene, and within one to three minutes, motivate us to race out and read more.

They not only summarize the story but connect us with the emotion of what's going on.

One of the most popular formats is to move illustrated pages across the screen or having them fade in and out, as music plays in the background or a narrator summarizes the story.

In another video, Newbery Medalist Neil Gaiman reads from his 2010 picture book Instructions, and you just want to play it over and over.

His gentle voice inspires everything he says, as magical pictures by Charles Vess sail across the screen. (HarperCollins) View the trailer here.

Other trailers feel almost cinematic. Take the trailer for Margie Palatini and Barry Mouser's Lousy Rotten Stinkin' Grapes.

4. 2 Chicks Chat ... LINGER

Myra McEntire and I (MG Buehrlen) are starting a new feature at YABC called 2 Chicks Chat, where we let you in on our (embarrassingly candid) discussions regarding the latest in YA lit.

Our first installment?

A she said/she said review of Maggie Stiefvater's LINGER.

*Warning* This review contains mild spoilers and a blatant disregard for punctuation.

Here's a snippet to get you started, then click on the "read more" link below to continue to the full chat transcript.

~Let’s start with Sam and Grace~

Myra: I think it was nice to see an established, obviously committed-for-the-long-haul couple in YA in juxtaposition to a HOT NEW whatever it was with Isabel and Cole

MG:  Yes, I really enjoyed seeing Sam and Grace in an established place and seeing th

5. The LINGER Fan Art Contest Rules - Plus One

Hello!

Most of you already know, I work for Borders in Glendale, CA.

Some of you already know that Maggie Stiefvater, author of Shiver, Lament, and Ballad; musician, artist, mom, and author extraordinaire, will be at my store at 7 pm on Monday, July 26th to sign Linger, the 2nd book in her series, The Wolves of Mercy Falls.

Did you know we're holding a contest? :D

We are so excited about the event that we are inviting you, O creative Shiver Fans, to enter a contest to win fabulous prizes (consisting of signed copies of Maggie's books) - by entering a fan art contest based on The Wolves of Mercy Falls. Prizes will be provided by Borders Glendale management. No purchase necessary! (But you *do* have to put some thought into your entry... we're asking Maggie to select the winners!)

What do you have to do? Anything creative expressing your love of SHIVER -- you can paint a picture, sing a song, design a shirt--what the heck, bake a cake. Surprise us! Read the book, think about something cool and amazing and just do it. If your entry involves a performance, you can either pre-record it or perform at the signing.

Deadline 1: Fill out this form to submit your contact information by the end of the day on July 19, 2010. The information is available only to me and my manager, and will not be used for anything other than to contact you about your contest entry. This is so that we can figure out how much space/time your entry will need, and whether we need any equipment (for example, a TV and DVD player to play a short film, a mic for a song or poem, or an easel for a painting/drawing, etc.) in order to properly display your contest entry.

Deadline 2: The signing starts at 7 pm on Monday, July 26, so all entries that are not a) perishable or b) live performances must be present and on display no later than 6:30 pm. If you need to make arrangements to bring in your entry prior to that time, well, that's what the form in Deadline 1 is all about.

The Rules:

1. No purchase necessary, but you and your fan art entry must be present at the Maggie Stiefvater signing at 7 pm on Monday, July 26, 2010, at Borders Glendale, in order to win!

2. Be creative, and theme your art around SHIVER and THE WOLVES OF MERCY FALLS, but please do not plagiarize.

3. All entries must be appropriate for an all-ages audience.

4. One entry per person.

5. To enter, fill out this form by July 19, 2010 and bring your entry to the signing location by 6:30 pm on Monday, July 26, 2010.

6. There will be three (3) winners selected by a judge.

First Prize: signed copies of Shiver (1 copy), Linger (1 copy), Lament (1 copy) & Ballad (1 copy)

Second Prize: signed copies of Shiver (1 copy) & Linger (1 copy)

Third Prize: signed copy of Linger (1 copy)

If anyone wants full legalese on the contest, email me and I will draft a more precise but probably unreadable version of the rules.

To recap:

A. Love Shiver. Want Linger.

B. Make something cool.

C. Bring it to the signing.

D. Hope you win!

If you have que

6. ARCs, blogs and books

Tomorrow we leave on vacation, for eleven days in the Carolinas. I am so looking forward to this. First thing I packed? Books. Of course. And my luck dragon's coming too!

Funny thing is, I won this Kindle a while back. I've downloaded a few things on it, but for me, nothing compares to curling up with a paper book. I love being able to open to a specific page and reread a passage. I've taken to marking sections that evoke a certain emotion with little post-it notes, as reminders that this author is worth studying.

And how is an author supposed to sign your book if it's digital? Yes, I'm geeky, but I had a lot of fun meeting authors last summer at SCBWI and having them sign my books. Then there's the fact that you can't download an ARC, and I do love reading those advance copies that I'm lucky enough to encounter.

Like this one.

Yeah. I went into the Book Loft yesterday and this was waiting for me. I love the people at the Book Loft. LOVE. Here's the funny thing: six months ago Echo, the woman who works in the children's section, hadn't read Shiver. But I had, based on a blogger's recommendation. I told her in glowing terms why she needed to read that book. Last week when I visited the Book Loft, I had to smile when I heard her hand selling the book to a teenager. I jumped in with my two cents as well. So of course the girl went home with the book in her hand. And this month in the store's newsletter, Echo featured YA and one of the books she highlighted was Shiver.

This is the power of blogging.

It isn't always quantifiable. But I'd say more than half of the books I buy are based on blogger recommendations. And I'm not alone. That one blogger (thank you Myra!) probably convinced a lot of other people besides me to buy the book. And they're telling two friends. And they're telling two friends. And so on, and so on...

If someone tries to tell you what you're writing about on your blog isn't important, don't listen to them. Even if you only have a few followers, even if you just post once in a while, your words are important. They make an impact. So take yourself seriously. Your words matter.

I'll be checking your blogs every in every once in a while, but I won't be posting again until I'm back home so everybody have a great week and a half while I'm gone!

And may the luck of the dragon be with you :)
