1. Full Circle: DC celebrates The New 52 with 52nd issue tribute covers

Superman-#52-variant-cover-by-Mikel-Janin"52" is the lucky number at DC Comics, and with the (once) New 52 reaching their 52nd issues, it's time to celebrate with a series of variant covers, because as far as we know, a NEWER 52 might be on the way.

2. How We Remember Together: Public Memorials

For several years I have been interested in public memorials and how an artist, working with a community, implements his or her vision to permanently honor a specific person or event. On this Memorial Day 2012, I offer a few links, paragraphs, and photos of public memorials.
Franklin Roosevelt Memorial in Washington DC
“They (who) seek to establish systems of government based on the regimentation of all human beings by a heandful of individual rulers… call this a new order. It is not new and it is not order.”

3. Scholastic to Publish ‘The Hunger Games Tribute Guide’

Scholastic will publish The Hunger Games Tribute Guide, giving readers a glimpse into the stories of 24 tributes who endure a brutal competition in Suzanne CollinsThe Hunger Games.

Here’s more from the release: “Readers follow the Tributes’ journey from the Reaping to the Games, with a look at all the highlights along the way—the Tribute Parade, the stations of the Training Center, the interviews, and more. The book will include exclusive information about the Tributes’ strengths and weaknesses, their weapons of choice, and their experience in the Capitol before entering the arena.”

In Suzanne Collins‘ book, not much is revealed about the majority of the tributes. In fact, the names of 15 tributes have never been revealed. On the film’s Facebook page, several actors will be playing “Tribute Boy” and “Tribute Girl.” It will be interesting to see if new content may surface in this publication.

4. Random Thoughts Thursday

I am just in shock. Michael Jackson, gone. Wow. I'm just...wow. I'm saddened by this news. The only other time(s) I felt the loss of a celeb was when Aaliyah died (still feeling that loss, even 8 years after her death) and Bernie Mac. While I am not crying, as I'm sure millions of people around the world are doing (I did cry when Aaliyah died), I am sad. He's gone. He's really gone.

I hope and pray that #1, people remember him for what he's done for music and entertainment, not for his troubles toward the end, and #2, he's finally found the peace he's obviously been searching for. Despite the troubles he's had in the past, you can't take away from the fact that he was one of the best entertainers of his time. I mean, come on. Beat It. Billie Jean. Thriller...the list goes on. Not to mention the hits from Jackson 5.

I remember when I was little, I had a serious crush on MJ. My crush wilted away (for obvious reasons), but the fact that Michael is one of my fave entertainers did not. More than his music, I loved watching him perform. His dancing...magnificent. Oh how I wanted to be one of the dancers in his videos or on tour. Alot of the performers today, if they were really honest with themselves, can attribute their moves to Michael Jackson. Their performances have MJ written all over it. Justin Timberlake, Usher, Chris Brown, and many more. Even some of Ciara's moves mirror the King of Pop (but on a more feminine and updated way).

His videos were awesome. My favorite Michael Jackson song and video of all time is not Thriller, but Smooth Criminal. I love absolutely EVERYTHING about that song...the track, the beat, the dance moves...I'm absolutely crazy about this song. I'm not the only one, am I? Despite the fact that he'd already started changing, I loved him in Smooth Criminal...like, really, with him dressed in white, hat tilted down, his smooth moves. In spite of his high-water pants & white socks, Michael was sexy in Smooth Criminal. After seeing this video, I secretly wished I could grow up to become Mrs. MJ (oh, come on, I'm not the only girl in the world who had that kind of a crush on him).

Michael Jackson's death (it's just really weird saying that) ends this week of death and sadness. Ed McMahon and Farrah Fawcett are gone, too. *sigh* In honor of the King of Pop, one of the best entertainers I've ever seen, here's Smooth Criminal. RIP Michael.

5. In Loving Memory of...

Sunday, August 25, 2001. I'm at church, just finishing up the Sunday school lesson with my 1st graders. I hear a knock at the door. Mama's standing outside the room. "Did you hear?" She asks. I shake my head. "Hear what?" Then, she drops the bomb. "The singer, Aaliyah, died in a plane crash." I'll never forget that day. It literally hurt inside. No, not Aaliyah. It's got to be a mistake. And yet, it wasn't. Later that day, I sat, glued to the TV while reporters confirmed what my mom had already told me. Aaliyah, one of my all time favorite performers, was gone.

Aaliyah's death is one of the few celeb deaths that really affected me. I didn't go throught anything major (depression...stuff like that), but I did cry. I did feel that her death has left a void in music. Beautiful (inside and out), talented, gorgeous voice...Aaliyah was awesome. I'd always anticipated her videos to see her latest dance moves. Her music seriously had me jammin. *sigh*

It's been 7 years since her death and I still miss her. I wonder what things would be like if she were still alive? She would've been 29 this year. I know we'd still be enjoying more number hits and watching her blossom as an actress. But, alas, it wasn't meant to be. It was time for her to go home. I'm thankful God allowed her to share her music with the world. There will never be another Aaliyah (I love Ciara, but never understood why people compared her to Aaliyah...2 totally different artists).

Over the last few years (2000 - 2008), we've lost a few good ones...people who made an impact, be it big or small, in the entertainment business. Have you lost loved ones during this time. I've posted pics and names of a few of them. I'm sure I've missed others...you can add to the list. Enjoy my Aaliyah selections while browsing.
