1. Books in Homes Taking 1 Million Books to Kids

Hokey pokey published Scholastic AustraliaLove the committee meetings where we select great books for disadvantaged and indigenous kids across Western Sydney, the Outback Northern Territory.

Andrew Berhut MD of Scholastic singing Hokey Pokey in tune with a new title was hilarious. Hokey Pokey is on the list of books that children can chose for their very own. Andrew really supports his books!

Gillian Maugle represents school librarians on the committee and is fabulous.

As a Role Model I’ll be presenting at the Assembly for Books in Homes, to Curran Public School Macquarie Fields in Western Sydney on 18th June – looking forward to it.

13. Where’s Dr Frederick Harrison Quaife?

Greg Riley, the psychic who won THE ONE and who always stays at The Hughenden was on a mission to discover The Hughenden stories.

He found Dr Harrison Quaife who brought the first x-ray to the colony  and was a founding father of the British Medical Association and Astronomical Association in Australia.

The Morning Show on Channel 7 was filming Greg and the Australian Paranormal Phenomenon Investigator team as they investigated.

Fred (as the cheeky media personality Todd McKenny called him – Todd’s always a joker) – was much loved, like his father Barzillai Quaife – Australia’s first philosopher.

Fred and Barzillai both lived on Queen Street Woollahra in Sydney and influenced what Australia would become.

Barzillai Quaife wrote:-

‘Men may be foreigners but they are

men. They may be uncivilised but they

are yet men. They may be savages

but they still are men. One nation may

not oppress another. The natural rights

of man are universally the same ….” Barzillai Quaife 1872

17. Thankyou Australia -Prof Marie Bashir, Sir Nicholas Shehadie at Government House for my OAM

Family with Sir Nicholas Shehadie, OAM award Parliament House SydneyGovernment House Sydney, gardens, OAM for Susanne Gervay, Professor Marie BashirThe sun was shining, Government House was a gracious reminder of the past, the gardens flowering for the investiture of Australians for their contributions to Australia.

We sat in the sumptuous sitting room, as guests gathered for the ceremony. It was inspiring to hear the contribution of so many awarded decorations for courage, extraordinary services in fields as varied as medical, business, government, social justice …. and of course my very special Order of Australia (OAM) for children’s literature and professional organisations.

My wonderful children were there which made it doubly special.

Thankyou to my friends who sent me letters, emails, gifts.

Thankyou to the organisations who are part of my life that supported this award – Room to Read, The NSW Writers Centre, SCBWI, CBCA, MonkeyBaa Theatre and many others.

It was a time where I reflected on my parents’ journey as refugees to Australia. I know they were there with me. We had lunch at 21 Double Bay where my father took me as a girl to share Hungarian dishes, laugh and share stories.

I carried a private momento of my parents with me today.

21. Terrible Earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand,Floods Queensland, Fires Victoria-SCBWI Australia & NZ

The terrible loss of life, injuries to survivors, destruction of homes, wildlife, property makes us try to come to grips with the power of Mother Nature.

While I enjoy beautiful Florida and am participating in the SCBWI Conference here, the USA news blares live shots of the 150 mile long and 50 mile wide crack in the earth that has torn Japan apart.

The Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators SCBWI with its 23,000  children’s writers & illustrators worldwide send their support. Organising the HOPE CARDS for the kids of the Victorian Bushfires with original illustrations and words of hope for the future was one small expression of care.

SCBWI authors and illustrators from around the world donated their works, which now hang in the newly rebuilt Marysville School in Victoria, Australia. The town including the school, was destroyed in the fires.

Currently, I am working with Norman Jorgenson award winning SCBWI author from Perth, to send $20,000 worth of new books to schools impacted by these new natural disasters.

Love to SCBWI New Zealand with special thoughts to SCBWI NZ led by literary agent Frances Plumpton and to SCBWI Japan led by author Holly Thompson.

May the books we write and illustrate bring some warmth to the kids and families of these disasters.

22. Taking SCBWI to Demilitarized Zone DMZ North and South Korea

We’ve been ordered – no torn jeans (Frane has a hole in hers), no cameras (I didn’t hear), no pointing(a guard shouted at a pointing idiot), no kidding – Frane and I are heading for DMZ – the demilitarised Zone between North and South Korea.

Mission: Stand in North Korea and don’t get shot.

The wonderful hosts of Nami Island have organised this tour to the DMZ. We’re with Beaky and Hopper- who are holding the SCWBI, Aussie and South Korean flag. (Hint they are furry Aussie icons).

Frane of course asked a guard in dark sunglasses with a gun if she could have a photo with him – NO!!!!!!!  Good News – Frane wasn’t killed.

We stood on North Korean land in the one building that crosses both countries. It was very strained and Frane and I had to sign that we were OK if we were shot. We signed. Weren’t shot.

The story of the young woman who defected brought Frane and I to tears. She can’t contact her family – swam across the river, paid so much to eb guided to China, where the man sold her into the sex trade. She escaped after 2 years and South Korea is home now.

Bologna Book Fair 2010: SCBWI BoothThe last booth Aline, Marjorie and I visited at the 2010 Bologna Book Fair belonged to the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and what a way to end the fair!  We had an absolute blast visiting with the SCBWI members, some of whom we had corresponded with via email before but had never met in person: and we were in for a couple of surprises too.  SCBWI members not only share the same passion for children’s literature as we do at PaperTigers but in two cases share the same first name!  Here’s a special shout out about several of the SCBWI members who made us feel so welcome and took the time to share their work with us.

Bologna Children's Book Fair 2010: Marjorie (PaperTigers) and Marjorie van Heerden (SCBWI South Africa) PaperTigers’ Marjorie (in green) with Marjorie van Heerden, co-Regional Advisor SCBWI South Africa.

Marjorie van Heerden has written and/or illustrated more than 100 children’s books and has been published in 33 languages in Africa, Europe, Canada and the USA.  In 2008 Marjorie won the M.E.R Award for best South African illustrated children’s book.

24. Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) September Events

With over 22,000 members worldwide in over 70 regions, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is the largest children’s writing organization in the world and acts as a network for the exchange of knowledge between all those involved with literature for young people. Twice a year the SCBWI brings together top professionals to share their knowledge at the annual Summer and Winter conferences. Each month regional chapters sponsor or organize events around the globe and often times these events are open to both members and non-members. (Some of the events are included on our PaperTigers’ Calendar of Events but you can click here to see the full list.) If an event catches your eye, contact a Regional Advisor for more information. Whether you are already established in the children’s industry, just starting to enter the world of children’s book writing and illustrating, or simply have a passion for children’s literature, I’m sure you will find a warm welcome.

Here are a few highlights in Septemeber:

This event is not sponsored by SCBWI but Jenny Desmond-Walters, Regional Advisor for SCBWI Korea found out about it and was kind enough to forward the information. If Jenny is able to attend I’m sure she’ll send us some photos. Stay tuned. Thanks Jenny!
