1. BAD BLOGGER!!

{hangs head in shame:( }

crazy last couple of weeks....between a commission, matting and framing prints for some friends who are always kind enough to buy my work for their littles and a pretty intense flare up in my right arm from all the osteoarthritis, radiculopathy, nerve damage and chronic inflammation in my cervical spine (something i know i rarely talk about in this blog) after three neck surgeries. i guess i've always been one to try and not dwell on the not so positive stuff but perhaps it helps others who deal with pain just to follow their biggest and most loved passion. there is (and always will be) a FERAL need in me to create. maybe you have to be an artist to really get it. you just can't live without out. really. so, apologies for the lack of posts but if you know me personally, you know my drive far outweighs my tiny stature. in the words of my favorite Pixar film, Meet the Robinsons, "KEEP MOVING FORWARD!!"

now to what i've been up to (besides the pain)...a sweet commission from one of my drawings (FOR SALE HERE) which i turned into a painting for a sweet little ginger. i will be posting the finished painting as well as offering prints of her very soon! you'll have to check back and see...;)

here are some WIP pics as well as a cute little blue penguin i sketched...just because.

2. rare beauties

few and far between
4x12, acrylic on canvas
©the enchanted easel 2016

inspired by my love of blue poppies and red heads..."few and far between". my latest painting.

i truly loved painting this one. the 4"x12" was an interesting size for me and one on which i had never before painted. also, the color scheme will go down as one of my favorites. i've always loved red heads. as a little girl, i remember always wanting to have red hair and green eyes (umm, yeah. that might have passed me by, being 110% italian....). ok, back to the painting....

blue poppies. another favorite. last year, on a trip to longwood gardens, i completely fell in love with these rare beauties. talk about GORGEOUS. just made to be painted. my original thought was a watercolor but then my creative little brain thought i'd merge two of my loves into one painting. "few and far between" was born.

PRINTS AVAILABLE HERE. also, coming in a few weeks to my shop will be PENDANT NECKLACES. crafted with my own two little hands. every single one of them. this beauty will be included in those. it's going to be good....:)

6. i "heart" gingers....

©the enchanted easel 2015
and this little beauty, in progress.

red heads/gingers...always my favorite. ever since i was a little girl, i have always been fascinated with red hair, strawberry blonde, gingers, etc, etc, etc....

this beauty, named lily, with her macaroni and cheese colored tresses (i know, it's late and i shouldn't be thinking about mac and cheese...;)) and her beryl green colored eyes well, i "heart" her...already. :)

{fingers crossed she comes out great in the end!}

7. Gingers

I thought, after a bit of a hike in responsibility level at my day job, I'd do something fun & breezy to chillax (I said it).  And what could be easier than a self portrait? Lots of things are, especially when you've not looked at yourself properly for a bit & you forgot how mad you look.

& yes, I think ginger jokes are funny, because if I took myself as seriously as some people did I'd be as insane as I am sure I look.  This is my fave ginger joke after the brou-ha-ha that was 'gingers don't have souls' farce.  Because it was a farce.  Only now I've let you in on the truth.  We have many souls, just how many of them are our own is unconfirmed.

8. Gingered Carrot Soup

I’ve been trying new recipes, trying to get inspired to cook again. I really lost my cooking mojo after a long period of food sensitivities with my son (thankfully now he can eat anything) and then moving here to Germany, where the groceries are so different. Well, they’re not soooo different, and the quality is great, but it’s sometimes hard to make the recipes I was used to making.

I really liked this soup, and the hubs gave it a thumbs up. I thought the kids would really dig the orange color and slurp it down, but they weren’t into it. I’ll try again with them. The combo of spices works well: obviously ginger but also cumin, ground fennel, cinnamon, allspice, dried mint. I like orange veggies, which are kind of sweet, complemented by savory flavors, and with onion, garlic, and the added citrus hint (lemon juice), this had a really nice complexity.

A few notes:  as the recipe states, it is quite a thick soup. I like a thinner soup texture, though, so I think next time I would crank up the spices a little and water it down. I accidentally cranked up some of the spices already, having used the 1/2 tsp measure for a few of them—-I must be getting old, I could’ve sworn it was the 1/4 tsp. Oh well, it didn’t seem to matter. I also used nutmeg instead of allspice because I didn’t have it. The recipe was forgiving. I didn’t measure the lemon, either, and used one lemon and one lime because that was what I had. I don’t know if that’s more citrus that it called for, but since I’m a citrus-lover, it didn’t matter.

You can get the recipe here (along with lots of other Moosewood recipes). Also, if you haven’t discovered the cooking blog 101cookbooks, that’s another great place to go for inspiration. She does some amazing things with vegetables.
