1. Running Rabbits

Another small book illustration assignment came along, involving lots and lots of rabbits. It's super fun to draw and actually pretty challenging. It's for the wonderful writer Jeff Vandermeer. The funny thing about drawing animals is that I always start off too realistically before finding the right shapes and motion. I still have a few pages left to ink for Maddy, less than 10! And if you're waiting for a commission, please hold tight I'm working my way through this stuff.

2. The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities~Buy This Book!!

OK, I think I can safely say I've never been prouder, or more surprised to be part of a project than with Cabinet of Curiosities . This book is just amazing. The talent is top rate. It's a very visual collection of short fiction based on the idea of the Cabinet of Curiosities.Contributors include Holly Black, Greg Broadmore, Ted Chiang, John Coulthart, Rikki Ducornet, Amal El-Mohtar, Minister Faust, Jeffrey Ford, Lev Grossman, N.K. Jemisin, Caitlin R. Kiernan, China Mieville, Mike Mignola, Michael Moorcock, Alan Moore, Garth Nix, Naomi Novik, Eric Orchard, James A. Owen, Helen Oyeyemi, J.K. Potter, Cherie Priest, Ekaterina Sedia, Jan Svankmajer, Rachel Swirsky, Carrie Vaughn, Jake von Slatt, Tad Williams, Charles Yu, and many more. See? Amazing.

“The narrative scope and stellar assemblage of writers and illustrators…makes this a book that will be absolutely cherished by fantasy, science fiction, and steampunk afficionados alike.” – Paul Goat Allen, B&N Book Club

So, please help me spread the word and get yourself a copy of this amazing book.

3. A Feast Of Slug

Here is an unused page from the Jeff Vandermeer comic The Situation. Unused because I was stupidly referring to an older version of Jeff's script when I did it. A testament to my sloppy mind. A shame too because I really like this page. I just sent al the completed artwork off and am turning to a jelly comprised entirely of anxiety.

4. C'est Ca!

Just finished all the inks and colours on the webcomic for Tor.com The situation. I've been getting up and going to bed at crazy hours to get this done. Such a relief. Of course now I wait to hear from editors. The most stressful part.

5. Nearing The End

Working away on the Situation. I can finally see the end. I think it'll be a great webcomic.

6. Back In The Cave

coSo glad I left the studio intact at my mom. I’m working on The Situation for Tor and really loving it. Few distractions all tucked away in my mom’s unfinished basement playing music on my laptop. I also have a proposal open in a word document, which I hope to have finished by the time I reach Toronto. I’m currently reading Kelly link’s collection Magic for Beginners which is amazing. Worth it for the story the Cat Skin alone. I’m listening to Liszt and Radiohead and bluegrass and watching Extras. It’s raining all the time which suits me fine.

8. BellySnatcher

These images are from a year long project I've been doing with Jeff Vandermeer, an author whose writing has had a tremendous impact on my work and thinking, casing me to look at the world a little deeper and with greater wonder. BellySnatcher was started about a year ago based on a dream Jeff had. Jeff dreamed that he was collaborating on a book with me called BellySnatcher, so I I illustrated a book based on his dream. I've used not only his dream but my responses to all of Jeff's amazing work, his writing about hidden things and people and the dizzy, scary depths we face. The mixture of deadly serious and ridiculous. I hope that I've captured some of Jeff's wonderful sense of humour as well.

I'm touching up a couple of images today and scanning the book and then sending it off.

Jeff talks about it here. I would encourage anyone who likes books and has a sense of literary adventurousness to read Jeff's blog regularly.

9. Collage Humour

Another piece from the Vandermeer collaboration. There is something about his writing that causes me to respond with collage and humour (collage Humour?)....

11. The Next Few Months

This is the chapter head for my new Harry And Silvio project. The name of this first chapter is The Cloud Cave. I've finished all the initial inks on the 14 page chapter and am now going to go back and do revisions which largely consists of going back and forth between black and white inks. It should all be done this weekend.

For the first time in over a year I feel like I solidly know what I'm doing over the next 4 to 6 months. I have three projects on the go. It actually feels really good to be making things again and not wheel spinning. I just sent off the contract to Annick Press, a Canadian publisher, to do a new picture book. More on that later. Also, I'll be serializing a comic on Tor's website with writer Jeff Vandermeer. That's that amazing Situation project I've talked about before. And finally I'll be working on this Harry and Silvio story. I'm not sure how I'll proceed with that. I envision a story of about 120 150 pages. Next week I'll be sending it out to publishers. If it doesn't get picked up I'll continue to publish it as a minicomic and perhaps ass a webcomic. I may do this if it is picked up. We'll see, I guess.

Anyway, that's my next few months. I have to go now. Henry is poking the keyboard....
