1. Writing Heals: My Poem for Poem In Your Pocket Day

一日三秋
Silvia Sala / Foter / Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 Generic (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

When I don’t write
words get stuck in my throat,
tightening my muscles.
They curl up in my lungs
Making it hard to breathe
a slow, painful strangulation
sucking the life out of me.
Silence does that.

I had so many years of terrified silence
So many years of threats
to my life
Saw so many people in pain
and fear
the way I was
with no way to know
that they weren’t alone.

So now when my words
uncoil on the page,
become books that reach others
and I hear back how grateful they are
My throat loosens
My breath eases
My heart feels full,
And healing happens.

2. This Morning I E-mailed My Manuscript Out - a poem for writers

THIS MORNING I E-MAILED MY MANUSCRIPT OUT
by
Gregory K.

This morning, I e-mailed my manuscript out –
Clicked send then I let out a huge, happy shout.
Now that it’s gone, there’s so much I can do:
Like speak to my friends and my family, too!
I’ll do all the dishes. I’ll sweep all the floors.
I’ll visit that place that they call “the outdoors.”
I’ll catch up on reading. A movie sounds good.
I’ll clean off my desktop to check if it’s wood.
I’ll cut back on coffee and eat some real meals.
I’ll see if my legs like how exercise feels.
I do hope I hear ‘bout my manuscript soon,
But I won’t check my inbox... at least until noon.

Elaine has the Poetry Friday Roundup over at the Wild Rose Reader today. It's well worth checking out, as is her blog itself.

3. Writing Words - a poem I wrote about writing

I like reading about writing, and I like writing about writing.

Here’s a poem I just wrote about writing. I hope you enjoy it.

Writing Words

There are words beneath my skin.
Poems.
Secrets.
Memories held.
They lie there,
waiting
for me to listen,
so they can bubble up
to the surface,
ink on my skin-paper,
released.

I breathe.
and write.

4. Changing history - my original poem for Poetry Friday

photo: Erin Mason (~*erin*~ @ flickr)

Changing History . . .

I change history
every day
when I write.
I draw up all the old wounds
the pain that’s black with rot inside me
so old and deep only my pen can touch it
and I shape it into words, into story
that saves the girl
protects the child
loves them all
like they never were.
The words flow like tears.
And with that saving,
the wounds heal, just a little
rot clearing to show fresh blood,
then skin closing over,
and I breathe
and laugh
as history shifts.
Stories are powerful things.
I know it well.
