1. Animal Wednesday: 100 on the cuteness meter!

I was on my way to Tiverton the other day to drop off more paintings and cards to the gallery when I decided to go down a side road to look for photo opportunities.
Look who I found!

He's such a short, stocky little guy and soooo friendly!! He wasn't camera shy at all.

This is his beautiful friend. She was protective of her little guy ;)

Awwwwww! 100% on the cuteness meter!

Rhode island has many beautiful marshes. I took this shot to hopefully use for a painting one day soon. I'd love to live in one of those houses and have this quiet view.
I

2. Truth in Journalism: A Video

A few weeks ago I had the honor of attending BEA2010 (no not the BEA happening this week) which was part of the 2010NAB conference.  I was there to celebrate the launch of the BBC College of Journalism Website (COJO) a collaboration between OUP and the BBC.  The site allows citizens outside of the UK access to the online learning and development materials created for BBC journalists.  It is a vast resource filled to the brim with videos, audio clips, discussion pages, interactive modules and text pages covering every aspect of TV, radio, and online journalism.  At the conference I had a chance to talk with Kevin Marsh, the Executive Editor of COJO, and I will be sharing clips from our conversation for the next few weeks.  To start us off I have posted a clip which emphasizes the value of truth in journalism.  Read Kevin’s blog here.

3. Skywatch Friday: Early Autumn in Rhode island

This is my first Autumn back in New England after being in Calif for 16 years.
I'll come back to this spot many times as the leaves start to turn their vibrant oranges, reds and golds.

Days like this don't get any better! Happy Skywatch Friday everyone.

Please go here to see more pretty pictures ;)

4. Illustration Friday: Pattern

For those of you who know my art you know that pattern is ever-present in nearly everything I draw or paint. I was going to show all of the past images that I did on patterned paper, but I chose instead to show two paintings I did with cloud patterns. One is in the west and one is here on the east coast.

I loved the rolling golden hills of California with the clouds and trees casting shadow patterns in subtle shades of blue and violet.

Now that I'm back in Rhode Island I get to see the change of seasons again. I love the marshes here, each with their own signifcant pattern. As the temperatures fall the grasses change color just as the leaves on the trees would.
The gold and amber striations make yet another pattern where there used to be lush green. Everywhere we look we see patterns in nature. To me, that's a perfect world and I try to savor every moment of it.

6. Shorts

Back in Manila, when I was about 13 years old, I used to have a crush on my mom's boss' son. He was about 17 years old and was soooo cute. His name was Marsh. I used to die just looking at him, especially during that time when the long board shorts (with large flower prints) were the coolest thing :) He was just so refreshing to look at :)

7. Celebrate Canadian Children’s Book Week

It’s Canadian Children’s Book Week. A week of bookish celebration. And it’s not limited to people within Canada; it would be lovely if other people also pick up a Canadian children’s book and read it. There are some fantastic Canadian children’s authors (and books). Here are a few of my favorites (though there are many more). If you haven’t read them, I suggest you pick yourself up a copy:

Picture Books
Imagine a Day by Sarah L. Thomson, illustrated by Rob Gonsalves
Oliver Has Something to Say! by Pamela Edwards, illustrated by Louis Pilon
Chester by Melanie Watt
Middle Grade Books
From Anna by Jean Little
Julie by Cora Taylor
Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang by Mordecai Richler
YA/Teen Books
True Confessions of a Heartless Girl by Martha Brooks
Adam and Eve and Pinch-Me by Julie Johnston
The Watcher (The Watcher’s Quest) by Margaret Buffie

Tough City Writer has some beautiful, inspiring wishes for the week (or year) that she hopes you will do, including:

Wish #1: Go to your bookshelf (or your kids’) and dust off a Canadian classic you’ve been wanting to re-read. You know, Jacob Two-Two, Jelly Belly, even Anne of Green Gables would make me happy. (I know, I know, “classic” is subjective. Make your own criteria and go for it.)

Wish #2: Send book from Wish #1 to a child you love. Or even one you don’t love, or even one you don’t know. Tell them, “Hey, a Canadian wrote this book, ya know? And I think you might just like it.”

Wish #3: Find a Canadian author or illustrator you have never heard of and check out their bio and their books. The Canadian Children’s Book Centre, The Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators and Performers (CANSCAIP), and, in BC, the Children’s Writers and Illustrators of BC (CWILL-BC), have wonderful links to Canadian authors and illustrators.

Want to read the rest of her wishes, and those from visitors? Check out the post on her blog.

The wish that I would add is would be that people post a blurb, review, or interview about a Canadian children’s author or illustrator or one of their books that they love. Help get the word out about good Canadian children’s fiction. And it doesn’t have to be this week. It can be any time throughout the year.

Thank you to BookLust for the link.
