Today I am skipping PART TWO of this series until later in the week and instead I'm bringing you Part Three today. Today's video features the set of Winter Whimsy Drink Blots coasters I did with Studio M/Magnet Works! Take a peek. I share a couple of ideas for ways to use them, too. (They're the coolest and they are more than just coasters!)
Come back tomorrow for another cool Christmas treat!!

Hi all! I made a short video to share with you what's been going on lately! Clocks in at about 3:45. This is Part 1. There is Part 2, which I'll have for you SOON! It will have a few fun surprises so I look forward to sharing that with you as well.. Enjoy!
It was born from this website, which I wrote a letter for back in 2011. I was honored when I was asked to write a new letter for the anthology, which includes a bunch of extremely cool, interesting, and talented YA authors, who have had a variety of teenage experiences.
Here's the official description of the book:
Dear Teen Me includes advice from over 70 YA authors (including Lauren Oliver, Ellen Hopkins, and Nancy Holder, to name a few) to their teenage selves. The letters cover a wide range of topics, including physical abuse, body issues, bullying, friendship, love, and enough insecurities to fill an auditorium. So pick a page, and find out which of your favorite authors had a really bad first kiss? Who found true love at 18? Who wishes he’d had more fun in high school instead of studying so hard? Some authors write diary entries, some write letters, and a few graphic novelists turn their stories into visual art. And whether you hang out with the theater kids, the band geeks, the bad boys, the loners, the class presidents, the delinquents, the jocks, or the nerds, you’ll find friends--and a lot of familiar faces--in the course of Dear Teen Me. The Vlog: To celebrating the release, I put together a vlog--now, mind you, "put together" is a very loose term. Basically I used to crappy webcam and the Windows Movie Maker software on my computer, so please don't judge me too harshly. In it I talk briefly about why I participated in this project/why I write for teens in general and I share a short excerpt from my letter.
The Contest: It's not a party without presents!!! So I'm going to giveaway a copy of DEAR TEEN ME to one lucky winner. It will be signed by 4 to 5 Dear Teen Me contributors and come with bookmarks and postcards!
To enter all you have to do is leave a comment with your email address (so I can contact you if you win). Want extra entries? +1 for every time you tweet or share something on facebook about Dear Teen Me, could be my video, a link to this blog entry, a link to one of the other blogs on the Dear Teen Me blog tour, could just be your own thoughts on how awesome Dear Teen Me is.
Note your extra entries in your comment and enter as many times as you want before Friday, November 9th when I will be drawing my winner. This contest IS open internationally!

I've been following the Dear Teen Me project since it first came out publicly and it's been so, so inspiring reading about such personal experiences of the authors I look up to as my idols.
I cannot wait to own the collection.

See, besides this crazy blog, I also belong to EMU’s Debuts, which is even nuttier because it’s run by debut kidlit authors repped by the Erin Murphy Literary Agency. (Get it? Erin MUrphy?) And we’re one bizarre bunch. (C’mon, we named our blog after an Australian flightless bird. It’s worse than vegemite, mate.)
We did something today that took a lot of NERVE for the release of Jeanne Ryan’s YA debut!
If you can, please leave a comment (I realize that’s difficult while making the cuckoo-sign) because we’re hoping to get more comments than ANOTHER BLOG who DARED us to this challenge!

He sounds hot! And after listening to you, thinking about his dark curls, and his dark eyes, I am too….
Good luck with the dare! Be glad you didn’t get the interpretive dance (Which was amazing BTW).
Tara Lazar said, on 9/14/2012 8:31:00 AM
Well, he was really cute. (We didn’t use “hot” back then.) But I recently found a pic of him online. SO NOT the cute boy I remember. Glad it didn’t work out and I eventually met my husband, who is MUCH CUTER.
Ellen L. Ramsey said, on 9/14/2012 8:43:00 AM
Loved your video. If only that kid had been able to see your eyes as you talked about him, he would have been equally smitten! But sounds like you made a much better choice later on.
Joanne Fritz said, on 9/14/2012 8:49:00 AM
I don’t even know who the other blogger is that you’re up against, but hey, I hope you win. You look adorable talking to your high school crush — almost like you became your high school self for a moment there. Had to laugh at the “totally not my grandpa” comment. Har har!
Good luck, Tara! I’ve read Jeanne’s book, and these dares are much sweeter. That’s one intense book!
Mary Zisk said, on 9/14/2012 9:34:00 AM
I’ll have to save the videos to watch at home. In the meantime, I heard that the Emu and Kangaroo are on Australia’s seal because they cannot move backwards, always forward. So good luck to the EMUs who will always move forward!
Tara Lazar said, on 9/14/2012 9:46:00 AM
Mary, that’s great! I didn’t know that about emus, thanks!

I better leave a comment before you have to go streaking or whatever losing the dare may entail! Your videos are always amazing. You are going to be a school visit favorite.
I just got back from a FABULOUS 1st grade school visit! I was so excited about it that I immediately had to vlog.
While this isn’t my first vlog (that was for EMU’s Debuts), it is the debut vlog for this blog. If you want to start doing school visits as a pre-published author, this is the way to go about it. I think. *Warning: DO NOT APPEAR AS CRAZY AS I DO IN THIS VIDEO.*
Apologies for the ethereal lighting. I was sitting in my breakfast nook with the blinds opened. But I rather prefer the Cybill Shepherd “Moonlighting” look, don’t you, dahlings? (What, you don’t know what that means? Oh, you young whipper-snapper, go Google it.)
More apologies for the mirror writing. If I knew how to flip a video, I would. Anyone know? Help?!
Remember to leave me a comment about what we should name “vlogs” instead of “vvlawwwgz”. It’s an ugly word for an exciting medium.

LOVED this! First thought? “Wow, Tara’s voice is TOTALLY different than I thought.” And then my second thought was interrupted by my son walking in, asking who you were, and me saying, “Her name is Ms. Lazar, and she-”
Then him interruptig me again saying, “Wow. She’s kinda crazypants.” HA!
Okay, so I hate “Vlog”, too. Unfortunately, I am now too busy to help with changing the name because I am now laughing too hard at my ridiculous son and his adaptation of the word “Crazypants”.
Once again, you inspire even the smallest minds!

Chit-Chat-Log or ChChLog or maybe name it Cupcake, like my dog! Yay!
Yesterday was my little Tyler's first birthday. It felt as much of a celebration of us making it safely through one year of parenthood, as it did a celebration for him.
Although I started writing and illustrating children's books well before I had my own child, I can see why so many people are inspired by their own children to start creating. To be honest, part of me had felt (and feared) my creative life would be over once our baby arrived — due to time constraints as a mum — but now I feel I'm actually being refueled and inspired as I watch him grow and develop, as he takes each new step in his life journey, and exhibits his funny little quirks. And don't even get me started on the cuteness of his round head and chubby feet.
The journey as a parent is a fascinating one, full of highs and lows, laughs and frustrations and exhaustion. I created this video for Tyler, for us, and for family and friends near and far, to mark his first year. He has watched it about 20 times already as he dances along, and each time it ends, points to the computer and demands "a-deh!" ("again!").
I hope you enjoy meeting my little bunny rabbit...
I should have known better. When I received a mysterious email with a link to an unnamed video, I should have trashed the thing. It didn’t look like SPAM, but hackers are becoming more sophisticated these days and can transmit a virus quicker than a kindergarten class after a field trip to the consumption ward. Actually, I would have been lucky if it was just a virus. The link led to something far more insidious than that. It led to…
Well, let me start by reminding you that about a year ago I had a run-in with two of the most ruthless book critics on the circuit. You can read about it here. I have since recovered from the incident, but the video below has resurrected all those feelings: the fear, the shame, the hunger to eat a jar of peanut butter and a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips. The only thing I have done in the last 17 hours is sit by a window, sighing and watching the rain trickle down the glass. After watching this, you may be tempted to the same:

Hello, you probably get comments like this all the time, but that was a great post– preceded by many other hilarious tidbits of blog tastiness. I found your book the other night, when my son and daughter wouldn’t go to sleep. They pled innocence, but guess who they blamed? That would be you, Mr Author of Dweeb. You go to bed ten minutes earlier tonight.
Aaron said, on 9/9/2011 9:32:00 AM
Thanks Jennifer! I will happily take comments like yours any day of the week. And I’m happy to take the blame for kids losing a bit of sleep due to reading. They’re sacrificing for a good cause. Keep in touch!

Legend says that on each dead president's birthday, his ghost haunts the grounds of the remote retreat Camp David. But KC and Marshall aren't worried, even though they will be there on October 14, President Eisenhower's birthday. That is, they aren't worried until strange things start happening. Escaping from them had been difficult enough, now Laney needs to keep hidden. All she wanted was to be on her own. Laney is not like other girls... she has very special abilities that set her apart from others. How or why she came about these abilities is a mystery she has yet to unfold. Haunted by memories and flashbacks of the suffering she endured at the hands of her captors, she changes her appearance and hides out in a small town. Ignoring her own warnings, she begins a relationship with a local boy. The relationship turns dangerous when the boy begins developing similar abilities. This development does not fall under the radar of the men who are trying to recapture her. A young doctor's interest is piqued when he witnesses her mysteriously curing a young child's illness. He befriends her due to his growing fascination with uncovering the true nature of her abilities, but not without harboring secrets of his own. Laney's new life falls apart when she meets a young intern that seems to have all the answers to her questions. The information sends her into a tail spin. Thoughts of going on the run once again are thwarted as those whom she was running from find her.

12 Comments on Last Character/Voice Vlog of the Series, last added: 9/13/2010
Thanks for the tips about looking externally as well as internally when developing a character. I do do that. I have four kids and plenty of kid/teen props. lol. It really does help. What I hadn't thought of though, was using this technique to get deeper or pull me out of a funk with that character.
Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to backtrack and view your other vlogs on voice. I'm currently switching my 2nd YA novel from 3rd to 1st POV and the voice is so strikingly different. I definitely would like to hear what you have to say. Thanks.
SA- I'm glad it was useful to you! I figure, if that is my strong point, I should share some insights. I personally love first person, hope that works for you!
Oh man, actually go out to a PUBLIC PLACE and act out your character? Blushes bright red. I actually got bamboozled into doing that exact thing at the last writer's conference I went to. Making a fool of myself in front of sixty other writers? Yikes. But as far as getting into character? It. Worked. Got to act out a ditzy housewife visiting a pyschologist for help with her marriage.
Not sure if I will ever be brave enough to try it again though.
Wow Margo! That's awesome. And it sounds like it was actually a lot of fun. I'm sure you did a great job. Glad to hear a story where something like that worked out. :D
There was an exercise that we had to do for this workshop… the card I pulled was the nurse in romeo and juliet… the facilitator wanted us find an example of what fruit or vegetable the character represented… I came up with an eggplant - I bought an eggplant and practiced it's stature and emerged with this physical 'waddle' of the character that made the character real for me.
Psychologically the deep purple hues of a deepened ripe-ness along with the soft inner texture gave my character depth, wisdom and humor - "I am an eggplant, after all!".. that I needed to be convincing for my fellow actors, while inviting the audience into the believability as well.
Leah - I'm so glad you took the time to visit! Love it, and love the whole eggplant thing. Ha! I'll have to add that to the character questionnaire - what vegetable do you most resemble? LOL
Okay, this is too funny. Two weeks ago, I bought some clothes that the teen mc of my new wip would wear. You're right. I did feel like I was in character. My kids thought it was strange that I was buying the graphic t-shirts because they aren't my style.
On WriteOnCon there was a vlog in which an author made a collage for each of her characters (the major ones). She cut up magazines with pictures and words that represented her characters. I tried that this weekend. It was amazing. It was like my characters were there in my house. Like flesh and blood. I could even hear their voices in my head. ;)
Stina - that is very cool. For the first time this past week I made a powerpoint presentation using pics from google images that I thought looked like my characters. Not only was it really nerdy fun, I think it helped make it feel more real as well. You never know until you try.
And I wonder if I could get into character and pass for a middle schooler tomorrow? I'll just slide into some stretch pants a flowery longish shirt. No prob.
Be sure to stop by on Thursday for an interview of epic proportions. Thanks to author Kiersten White, whose bookPARANORMALCYdebut's this week.I am interviewing her MC, Evie, right here on Paranormal Point of View! Not only that, but OF COURSE there will be a contest wherein you can win a copy of the super fabulous amazing book.
Now, back to character and voice.

Yeah, I already did my homework before I even knew it was assigned! Great minds think alike - I picked apart some great voicy characters in "Dragon of Trelian" in my last post. Can't wait to see what you treat us with in your selections.
Bekah - LOL! No!! I'm technologically challenged, so I always say 3 or 4 AM if I schedule a post so it will be up in the morning for all the East Coasters out there!
Don't forget Tomorrow is the last chance for entering my amazing contest courtesy of Lisa Desrochers! Check the link for details.
Now, to quote Monty Python, for something completely different.
In place of Monday Madness (for a short time at least) I've decided to grace you humble viewers with a series of vlogs. What about? VOICE. CHARACTER. It seems to be my strong point and I want to share with you why I believe that is and how you can use that information.
So, here's VLOG #1, in which I introduce my theory:

I spent Tuesday - Thursday of this week at BEA - the gigunda annual trade show for booksellers in New York City. It was crazy-intense and wonderful. I got to hear smart people talk, saw friends be honored, receive some nice recognition from independent booksellers for some of my work, sign LOTS of books, go to parties, hear the opening pages of Mockingjay (the 3rd Hunger Games book. No, they didn't have any ARCs. It comes out on August 24th. Order your copy from an indie bookseller now.), and have great conversations with booksellers about how we authors can help them do what they do best; get books into the hands of readers.
And I brought my new camera so I could make a few videos for you!
Here is the first one. Mostly it shows the very patient booksellers who waited in line for hours for me to sign advanced copies of FORGE. Be sure to check the end of the clip to see the special guest appearance by His High Crankiness His High Bookishness, Former Children's Literature Ambassador Jon Whathisname.
I'm taking the rest of the long weekend off from the Internet. Happy Memorial Day and see you Tuesday!
Hope you all enjoy the out takes from the Canterwood Crest shoot! :) It's fun to see the models being candid and cool--just like they are when they're not working.
