Starting with the Three Wise Writers – Nathan Luff, Deborah Abela, Wendy Blaxland – who came with ‘incense’ and song to the SCBWI Xmas Theatre sports.

It was a fabulous night of good food, good wine, good company of children’s writers and illustrators and publishers at The Hughenden Woollahra – and brilliant performances by Theatre Sports’ stars including:-

         It  was special to see Louise Schofield’s husband Graham who flew in from Perth to catch up and stay at The Hughenden Hotel in Sydney.

We shared the joy of Louise living in the beautiful bush overlooking the dam and gardens, just outside Perth.

She loved their muscovy duck BALDRICK.

She loved writing and the Australian bush.

Author of 10 books including ‘Secrets of the Tingle Forest’ which won the WA Young Readers Book Award.

it has been a year since she lost the battle with cancer, but she’s always part of the Society of Book Writers & Illustrators Community SCBWI.

The 1st Louise Schofield for Outstanding Services to SCBWI WA was awarded to author Meg McKinlay.

It was packed with SCBWI authors, illustrators and librarians as everyone shared their children’s book news.

Jenny Stubbs the Director of the Story Arts Festival Ipswich, Book Links and Ipswich District Teacher Librarian Network shared  festival information and ideas from Romancing the Stars of children’s books to the brilliant CBCA Readers’ Cup for the kids of Queensland.

 Valerie Khoo Director of the Sydney Writers Centre was inspiring. Her generosity in sharing how writers reach their audiences through social media and creating a successful career was fantastic.

Hundreds of people poured into the Hughenden to open this celebration of the community of children’s writers and illustrators.

The wonderful Dianne Wolfer has headed SCBWI Western Australia and Northern territory for 6 amazing years.

She has lead growth of memberships, run conferences, enthused our West and promoted the community of children’s writers & illustrators.

Frane Lessac SCBWI Illustrator Coordinator has partnered her in this  - so many WA authors and illustrators have become published, award winning authors and illustrators and have travelled throughout the West on speaking tours, conferences and festivals.

Dianne is still very much a part of the SCBWI committee . However she’s now doing her Phd and writing more books. 

Frane Lessac, award winning picture book writer and illustrator is the new leader – the RA SCBWI Australia West – taking back her old role.

James Foley Crystal Kite winner for ‘The Last Viking’ is taking Frane’s place as Illustrator Coordinator.

Award winning novellist and picture book writer Meg McInlay is the ARA – assistant regional advisor.

Greg Riley, the psychic who won THE ONE and who always stays at The Hughenden was on a mission to discover The Hughenden stories.

He found Dr Harrison Quaife who brought the first x-ray to the colony  and was a founding father of the British Medical Association and Astronomical Association in Australia.

The Morning Show on Channel 7 was filming Greg and the Australian Paranormal Phenomenon Investigator team as they investigated.

Fred (as the cheeky media personality Todd McKenny called him – Todd’s always a joker) – was much loved, like his father Barzillai Quaife – Australia’s first philosopher.

Fred and Barzillai both lived on Queen Street Woollahra in Sydney and influenced what Australia would become.

Barzillai Quaife wrote:-

The sun was shining, Government House was a gracious reminder of the past, the gardens flowering for the investiture of Australians for their contributions to Australia.

We sat in the sumptuous sitting room, as guests gathered for the ceremony. It was inspiring to hear the contribution of so many awarded decorations for courage, extraordinary services in fields as varied as medical, business, government, social justice …. and of course my very special Order of Australia (OAM) for children’s literature and professional organisations.

My wonderful children were there which made it doubly special.

Thankyou to my friends who sent me letters, emails, gifts.

Thankyou to the organisations who are part of my life that supported this award – Room to Read, The NSW Writers Centre, SCBWI, CBCA, MonkeyBaa Theatre and many others.

It was a time where I reflected on my parents’ journey as refugees to Australia. I know they were there with me. We had lunch at 21 Double Bay where my father took me as a girl to share Hungarian dishes, laugh and share stories.

I carried a private momento of my parents with me today.

Thankyou for the gift of your congratulations from the writing community and friends all over the world and those who love  JACK.

While I enjoy beautiful Florida and am participating in the SCBWI Conference here, the USA news blares live shots of the 150 mile long and 50 mile wide crack in the earth that has torn Japan apart. The Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators SCBWI with its 23,000  children’s writers & illustrators worldwide send their support. Organising the HOPE CARDS for the kids of the Victorian Bushfires with original illustrations and words of hope for the future was one small expression of care. SCBWI authors and illustrators from around the world donated their works, which now hang in the newly rebuilt Marysville School in Victoria, Australia. The town including the school, was destroyed in the fires. Currently, I am working with Norman Jorgenson award winning SCBWI author from Perth, to send $20,000 worth of new books to schools impacted by these new natural disasters. Love to SCBWI New Zealand with special thoughts to SCBWI NZ led by literary agent Frances Plumpton and to SCBWI Japan led by author Holly Thompson. Mission: Stand in North Korea and don’t get shot. The wonderful hosts of Nami Island have organised this tour to the DMZ. We’re with Beaky and Hopper- who are holding the SCWBI, Aussie and South Korean flag. (Hint they are furry Aussie icons).   Frane of course asked a guard in dark sunglasses with a gun if she could have a photo with him – NO!!!!!!!  Good News – Frane wasn’t killed. We stood on North Korean land in the one building that crosses both countries. It was very strained and Frane and I had to sign that we were OK if we were shot. We signed. Weren’t shot. The story of the young woman who defected brought Frane and I to tears. She can’t contact her family – swam across the river, paid so much to eb guided to China, where the man sold her into the sex trade. She escaped after 2 years and South Korea is home now. Marjorie van Heerden has written and/or illustrated more than 100 children’s books and has been published in 33 languages in Africa, Europe, Canada and the USA.  In 2008 Marjorie won the M.E.R Award for best South African illustrated children’s book. AUSTRALIA - Sunday the 20th - Breakfast with the Visiting SPRUNG Children’s Authors Share coffee and croissants with visiting children’s authors and illustrators then walk up the road to enjoy a range of sessions at the Albany SPRUNG Writers Festival. PHILIPPINES - Saturday the 26th - Children’s Book Seminar at the University of the Philippines, Visayas (City Campus) Regional Advisor Beaulah Pedregosa Taguiwalo tells me that this event will appeal to anyone published or aspiring to be a children’s book writer or illustrator. Korea - Thursday the 24th - Sunday the 25th The 6th Canadian Children’s Book Seminar at the Embassy of Canada located in Jeong-dong, Seoul. A few hundred children’s books from major Canadian publishing companies will be displayed. This event is not sponsored by SCBWI but Jenny Desmond-Walters, Regional Advisor for SCBWI Korea found out about it and was kind enough to forward the information.
