Shortlisted titles for the 2010 BC Book Prizes were announced last week, and we were thrilled to see that Inferno by Robin Stevenson has been named a finalist for the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize, awarded to novels, chapter books and nonfiction books for children and young adults. Robin was also a finalist for this award and the Governor General’s Literary Award in 2009 for A Thousand Shades of Blue.
We were also happy to discover many Orca alumni nominated for awards: Sylvia Olsen, Carrie Mac and Kristin Butcher are also up for the Children’s Literature Prize; Frieda Wishinsky, Dean Griffiths and Kari-Lynn Winters are nominated for the Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize.
BC Book Prize winners will be announced at Government House in Victoria on April 24, 2010, at the Lieutenant Governor’s BC Book Prize Gala.
Congratulations to all the shortlisted authors and publishers!

Last week a handful of Orca authors participated in Book Splash 2008. The event was organized by the Orca Coast Literature Festival Society (OCLFS), a registered non-profit organization whose primary goals are to provide literary events for members of the community and to increase awareness of the literary talent we have in Canada. OCLFS invited the authors to go to schools to talk about how to write. “The whole point is to get kids excited about reading,” said Hayes, one of the members of the OCLFS. “Our thought is if they meet an author, it just makes it more real.”
The authors involved were Rachel Dunstan Muller, Jacqueline Pearce, Andrea Spalding, Robin Stevenson and Don Trembath.
For more detailed information about the event and the authors read the article at the Cowichan News Leader and Pictorial.
