The October doldrums are past (where The Martian was the #1 movie for four of the past five weeks?!). Last weekend saw the double whammy of James Bond and Charlie Brown gain 76% of the weekend box office, and the total take of all movies to be 148% over the previous weekend’s cumulatives and 6% over this time last […]

Announced today via press release, Rob Schrab will be making his feature film directorial debut on the much-anticipated sequel to last year’s smash hit The Lego Movie.
The new film will be written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are stepping out of their directing duties for The Lego Movie Sequel, but they will be staying on as producers along with Roy Lee and Dan Lin.
Lord and Miller released a joint-statement on Schrab signing aboard:
We are so excited to collaborate with Rob. He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humor, bring a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this project. People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, ‘Of course!’
The sequel is one of three feature films that will be spinning out of The Lego Movie along with Ninjago, which hits September 23, 2016 and and an untitled Lego Batman film due out in May 2017. Animation Supervisor for The Lego Movie, Chris McKay, was originally supposed to helm The Lego Movie Sequel, but he instead will be directing the Lego Batman feature.
No date for The Lego Movie Sequel has been announced.

By Davey Nieves
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games and The LEGO Group announced Thursday their 2015 slate of LEGO videogames, including LEGO Jurassic World, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers, plus new handheld and mobile titles. Here’s the full rundown straight from Warner Bros Interactive.
The upcoming LEGO videogame titles are:
LEGO Jurassic World™
Following the epic storylines of Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, as well as the highly anticipated Jurassic World, LEGO Jurassic World is the first videogame where players will be able to relive and experience all four Jurassic films. The game will be available in June for the Xbox One, all-in-one games and entertainment system, the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system, the Wii U™ system from Nintendo, Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system, and Windows PC.
LEGO Marvel’s Avengers
Avengers Assemble! Experience the first console videogame featuring characters and storylines from the blockbuster film Marvel’s The Avengers and the much anticipated sequel Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and more. Play as the most powerful Super Heroes in their quest to save humanity. The game will be available in fall 2015 for the Xbox One, all-in-one games and entertainment system, the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system, the Wii U system from Nintendo, Nintendo 3DS hand-held system, and Windows PC.
LEGO Ninjago™: Shadow of Ronin™
The popular LEGO Ninjago franchise gets its most expansive adventure to date in LEGO Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin. The latest LEGO handheld game delivers an untold story of the LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu TV show. Using their Spinjitzu abilities, players can unleash their Ninja’s elemental power to smash their way through enemies and solve puzzles. Developed by TT Fusion, a subsidiary of TT Games, the game comes to the Nintendo 3DS handheld system and the PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system on March 24, 2015.
The LEGO Movie Videogame
The LEGO Movie Videogame for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch follows Emmet, an average, rule-following citizen, who is mistakenly identified as the key to saving the world. In the game, players guide Emmet as he is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared. With a delightful mix of over 90 characters from the feature film, including Batman, Superman and the Green Ninja, The LEGO Movie Videogame leads gamers on a journey through fantastical worlds in 45 exciting levels. Developed by TT Games, the mobile game is now available on the App Store.
LEGO Batman™: Beyond Gotham
In LEGO Batman: Beyond Gotham for mobile devices, the Caped Crusader joins forces with the Super Heroes of the DC Comics universe and blasts off to outer space to stop the evil Brainiac from destroying Earth. Players will unlock and play as their favorite DC Comics characters, including members of the Justice League and the Legion of Doom, and explore iconic locations such as the Hall of Justice, the Batcave and the Justice League Watchtower. Developed by TT Games, the mobile game will be available this summer.
Lego Jurassic World is scheduled for a June release in step with the film’s release while Lego Avengers could be the company’s November release. It appears that while the first Lego Marvel game focused more the entire comics universe, this new game will be more in tune with the Marvel MCU. It’s Lego so you can expect brick destruction and cuteness. We’ll have more on the game as news comes out leading to E3 in June.
What Lego games are you looking forward to in 2015?

This weekend, Disney’s "Frozen" became the highest grossing animated film of all time. Its $1.072 billion worldwide gross has surpassed the $1.063 billion of "Toy Story 3," which was the previous record-holder for biggest animated feature.

No new animated movies debuted in the United States this weekend, although Disney's family-oriented "Muppets Most Wanted" opened. The film opened in second place with a disappointing $16.5 million (estimated), far below the $29.2M opening of the franchise reboot "The Muppets" in 2011. That earlier film plummeted at the box office, too, after its opening, suggesting that the Muppets franchise isn't as popular with kids today as it was with earlier generations.

It's a special day for directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. Their film "Frozen" will win the Best Animated Feature Oscar on the day that it crosses $1 billion in global box office revenue. It becomes, along with "Toy Story 3," only the second animated feature to achieve this distinction, and the 18th film overall.

I don’t think there’s a multiplex big enough to beat 32 simultaneous screenings. For some time, the largest number of screens under one roof was 20, at Grand Rapids Michigan’s Studio 28 (so-named because of it’s location on 28th Street). This was at the height of the multiplex craze in the 1990s, when more was always better, before cinema attendance started to drop off. (There was talk of expanding to 28 screens – because obvious – but it never happened… and Studio 28 is now just a really big parking lot.) There’s probably a few bigger plexes out there somewhere, but I doubt anyone’s built one that much larger.
Yes… I did some basic research, and there doesn’t seem to be a 32-plex.
AMC does have the Empire 25 in Times Square. Many of the theaters on the top floor are smaller theaters, usually used for screenings and foreign films.
With regard to the 7/8/2016 date, noted as “??? (Was Doctor Strange)”: I believe that’s now held for the Ant-Man sequel, “ANT-MAN AND THE WASP,” the addition of which pushed the BLACK PANTHER and CAPTAIN MARVEL movies to these later-than-originally-announced dates.
Oops, got that wrong!
The Ant-Man sequel is for July 2018, not 2016! To the extent that the 7/8/2016 date may be a hole to be filled in the schedule, I’m not sure if any “nerd-friendly” flick will move to fill the space vacated by DOCTOR STRANGE, or if folks will cede July to things like GHOSTBUSTERS and STAR TREK that have staked out spaces later in that month.
