You’re invited to take part in CROCUS 2010, Saffron Tree‘s exciting annual book festival in celebration of their anniversary. They’re turning 4 this year and have planned a week-long romp in honor of culturally diverse and unique stories. Make sure to drop by at some point between Oct 23-30 to wish them a happy anniversary and to enjoy all the special book reviews, interviews, contests and giveaways planned for the occasion. As a matter of fact, you should plan on stopping by and joining in on the fun all seven days of it!

PaperTigers’ current issue, focusing on children’s literature from India and the Indian diaspora, features personal view pieces by Saffron Tree contributors’ UTBT (Anitha Rumkumar) and Choxbox (Namrata), about Anushka Ravishankar’s books and a young readers’ series on Indian history, respectively. Hace 40 años atras, un 20 de julio de 1969 el hombre llegó a la luna ms de 40 millones de personas alrededor del mundo pudo tremendo hecho histórico retransmitido en directo por la televisión y que se convirtió en uno de los acontecimientos más importantes del siglo pasado.



Apolo 11 es el nombre de la misión espacial que los Estados Unidos enviaron al espacio el 16 de julio de 1969; fue la primera misión tripulada en llegar a la superficie de la Luna. El Apolo 11 fue impulsado por un cohete Saturno V desde la plataforma LC 39A y lanzado a las 10:32 hora local del complejo de Cabo Kennedy, en Florida (Estados Unidos). Oficialmente se conoció a la misión como AS-506.

La tripulación del Apolo 11 estaba compuesta por el comandante de la misión Neil A. Armstrong, de 38 años; Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., de 39 años y piloto del LEM, apodado Buzz; y Michael Collins, de 38 años y piloto del módulo de mando. La denominación de las naves, privilegio del comandante, fue Eagle para el módulo lunar y Columbia para el módulo de mando.

El comandante Neil Armstrong fue el primer ser humano que pisó la superficie de nuestro satélite el 21 de julio de 1969 a las 2:56 (hora internacional UTC) al Sur del Mar de la Tranquilidad (Mare Tranquilitatis), seis horas y media después de haber alunizado. Este hito histórico se retransmitió a todo el planeta desde las instalaciones del Observatorio Parkes (Australia). Inicialmente el paseo lunar iba a ser retransmitido a partir de la señal que llegase a la estación de seguimiento de Goldstone (California, Estados Unidos), perteneciente a la Red del Espacio Profundo, pero ante la mala recepción de la señal se optó por utilizar la señal de la estación Honeysuckle Creek, cercana a Canberra (Australia). Ésta retransmitió los primeros minutos del paseo lunar, tras los cuales la señal del observatorio Parkes fue utilizada de nuevo durante el resto del paseo lunar.




Se acusaba a la Nasa de fraude!. Las fotografías tomadas por las misiones Apolo, los paseos lunares y algunos accidentes técnicos anteriores a la primera misión exitosa contienen "Anomalías" que han sido descubiertas por expertos en fotografía e investigadores

Hoy en día, mucha gente se pregunta:
¿Hemos llegado realmente a la Luna?
¿Ha pisado el hombre realmente la Luna?
¿No habrá sido un fraude por parte de los estadounidenses?

onight I walked home from the 24th and Mission BART stop. It was Valentine’s day, and the neighborhood celebrated by being outside.

Stores stayed open late. Perfumed Latino guys pushed and egged each other on, nervously buying flowers for sweethearts and would-be sweethearts. The bodas civiles joints lubricated their trade with sidewalk tables of cheap teddy bears wrapped in red cellophane.

I walked home in my pink dress. Women holding little girls walked by, clutching roses, boxes of chocolates. Women completed errands, hauled children, and bought food with the same grim determination, red cellophane emerging from their purses.

I saw a beautifully happy couple. Their little daughter ran up the sidewalk in front of them. I caught the man’s eye as I passed and saw satisfaction on his face.

More people were on the street than usual. More police were around. I saw two huge officers, giants. One had his hand on the back of a tiny fast-talking man. There was no sense of potential violence, just a solid hand on the back and a posture that clearly communicated that whatever jig there may have been was now thoroughly up.

There was music and the smell of onions cooking. The jazz club was setting up a show. As I walked home, buses drove back and forth full of people like me, heading home, and out, and home again.

It's a beautiful sunny day up here in the Pacific Northwest. A rarity! Enjoy the day!
