No other series at Marvel has been promoted better this year than this week’s new release, Black Panther. That’s a statement I never thought I would make! When the publisher tapped popular author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates (The Atlantic) to write the series, Marvel took advantage of the opportunity to create a comic that could reach more […]

Via this month’s solicits. I had the pleasure of hanging out with Kyle a bit and interviewing him for an upcoming “More to come” podcast. Circuit Breaker, his long brewing series written by Kevin McCarthy for Image is just out, and Baker is reprinting his graphic novels in a handy smaller size. You can […]

And apparently, Marvel agrees, as they’ve just announced a big merchandising program for the character, tying in not only with his movie debut in Captain America […]

There is no matter more important in the United States right now than the matter of race. Between mass incarceration, permanent economic disadvantages, lack of access to health care and education, police shootings and the rise of overt racism it’s never been clearer that there are two Americas, and if you’re black, you don’t get […]

On the set of Captain America: Civil War (aka Avengers 2.5 basically), which is now filming in Germany, an intrepid photographer got the first live-action shot of the Black Panther costume that the public has seen thus far. Francesco Francavilla is an Italian comic-book artist who’s fame has skyrocketed the last 5 years. He’d been working in the independent comics scene since the mid-2000’s on projects like The Black Coat, and Sorrow. Francavilla’s first high-profile project came in 2008 when he collaborated with Matt Wagner on a new Zorro series for Dynamite Entertainment. From there he got to infuse his classic pulp style art on Marvel’s Black Panther, and Scott Snyder’s first Batman story arc in Detective Comics.
In 2012 Francavilla introduced his own noir vigilante, The Black Beetle, to the world in the pages of Dark Horse Presents. Since then, 2 volumes of the critically acclaimed series have been published(No Way Out, 2013 & Necrologue, 2014).
Most of Francesco Francavilla’s recent work has been focused on the mega-hit Afterlife with Archie, which gives readers a more mature, horror take on those classic Riverdale characters. He also continues to work on various personal, and professional illustration projects, including some exclusive movie posters for Mondo.
Francavilla is frequently updating his blog with new art, so if you like what you see click here for more!

Happy Halloween everyone! We’ve got something even better than treats today: great news in diversity!
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently came out in an editorial published by Bloomberg Businessweek, saying that he is “proud to be gay,” and making him the first openly gay leader of a major U.S. company. This was the first time Cook addressed his orientation publicly, saying, “I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others,” Cook wrote. “So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.” With more states and people accepting gay marriage and supporting LGBTQ rights, Cook’s move is inspirational and will hopefully lead to more acceptance within the workplace.
Marvel just recently announced their next phase of superhero movies and we’re excited to see that it’s going to include a Black Panther movie! The Black Panther (T’Challa) was the first black superhero in American comics. We’re also looking forward to seeing Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman! DC announced that Momoa would be playing Aquaman in the highly anticipated “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and the Wonder Woman movie will premier in 2017.
Have you heard more good news in diversity? Let us know in the comments!

WHOA — Marvel really did announce a Captain Marvel movie for 2018, and Black Panther for 2017, with Chadwick Boseman (42) joining Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans on stage.
Today’s Marvel presser was roundly liveblogged, and it was apparently a tumultuous event at the Disney owned El Capitan theater. The entire Stage 3 line-up was announced and it goes like this:
Captain America: Civil War for May 6, 2016 — huh what could THAT refer to. Spinning out of Avengers 2 no doubt. Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby.
Doctor Strange November 4, 2016. Directed by Scott Derrickson. No official Cumberbatch confirmation. Doctor Strange was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
Guardians 2 moved up to May 5, 2017. The Guardians of the Galaxy created by various people, including Jack Kirby, Bill Mantlo, Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin.
A third Thor movie: Thor Ragnarok July 28th, 2017. Thor was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee.
Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman on November 5, 2017. Black Panther was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Avengers: Infinity War in TWO PARTS, just like Harry Potter for 2018 and 2019, while Chris Evans is still in shape. The Avengers created mostly by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Captain Marvel for July 6th, 2018. Carol Danvers was created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan; in her role as Captain Marvel she was developed by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy.
And as predicted, the Inhumans for November 2018 The inhumans were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby because there is like, nothing they did not create.
Also released, this sweet concept art for the Black Panther:
If you’re keeping score at home….well, this is a BIG chart. Collating. As several folks pointed out, DC revealed thei rmovie slate at an investors conference and mostly to keep investors happy following the failed Rupert Murdoch takeover and shaky stock earnings. Marvel held a popular event where fans were present and involved. A lot of people don’t want to get into the WB vs Disney thing, but I can assure you, it is real.
Also, aren’t you glad that Marvel settled with the estate of Jack Kirby so that his legacy with these characters can be fully explored going forward? Yes you are.

It’s only gossip for now but we can but hope: El Mayimbe at Latino Review reports that Marvel’s first standalone movie following “Captain America 2″ will be none other than “Black Panther.” Screenwriter Mark Bailey was hired to write “Black Panther” in January 2011, and according to what El Mayimbe hears, “the script is fantastic.”
Scooper points to various clues in Marvel movies—a map of Wakanda here, a vein of vibranium there—as evidence a Black Panther movie might be in the works. Reminder: T’Challa, king of Wakanda and the first major superhero of color in superhero comics, is, like Luke Cage, a role beloved of every actor of color. A partial list of those whose names have been suggested:
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje?
T.I.?
Djimon Honsou?
Chiwetel Ejiofor?
Someone else?
It’d be nice if Marvel (and, to a growing extent, DC) would be more open about its cancellations. This growing habit of “listed this month, not next month” is very irritating. I didn’t know Illuminati was cancelled till I read the final page of #7.. At least in the 70’s, there was an excuse (flimsy as it was) for cancellations not being announced—some decided so fast that DC would have their little box saying something like “next issue on sale the third week of July” in the final issues.
“Even after having watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I had to check to see who this character is. Releasing an ongoing series focused on him seemed to me to be quite a daring move -or am I the only one who totally forgot his part in the movie?”
Poe Dameron has a lot of fans. It’s not that surprising to see Marvel try a series for him.
Merci pour les conseils culinaires en fin de rubrique. ;)
Pleasantly surprised the racists haven’t come out in response to the comments about black characters (and also pleasantly surprised about how well two of those books are selling).
You can not be a racist, and still be glad that as clichéd, unnecessary and overhyped a character as Red Wolf is failing.
Why does it matter if they put FINAL ISSUE in thr solicits?
Chris: simple courtesy for people paying dollars to buy their products.
You’re a bit harsch on Moon Knight I think, it’s not that a much a popular character for a start, both first and second issues went on reprint – and besides it’s beautifully drawn.
Why does it matter if they put FINAL ISSUE in thr solicits?
==================================================================
Chris:
Some of us aren’t rolling in mounds of cash. Ergo, we have to adhere to a budget each month. If I see a title I buy every month isn’t solicited and it doesn’t say “final issue”, how do I know it’s not coming back next month? Hard to commit to a new title if I’m not sure the unsolicited title is coming back or not. And, like most other comics fans, my budget is not flexible–once again, no mounds of money lying around. So, yes, it WOULD be nice, and it’s not too much to ask, for Marvel and DC to have the common courtesy to let us know when they’re cancelling a title. Considering the dwindling readership these days, the LAST thing they need is more disgruntled—possibly soon to be former—readers.
Yep, like Rob said. For us, overseas consumers, we HAVE to preorder a title to have a chance to read it. We don’t have racks with all the titles available to choose from. Comics shops with original floppy comics wouldn’t survive with racks like that. So we preorder. And yeah, knowing a title is stopped would be nice, same thing with knowing if it’s a limited serie or not.
That’s also why double shipping is so annoying because it cuts your monthly budget, even when you did not add any new title to your “list”.
But, apparently, from what we can see of Marvel’s floppy policy, they just don’t care about floppy readers at all.
Which is a bad move: how many times do floppy readers think “well, I’ll get in in trade paperback format” and then forget about it later? Or finally buy it, but second handed, because it’s cheaper?
