The Great Plains Emerging Writer Prize, sponsored the Great Plains Writers’ Conference at South Dakota State University, is given annually to a writer of the Great Plains region who has not yet published a book, but whose work and career shows exceptional promise. The winner will receive a $1000 honorarium and a featured reading at the conference in Brookings, SD in March, 2015, as well as land travel and lodging.
Submissions open October 1, 2014. Postmark deadline December 1, 2014. All genres open; include a maximum of 15 pages of poetry or hybrid-genre work, or a maximum of 20 pages of fiction, nonfiction, drama, or screenplay. Work submitted may be previously published, but must be stripped of all information identifying the author or the venue. Judging will be blind. Entry fee $15.
The Great Plains region is broadly defined as reaching from western Minnesota to eastern Montana and from the Canadian border to central Oklahoma. We consider writers to be “of” this region if they have resided here more than three years or have a demonstrable historical link to the region (e.g., you grew up here and moved away). Please state your relationship to the region in your cover letter.

Indiana Writers’ Consortium (IWC) is pleased to announce the extension of its annual networking dinner to include an intimate, high quality, and affordable half-day writers’ conference on October 11, 2014. The conference, which will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn, in Merrillville, Indiana, will include multiple afternoon breakout sessions and be followed by a dinner and keynote address by Barbara Shoup, author of seven novels, executive director of Indiana Writers Center, associate editor of OV Books, and an associate faculty member at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.
IWC seeks proposals from individuals and groups who are at different stages in their writing careers that will represent a broad range of perspectives and experiences. Presentations may include topics such as:
· Writing and craft
· Business of publishing
· Creative writing pedagogy
· Academic and community program development
· Genre trends
Interactive individual presentation, four-to-five person panels, creative writing workshops, and round table discussions are welcome.

Tennessee Mountain Writers announces the Excalibur Award for a first-time novelist of a full-length juvenile (for middle school level readers) or young adult novel manuscript of publishable quality. The winner will receive a $500 cash award to be presented at the 2015 Tennessee Mountain Writers Conference. Writers are asked to submit the first forty pages and a complete one- to two-page synopsis of the novel; semi-finalists will then be asked to submit their entire novels.
We are accepting submissions through June 1, 2014, from only writers who have not previously published or self-published a novel. TMW reserves the right to not award the prize and to seek new manuscripts in 2015 if the professional judges deem that none of the submitted manuscripts are of publishable quality. Several scholarships are being offered for first-time participants of the 19th Annual WINTER POETRY & PROSE GETAWAY, January 13-16, 2012, at Seaview.
The Jan-ai Scholarship will sponsor two poets, writers or song writers between the ages of 18 - 30 who are residents of NJ, NY or PA. Deadline: December 1, 2011.
Winners may choose from workshops in poetry, including a special advanced section with Stephen Dunn, Beginning Your Novel, Children's Market, Writing and Publishing Your Fiction, Memoir, Creative Nonfiction and more.
The conference also includes talks, receptions, open mics, optional tutorials, a bookstore café, sunrise yoga and dancing at the Getaway Disco.

The 40th annual Louisville Conference on Literature & Culture since 1900 will be held at the University of Louisville, February 23-25, 2012. The conference committee invites submissions by creative writers of fiction, nonfiction, and/or poetry. Submissions should be suitable for a 20-minute reading. For full consideration, submissions must be received by 11:59 PM EST on October 17, 2011.

Applications for Sirenland 2012 are now open, from September 15 to Oct. 31, 2011.
Join writers Dani Shapiro, Jim Shepard, and Susan Orlean, along with One Story magazine March 35-31, 2012 for the Sirenland Writers Conference. Experience advanced fiction and memoir workshops in an intimate, supportive environment at one of the most beautiful five star luxury hotels in the world--La Sirenuse--in Positano, Italy.
Participation in this conference is limited to ensure individual attention and create a close, friendly community. Each day features an intensive, small group workshop with acclaimed writers Dani Shapiro, Jim Shepard, and Susan Orlean, as well as private time for writing, and excursions to nearby Pompeii and the Isle of Capri. Evenings will include talks about publishing and living the writer's life, with Dani Shapiro, Jim Shepard, Karen Shepard, Susan Orlean, screenwriter Michael Maren, and Hanna Tinti (co-founder and editor-in-chief of One Story), distinguished visiting authors, student and instructor readings, and fantastic meals overlooking the islands of Li Galli, formerly called the "Island of the Sirens."

Split This Rock Poetry Festival seeks proposals for panels, workshops, and group readings for the upcoming festival to be held in DC, March 22-25, 2012.
