1. Uncovered (5): If I Stay

Hello! Welcome to Uncovered, a weekly cover love post that I usually do on our adult book blog, Nite Lite Book Reviews. I cross post it here if I feature a YA book so that you guys can chime in as well. Let's see what we have this week.

Today on Uncovered, I have an older cover. I had the pleasure of seeing Gayle Forman speak at my local library this week and it reminded me of this awesome cover to If I Stay. Now this is the original hardcover. The paperback edition is very different matches the cover to the sequel, Where She Went. While I like the new paperback cover, I like this one more. There's just something about it. It's so simply and pretty. It doesn't look like your typical YA novel and it stands out on the shelves. There's something lonely looking about it with the single flower, but it's also very beautiful and serene.

That's my pick for this week. Has everyone but me read this book already? I plan to get to it soon, I swear!

2. Uncovered (4): The Night Itself

Hello, everyone! It's Friday which means it's time for Stacked, a weekly cover love post that I do over on our sister blog Nite Lite. When I feature a YA cover, I also cross-post it to RNSL. This week I have a really awesome looking cover to The Night Itself by Zoe Marriott. I can't remember where I first saw this now, but I immediately put it on my cover lust list. Besides being illustration based (I am so predictable), I love how the purple and pink really stand out. I am not sure what the patterns are going around the girl but they remind me of an octopus, one of my favorite sea creatures. Is it weird to say that I also like this girls haircut?  Now let's take a look at the synopsis.
A breathtaking new urban fantasy trilogy from the critically acclaimed, award winning author of The Swan Kingdom and Shadows on the Moon.
When fifteen year old Mio Yamato furtively sneaks the katana - an ancestral Japanese sword - out of its hiding place in her parent's attic to help liven up her Christmas party costume, she has no idea of the darkness she is about to unleash on modern day London, or the family secrets that she is going to uncover.
The paralysing paranoia that descends on her before she gets to her friend's party is her first clue. The vivid and terrifying visions that nearly get her killed are a pretty good warning too.

The giant nine-tailed cat demon that comes after the sword and tries to rip her throat out? Overkill.
Seconds away from becoming kitty-food, Mio is saved by Shinobu, a mysterious warrior boy. But it's already too late. Mio has ruptured the veil between the mortal realm and the Underworld, and now the gods and monsters of ancient Japan stalk the streets of London, searching for her and the sword.

With the help of her best friend Jack, a fox spirit named Hikaru - and the devoted protection of the betwitchingly familiar Shinobu - Mio attempts to discover the true nature of the sword and its connection to the Yamato family. Because if she doesn't learn how to control the katana's incredible powers, she's in danger of being overwhelmed by them. And if she can't keep the sword safe from the terrible creatures who want it for their own, she'll lose not only her own life... but the love of a lifetime.
How awesome does this sound? A YA fantasy novel with a katana, gods and monsters, and a fox spirit? Sign me up! Not only does it have a gorgeous cover but it sounds like an awesome book. This one doesn't come out until July 4 but you can bet that I've already got it on my wishlist.

Anyone else think those swirling tendrils look like tentacles?

3. Uncovered (1): The Madman's Daughter

Good morning! Welcome to Uncovered, a feature that was started over on our adult book review site Nite Lite. For me, a cover can often sway me to pick up a book or avoid it like the plague. I just love seeing new covers and it helps me get excited about a book. So Uncovered is just my way of sharing that cover love with the world. It won't be a regular feature over here, but I will be cross posting when I feature a cover on Nite Lite that falls into the YA/MG/children's category.

Today we are featuring the cover to The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd. This is a historical YA novel coming out in Jan 2013. Even though this one does feature a girl in a dress, it's not your typical YA cover. It definitely has a Gothic feel to it. The girl's dress looks fairly plain but broken up with the bright splash of color on her sash. The water looks still but it's dark and the clouds look ominous. I want to know what she's doing by the water. Is she going to jump in? Is something coming out? Plus, the title is great and makes me want to read it right now

Is anyone else as intrigued by this cover as I am? The Madman's Daughter will be released by Balzer + Bray on Jan 29, 2013.

4. David Foster Wallace Grade School Poem in The Guardian

While exploring the David Foster Wallace archive, Justine Tal Goldberg unearthed a poem most likely written as a grade school assignment.

According to The Guardian, Goldberg was researching for an article when she found a thick folder labeled “very early DFW.” It also contained illustrated short stories, school reading lists and essays on baseball with smiley faces scribbled on the margins.

The article offers these lines from the adolescent Wallace (pictured, via) poem: “My mother works so hard / so hard and for bread. She needs some lard. / She bakes the bread. And makes / the bed. And when she’s / threw she feels she’s dayd.” What do you think? (via Publisher’s Weekly)
