Early Bird…
Either you are… or you’re NOT!
Which are you?
After my last get-together with my writing pal, Mahtab Narsimhan, I’ve adopted a new daily work schedule. I generally wake at about 6-6:30 a.m. and head down to my office to do e-mail, then surf for publishing news for my Market Watch column while also updating @inkyelbows and other feeds on Twitter.
From now on, I’m going to do some writing first thing … BEFORE GOING ONLINE. I’ve been trying it for a few days now and I’m very happy with the results. By 8 a.m., I’ve been writing for 1.5-2 hours, and then I can start working on my publishing news column. I’ll do more writing later, but it’s a good way to start the day plus I’m more productive.
It’ll take a little while before it becomes habit, though — when I wake up, I am SO used to going online right away. It’s how I wake up, instead of the morning cup of coffee that other people have.
What about the rest of you? What’s your morning ritual?

Did you know there’s a typewriter orchestra in Boston?
For the record, I actually am starting to drink coffee in the morning. Hubby’s fault – he bought a Tassimo. In the beginning, I drank coffee just because it was fun to use the machine. Now I drink it because I like it. Hopefully I won’t reach the point where I’ll need it. To you coffee drinkers: is one cup a day reasonable? But back to writerstuff…
I loveLOVE this blog. Its tagline: “The straight dope on publishing from publishing’s most fearsome figure—THE INTERN.” I would so read anything this woman writes.
Yikes. Ray Bradbury hates e-books and the Internet! Seems odd for a science fiction author to feel this way but I forgive him because he’s Ray Bradbury.

According to Wired’s Clive Thompson, we need to stop thinking about the future of publishing and think instead about the future of reading.
Are creative writing workshops a bad idea?
Note: I comb publishing news sites every morning for my Writersmarket.com column. Morning Coffee links to stories that don’t really fit into my column but that I figure would be of interest to writers as well as blog news. For publishing industry news (magazine launchings/closings, industry trends, etc.) please see my Market Watch column instead.

Hm, talk about creative book marketing. Stephen King has decided to promote a recent short story by publishing the first few paragraphs on the naked body of Leonardo DiCaprio’s girlfriend.
With everyone Twittering and texting so much these days, I’m not surprised that Twitterfiction is also taking off.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger needs to get himself a better calculator, say California education officials after Schwarzenegger claimed that schools could save hundreds of millions of dollars by using free digital textbooks.
The much hyped Microsoft Bing has launched. When I first went to Bing.com, it took me to the UK main page. When I changed my Settings to include my location (Toronto, Canada), however, I got the U.S. version of Bing instead. I haven’t had a chance to thoroughly test out this new search engine yet, but so far it doesn’t seem much better than Google, so I’m not about to switch. What about the rest of you? Has anyone found anything super-fantabulous about Bing?
OwlKids (who publish Chickadee, Owl and Chirp magazines for young people) has partnered with General Mills for a special promo which enables buyers to get a free magazine.
The cereal company has also partnered with Transcontinental Media, so fans of Cheerios and Oatmeal Crisp can select a free issue from 12 Transcontinental media titles. Offer lasts until the end of August and is available across Canada.
Intriguing idea. I’ll have to look for one of those cereal boxes…

As I comb my online sources for useful publishing industry news to post in my Writersmarket.com Market Watch column each morning, I often come across tidbits that don’t really qualify for my column but might be of interest to Inkygirl readers. I’ll going to start posting some from time to time.
When I first began Inkspot many years ago, I had a newsy feature called “Morning Coffee,” so I figured hey, it’s only appropriate that I use it again. Today’s Morning Coffee:

Hey Roberta! I fell in love with the thumbnail pic on the IF site. I knew your illustration would blow me away and it did! It took about 46 years, but I finally became an early bird. Now I’ll never go back ) Great one my friend!
hey there beautiful! You have been busy and of course you are early!!! I love both of them. how fabulous. I am the early riser. My husband and daughter can’t stand it. I am up with the chickens really. I have been getting up at 3 or 4am for most of my life. My mother started this foolishness. She and I worked at the same hospital for many years and drove to work together. Sleeping late was not an option for us. If she got up you got up. This is wonderful girly. I love all this rich, rich detail that you are putting into your pieces. They come to life with color and expression. It’s wonderful to see. Hope all is well with you.
