1. Missing CD

I'm looking for Libby Donovan, who won an audio version of On the Road to Mr. Mineo's back in October.

Today I found CD #3 in my car and I'm hoping it wasn't missing from what you received.

If so, please contact me.

If anybody reading this knows Libby, will you please give her a head's up?

5. On the Road to Mr. Mineo's - Reviews

Some reviews of On the Road to Mr. Mineo's

From Horn Book:
"With total authorial control, O'Connor brings it all together, first creating a quiet, satisfying adventure and then an apt conclusion for peaceful, laid back Meadville. Here it is the subtlety of character and setting, rather than action, that rules the roost."  --Betty Carter

 From Kirkus:
O'Connor weaves the fabric of her tale from each of these separate threads, moving back and forth among points of view, sympathetic to nearly all (except Levi and company). As in The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis (2009), she condenses long summer days down into their essence, quiet but humming with an undercurrent of childhood energy

From Publishers Weekly:
O'Connor's understated third-person narration moves languidly among the children (and some adults) in town - including Mr. Mineo, the homing pigeon's actual owner - in a story that beautifully captures the feel of a small Southern town and its residents.

From Book Page:
"...a gem of a story...Barbara O'Connor's gift in storytelling is her restraint. Holding back allows the reader to fill in a bit, making the story more personal. Her talents make On the Road to Mr. Mineo's an unforgettable trip."  --Robin Smith

And some blog and other reviews:

16. Book Trailers for Dummies

I've been making book trailers for 4 years now.

Mine are simple.

No bells or whistles.

Just photos, music, and script.

My first one was Greetings from Nowhere:

Then The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis:

Then The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester:

I'm currently working on one for my October release of On the Road to Mr. Mineo's.

Here are the steps to a VERY basic book trailer:

1. Find photos. I use iStock Photo. They always have great photos that fit my story. I download the small size. Each photo costs a certain number of "credits." The credits needed for this trailer cost about $180.  I also sometimes use this site.

2. Find music. This is fun. You want the music, of course, to fit the tone of the book. I use Premium Beat because they have a good variety and are inexpensive. I bought the music for $30.

3. For this trailer, I also added one short video clip, purchased from iStock Photo for $20.

4. Write the "script."

5. I use iMovie. Easy peasy. Literally drag the photos and music into the project. Add transitions, etc.

6. I spent 5432 hours tweaking it.

7. Try to keep it to no more than 2 minutes.

8. Publish to YouTube, Teacher Tube and/or Vimeo.

9. Spread the word online.

DONE

21. Copyeditors

Coming October 2012
Copyediting is the one stage in the publishing process that always annoys fascinates me. How do those people (copyeditors) DO it? They find the most amazing things.

For instance, there's a scene in On the Road to Mr. Mineo's in which an old car is breaking down.

On one page, there is the following:
Edsel turned the key.
Whirrrrrrr clunk clunk

On the next page:
He turned the key one more time.
Whirrrrrrrr clunk clunk

The copyeditor actually caught the fact that the second Whirrrrrrrr had an extra "r."

Then, on page 29, there is the following:
And something had been making holes in the dry red dirt under the old pig trough.

But on page 119 (that's, um, 90 pages later!):
And out by the Ropers' barn, the little brown dog sat in the rain beside the empty pigsty and howled.

The suggestion was to change to old pig trough for consistency.

Okay, now I'm tired of copyediting. I'm gonna go check Facebook.

22. Things I Love Thursday

My grandfather

  • He was a mechanic. He worked on cars wearing a crisp white uniform and a cool hat.
  • My grandmother called him "Mutt." I have no idea why. (But there is a character in my forthcoming novel, On the Road to Mr. Mineo's, named Mutt in his honor.)
  • He had a big, big, big garden (or at least it seemed big to a little girl).
  • He grew peanuts in that garden. My grandmother kept a pot of them boiling on the back of the stove at all times.
  • He always kept a pair of pliers in his pocket and threatened to pinch our noses with them.
  • He filled a deserted chicken coop with sand for my sister and cousins and I to play in.
  • Every day he took a nap in a mysterious room called a "sleeping porch." No one was allowed to enter that room but him. (So, of course, we all did.)
  • He grew fig trees and had little concrete chicks that marched through the yard.
  • He always wore a hat and his pants too high.

24. Things I Love Thursday

Advanced reader copies of

On the Road to Mr. Mineo's!

The back cover reads:

"An intricate Chinese puzzle box of a book." --Kirby Larson, author of the Newbery Honor Book Hattie Big Sky

Stella wants a dog, but her parents won't let her have one. So when she spots a one-legged pigeon on the top of her best friend Gerald's garage, she decides it's the next best thing and convinces Gerald to help her try to catch it.

But too bad for Stella and Gerald, because they're not the only ones who want that pigeon. Stella's brother Levi and his scabby-kneed, germ-infested friends saw it flying around town, too, and Levi says finders keepers.

And Mutt Raynard, the town liar, told the truth for once, and now he needs to catch the pigeon to prove it.

It seems like all of Meadville, South Carolina, are caught up in the bird chase--but what they don't know is that the pigeon already has a home way across town.

Barbara O'Connor has delivered another ingeniously crafted story full of Southern charm, kid-sized adventures, and quirky, unforgettable characters.

25. Rythm revisited

Kids in schools often ask me why the pigeon in On the Road to Mr. Mineo's only has one leg.

The honest answer?

I needed something for the rhythm.

One-legged pigeon had the right rhythm.
