1. *swoons*

On Friday, I had a school visit in Hays, Kansas, which is located just 10 minutes from my hometown (and my mom!).

The kids at Roosevelt Elementary blew me away with their kindness, their enthusiasm, and their artistic abilities.

Artwork covered the entire school. And ALL of it tied in with my books. Oh, my writer heart!

These are just a few of the projects the students did that were inspired by Mostly Monsterly.

Behold the awesomeness!

6. Mostly Monsterly--winner of the 2011 Oklahoma Book Award

I am both thrilled and honored that Mostly Monsterly won the 2011 Oklahoma Book Award in the category of children's books.

I had the pleasure of having TWO hot dates for the night. DH and my mom. :)
Mom and Tammi

One of my favorite parts of the night was hearing Benjamin Meyer's acceptance speech for winning the 2011 Oklahoma Book Award in the category of poetry.

This was his last line:
"Thank you to our Creator, who, I believe, whispers poetry to those who will listen."

Let's keep listening, everybody.

7. Scholastic Parent & Child Fun Finds: Mostly Monsterly

Last month, Scholastic Parent & Child contacted me about including Mostly Monsterly in a new video series the magazine was putting together for their website. What an honor!

Actors(!!) were selected for the parts of the mother and the child. The video was shot at Scholastic. AND I got to play a mini role as well. Ooh.

8. Mostly Monsterly

How could I not grab this off the shelf of new books at the library? Mostly Monsterly is an awesome pick for most young readers, especially so close to Halloween - what you haven't bought pumpkins yet?
Scott Magoon's characters, crisp ink work, and flat colors remind me of comic books (Like Lenore - dark but cute). Bernadette will win you over, picking flowers and baking treats.
I love the subtle lesson from Tammi Sauer that we are often more complex than just monsters or sweet girls. And that we can find ways to live in both worlds.

10. I received mail from my main character today!

For those of you who have read Mostly Monsterly...you know Bernadette likes to make gross cards for her friends. Well, today she sent ME one! Something tells me she had a little help from my somewhat monsterly yet totally fabulous illustrator buddy Ken Min.

14. Phew.

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2–With her pointy ears, claws, and fangs, Bernadette is mostly monsterly. She lurches, growls, and causes mayhem. However, she also likes to pet kittens, pick flowers, and bake. This side of her personality doesn't go over well with her classmates at the Monster Academy, until she shows them that she can hold her own with the best of them. Sauer tells a well-paced story in simple, repetitive phrases. The writing reveals just enough, allowing the artwork to fill in the rest of the story. Magoon's whimsical cartoon illustrations featuring rough lines are reminiscent of those in Mo Willems's Leonardo, the Terrible Monster (Hyperion, 2005). This artistic style proves effective in conveying the look of monsters without the frightening attributes. In fact, the art complements the humorous tone of the story, and the interplay of text and illustration is such that the book comes across as the product of one mind instead of two. A fun and delightful read for all children who have both a monsterly and a kind side.Kim T. Ha, Elkridge Branch Library, MD

15. Mostly Monsterly Book Trailer

Hey, LJ.

I made a trailer for Mostly Monsterly. Those of you who know of my limited tech-savviness should be astounded. My family is in shock. Even the dog seems mildly impressed.

Take a peek. If you dare....

16. Psst. Inside information in this post!

Mostly Monsterly stars a monster named Bernadette who is a little too sweet. Bernadette tries all sorts of ways to woo her classmates. But everything fails. Even her secret weapon--CUPCAKES WITH SPRINKLES.

On the jacket of the book, there is a mentioning that Bernadette's Secret Cupcake Recipe will be available on my website.

Today I received an email from my editor. She would like to whip up these cupcakes for the S&S Fall Librarian Preview on Friday(!!!!).

The problem? There was no recipe!

Enter my mom.

She and my aunt Pat spent some time whipping up a recipe for Bernadette.

It's now past 11:30PM. My mom just finished making a trial batch of cupcakes. Is she the best or what?!

She CLAIMS they are good, but I told her I need verification. :) I'm calling her secretary Karen in the morning. Karen's first item of business is to eat a cupcake and give me a full report.

I will keep you posted on any Late-breaking Cupcake Developments.

20. Pics of the postcards from S&S:

I took these pics with my phone so my apologies for the fuzziness and the seriously muted colors. The background, for instance, should be a jazzy lime green.

She lurched.

She caused mayhem of all kinds.
But underneath the fangs and fur,
